Park ranger gets seven years for fatal shooting

A former ranger at Elephant Butte State Park will spend a year on electronic monitoring for fatally shooting a man who refused to pay his permit fee.

District Attorney Scot Key says that Clyde Woods was sentenced Wednesday in state district court in Truth or Consequences to six years for voluntary manslaughter and given a seventh year for because of a firearm enhancement.

Key says, though, that all but one year was suspended. Woods will spend the remaining year under house arrest with an ankle bracelet and GPS locator.

Woods was charged with shooting Bruce Teschner on the evening of August 23, 2005, at a camp area at Elephant Butte State Park when Teschner refused to pay his camping fee.

No weapons were found on Teschner. Teschner’s family says that he was shot in the back.

>>Um, that's a city?<<

This town was once called Hot Springs, New Mexico but was renamed Truth or Consequences after the game show in 1950. The story is that Ralph Edwards of the game show announced that he would do the program from the first town that renamed itself after the show. Hot Springs took him up.

This is cold blooded murder. How the cop didn’t get charged with 1st degree murder is unbelievable. DA must suck up to cops.

Getting in an argument over a $14 camping fee does not justify pulling a weapon. It’s just a minor citation.

2 shots in the back of the neck? That indicates shooting at close range.

The guy would not have had time to pull a gun and turn around to shoot. The cop couldn’t have put two holes in his neck if he were turning around quickly.

You don’t need witnesses to see bullet holes in the back of the neck. The article makes i sound like there is some sort of uncertainty about where he was shot.

This tree cop is going to pull another one of these a few years down the line.

This is how citizens lose respect for the legal system and cops, whether they are motorcycle cops or park rangers.

The only thing more dangerous than that in my opinion is an idiot judge with a black cloak.

Amen.

It all goes with the attitude of the badge wearers that they exist to control the civilians.

So couldn’t they have gone with “Newlywed Game” or something?

Noticeably absent is the "there's not enough information here" or the "I'll side with law enforcement until somebody tells us otherwise" crowd.

Apparently "Jeopardy" would have been a better choice.

GATT, NAFTA, CAFTA and any trade agreement that they can get is more important than the sovereignty of the US to some people. Why? $imple, fal$e $ecurity.

I hope the Teschner family sees justice done.
If not, I hope Clyde Woods spends the rest of his life looking over his shoulder,
waiting for that round he never gets to hear.

“I’d guess 90% of all gun-toting cops view the people... the citizens... with disgust,”

I agree. They deal with the 0.5% of the scum of the earth and think that the other 99.5% are the same.

“The largest and most popular lake in New Mexico, Elephant Butte Lake State Park provides a setting for every imaginable water sport. The visitor center offers regional interpretive exhibits. The mild climate of the area makes this park a popular year-round destination.

Warmth and Water
Elephant Butte Reservoir, created by a dam constructed in 1916 across the Rio Grande, is 40 miles long with more than 200 miles of shoreline. Although constructed to provide for irrigation and flood control, the lake is New Mexico’s premier water recreation facility. A wide variety of water sports are available at the lake, with fishing being one of the most popular. The mild climate of the area makes this park a popular year-round destination.”

Put me in the crowd that thinks there is something mighty odd about the reporting. How can you have two holes in the back of the neck of someone who is supposed to be threatening you? ANYONE shooting two shots to the neck under stress is either an outstanding shot, or very close and behind the person.

I’ve not much faith in our justice system, but I find it hard to believe any court would rule that way unless there was a LOT more to the story.
