Liberalism in my school
CNN ^

All God's Children (Mark Walton in Manila, Philipines)

Smokey Mountain in Manila, Philipines is a community built on a trash dump where over 25,000 people subsists "among methane fumes scavenging hope and survival from droppings of garbage truck."

For many children living in Smokey Mountain, the way out is death. Yet, for most Filipinos in Manila, artificial contraception is not a choice since 80% are Roman Catholic. For the orthodox, users of contraception are considered sinners "if they know it to be wrong, and understand it to be wrong." Natural birth control through the rhythm method (avoiding sex during period of high fertility is condoned by the Church). The Catholic religion is as influential in Latin America and growing in Africa too.

In Philipines, Marcos provided free family planning and health education, but in '86, Aquino who came to power with the help of the Church, funding for the program stopped and the supply of contraceptives stopped. They consider the problem to be not one of too much population, but that "too few control too much wealth."

At my High School we have to take a class called Environmental Systems. Its a class all about shoving liberal garbage about global warming and such down our throats. I try not to argue so i can just get through the class, but today we had to watch an hour and a half long video about overpopulation. It was called "People Bomb", a 1992 CNN video special with help from the Sierra Club. I knew it wouldn't be good.

It started off talking about how women do not have rights in countries like india. But that soon led to them saying that they didn't have the right to not have kids. Then that they couldn't afford contraceptives. Then how they couldn't afford to have children. And finally to how they needed safe abortions.

It gets worse. The video went on to slam Churches for not allowing follower to have abortions or recieve contraceptives. The video made it sound like Religion was the cause of poverty, starvation and infanticide in these countries.

If you guys have any ideas on how i would be able to combat this, tell me.

Did you write this yourself, or just copy if from a message board?

I will certainly get flamed for this but ... religion, with its emphasis on no contraception/abortion and male privilege to control the wife, does directly have an impact on the number of children born in any family and hence its financial situation.

If the family is on the edge, more children is a cause of poverty and starvation. Heck, we see it in this country - unmarried women with children living off the government.

The cure ? Capitalism - laws, private property ownership, and innovation. Again, this country is the prime example. Where you find infanticide, starvation and poverty you usually find socialism/communism or religious tyrrany.

yes, but promoting contraceptives should not be the way to handle it. We should educate these people and help them improve living conditions through, like you said, Capitalism.

This article looks pretty interesting and it links to several other articles; it also references a book which may be in your local library:

Most Catholics in developed countries do not have large numbers of kids. Religion is not the problem, poverty is.
The unwillingness of people to practice abstinance or wait until marriage in poor countries causes alot of it.

Chinese people don’t really have a religion, yet they are the most populous country in the world. Like i said, poverty

thanks again.

You are quite welcome. I would write to the Population Research Institute as well, maybe they can recommend a movie you can ask the teacher to show "to be fair." I'm sure he wants to be fair!

Chinese people don’t have a religion ? I believe a good portion do, and lots more would if the state would be neutral on the subject. Besides, communism is a religion - to them.

As for the Church - you decide: http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewForeignBureaus.asp?Page=%5CForeignBureaus%5Carchive%5C200512%5CFOR20051227b.html

Especially consider the situation of women - in many of these countries girls/women are owned by their fathers/brothers until marriage, whereupon they become the property of their husbands. Women, in many of these places, do not have choices. If the husband doesn’t want to abstain, she has no choice. It’s why I support voluntary contraception when there is no alternative.

All of this is the reason we should be fighting for the strength of Western civilization and capitalism.

I know what liberalism in school feels like. 12 years of public school in deep blue Maryland and now I have begun four more years of excessive liberalism in college. And people wonder why kids hate school...

Ask the teacher how they plan to handle the "demographic crash" (declining population) in, say, European countries. Since at the current rates Muslims will reach a majority of the population it should prove rather amusing to see how secular liberals plan to handle that situation.

Depopulation doesn't exactly have "happy" results.
