I'm guessing that there may have been a color guard or another American Flag at stage right (house left), where it should be displayed. Hillary!, Obama and the other woman all appear to be glancing in that general direction. As for Richardson, who knows...maybe he's looking towards the singer/band? That's what one is supposed to do if there isn't a flag in sight; however how he could not see the HUGE FLAG SUSPENDED BEHIND HIM is unknown.
