How old is the world?

Most people would say: "Nobody knows."

But the author of the book frequently described as the greatest history book ever written, said the world was created Oct. 23, 4004 B.C. – making it exactly 6,010 today.

In the 1650s, an Anglican bishop named James Ussher published his "Annals of the World," subtitled, "The Origin of Time, and Continued to the Beginning of the Emperor Vespasian's Reign and the Total Destruction and Abolition of the Temple and Commonwealth of the Jews." First published in Latin, it consisted of more than 1,600 pages.

The book, now published in English for the first time, is a favorite of homeschoolers and those who take ancient history seriously. It's the history of the world from the Garden of Eden to the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70.

(Story continues below)

Of course, there will be those who disagree with Ussher's calculations of time – especially evolutionists who need billions of years to explain their theory of

"Hundreds of Billions of years."

It certainly appears that way, but there is good evidence for an old universe and also a young one. Both may be right. We live in a particular reference frame in linear time, and we have no idea what things were like at the time of creation. Dimensionally, we live in 4 dimensions, but there may indeed be 10 or more that are no longer part of this universe. If we are indeed living in 4 of 10 dimension, I suspect that our universe is running on fumes. The laws of physics may be nothing like what Adam and Eve enjoyed. Someday the universe will be repaired. I'm sure to the people living on the earth at that time, it will seem magical.

How old is the world?” Hundreds of Billions of years.

That's not quite accurate. The best scientific data says that the Earth, along with the rest of the Solar System, is about 4 Billion years old.

The Dinosaurs died out about 60 million years ago. Pre-humans didn't appear on the scene until about 2 million years ago, just a short while ago in the history of the planet.

“evidence for an old universe and also a young one.”

Sure but 6,000 years? Come on, I am a Christian, not ignorant.

Hundreds of Billions of years.

More like 4.5 billion.

"which means that instead of a 24 hour day, we will have 16 hour days. God tells us that unless this shortening occurred, then we’d all perish"

A shorter work day would certain help me survive longer!

just that some of that punishment will occur with 16 hour days. I suspect that at the time of the creation of the earth, the earth rotated at that speed. 16 hour days may be what God designed at first.

That right there is funny, I don't care WHO you are!!!

Issac Newton examined Ussher’s work and could find nothing wrong with it

Oh good. Let's take the world of an alchemist as proof Ussher was right.

The fact is that man didn't understand, frankly couldn't comprehend, the age of the universe at the time. To mandate the earth is 6010 years is to put God into a box because we must be right. I don't know how old the earth is (well older than 6010 years). Does it really matter?!? God made it.

Adam was immortal before the Fall. No one knows how long his immortality lasted because there is no concept of time in a state of forever.

In fact the notion of ‘time’ itself is suspect according to our highest level cosmologists, e.g. Hawkings and colleagues at Cambridge.

We're losing dimensions?

Every time I look in the mirror I seem to gain a dimension or two.

God finds a way to shorten our suffering, so that we will indeed go through 7 years of punishment,

Although if Hillary is elected, it may be more like 8years.

But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

This is hyperbole. It was never meant as a conversion formula.

Just hope the Earth doesn’t stay out too late to celebrate - I’d hate to see when Earth gets grumpy the next day.

Psalm 90:4
For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

No, I didn’t say that the universe is 6,000 years old, it is obviously older, but, I am saying that time may not be what it once was. It may not flow the way it once did. The Bible talks about the Heavens (space) being stretched out like a tent, at the creation. Then, God rested from His work. After the fall, I imagine the universe has been steadily collapsing which would alter the velocity of light by altering the permittivity and Permeability of free space constants. (which may not be constant at all) If this is the case, since we reckon time by using the vibration of cesium atoms, by measuring the speed of light, we may be ensnared in flawed reasoning. Trapped in a frame we can’t imagine our way out of. The earth may have existed before creation in an accelerated time frame, in order to age it for our benefit. And once aged, perhaps pushed into normal space. After all, the Bible teaches that God holds the universe in His right hand. if the universe started out as a dimensionless singularity, which I suspect it did, Jesus, in human form, could do this— hold it in His hand.

During the tribulation, while the universe is being repaired, the heavens, or space, are said to “tremble”, and the sky “shakes”. It may be at that point that He re-stretched space out to its original boundry.

"Adam was immortal before the Fall. No one knows how long his immortality lasted because there is no concept of time in a state of forever."

A photon travels at the speed of light. At that speed all distances shrink to zero. Therefore from the photons point-of-view it can go to any part of the universe in an instant.

In fact it just so happens that everything we see as light today is just that one single photon appearing at every place in the universe that God desires it to be.

Talk about efficiency!

I’m sorry but I don’t believe any of it. I believe in scientific evidence, anything else is open to interpretation. The bible can say anything you want it to say, especially when it comes to the creation of the universe.
