Caused by strong high pressure area north of the mountains and a low pressure area south of Los Angeles. The winds are in direct relation to the size of the pressure gap between the high pressure and low pressure areas. The area north of the mountains is the high desert which is normally very dry. If the temperature is high too then the winds generated by the pressure differential is both hot and dry which is the worst of all possible conditions. Passes through the mountains channel the winds to some extent and as a result the winds are higher in the passes and at the top of peaks.
