Now, God banished from Washington Monument

The National Park Service has banished God from a key display of America's Christian heritage in Washington, and a California pastor who regularly leads teams of visitors to see markers of the nation's religious history wants Him restored.

The reference is an engraving of "LAUS DEO," which is Latin for "Praise be to God," and is on the east side of the 100-ounce aluminum cap of the Washington Monument.

Since the actual inscription on the cap, which on the other three sides provides other information, is unviewable atop the 555-foot stone column, the National Park Service has created a replica, which is on display inside the white-colored obelisk of marble, granite and sandstone.

The following photograph shows how the display was seen in 2000, when that inscription could be seen by visitors, even if at an angle:

"LOL! GMTA!! (See #8.)"

Thanks. I see from your post that you're working on a project for my native state (Louisiana). Love your tagline, I've been saying that for quite a while.

I’m surprised someone hasn’t gone to the National Archives and tried to black out the numerous references to God in Declaration of Independence.

“As much as Bush claims to be a Christian, he hasn’t done much to help the cause.”

People here still don’t get it.

Bush is a politician, that is all he is and ever was.

He leveraged claims to be “Christian” and “Conservative” to become president so he could pursue his true passion: Big Government & Mexican migration.

Don’t ever put your faith in a politician, you’ll be dissappointed every time.

Absolutely agree. That's why I'm Conservative, I want less politicians and politicians with less power.

Laus Deo faces the east. The highest point in the District of Columbia is 555 feet above sea level. The height of the monument is 555 feet and the base is a little above sea level. The height of the monument was chosen so that when the sun rises the first thing in DC that its light shines on is the side of the cap that says "Praise God."

That makes sense and is one of those interesting facts that a knowledgeable tour guide would know. The NPS should know that and respect the intentions of the original designer/architect of the building instead of trying to rewrite history.

Dude, that is wisdom for the ages. The day I accepted that concept into my overall worldview it was as if an enormous weight was lifted off of me.

Didn’t some people get all bent out of shape when the Pope/Vatican donated a stone to the construction of the monument?

I'll take Bush's Christianity over Algore or Kerry's anyday. Bush isn't perfect, but to believe he has something to do with a bureaucrat's decision to remove God from a monument is silly. Many bureaucrats make bonehead decisions every day and don't phone the president for permission. I'm sure Bush would have nixed the idea had he known about it. He doesn't know everything, and can't know everything.

This is why our forefathers said we should prefer Christians for our leaders. If the system worked as it did for 150 years, you wouldn't have gotten past dog catcher without an acknowledgment of Christ. When your name came up for a raise, I'm sure a discussion of moral character was included. People today would say that's discrimination. Then, it was common sense. To be able to design a government monument was an honor, I'm sure, given to people with a knowledge of our founders intent.

To listen to the morons today, you would think Washington, Franklin, Adams, and Jefferson wanted Christians shot on sight.

“Bush isn’t perfect, but to believe he has something to do with a bureaucrat’s decision to remove God from a monument is silly”

My comment was more atuned to the “hasn’t done much for the cause” comment. However, to say that he couldn’t affect stuff like this is disingenuous. He can affect it - at least the general attitude that all things Christian must be cleansed from government.

Instead Bush has chosen to grow government and replace government “compassion” with real compassion. His entire premise for becoming president had nothing whatsoever to do with Christianity or Conservatism. He is a big-government politician - as such he embodies the evil that our forefathers warned us about. Washington, Franklin, Adams, Jefferson would all reject just about everything about the Bush presidency.

As a Christian, assuming you are one, you should rue the day that you support any politician (Christian or not) that seeks to grow government, because government is every bit as evil as our forefathers told us it was.

I know there is lots of “what if” with this next statement, but I truly believe that Conservatives would have been better served if Algore or Kerry were elected president, because Republicans would have likely retained Congress and we’d have a divided government that is the best scenario for containing government growth.

I don’t care if our president (or anyone in government) is Christian - I’d prefer they be irrelevant.

“replace government “compassion” with real compassion.”

I meant “Substitute government “compassion” for real compassion”

“.....it was as if an enormous weight was lifted off of me.”

Exactly....if we can be successful in spreading that opinion to more Americans we might have a chance of ACTUALLY lifting the enormous weight of Big Government off of you, and every other citizen.

One must come before the other, though.

“The National Park Service has banished God from a key display of America’s
Christian heritage in Washington...”

I suspect that George would not be pleased, no matter what his personal
concept of “G-d” or “Providence” may have actually been.

Put it on a motorized base so that it rotates.

And if they refuse to do so, tell them to sit on an egg and rotate.

I’ve always that that the belief in God is not the same as believing in a specific religion. God is, and will always be. To acknowledge this is not an endorsement or Christianity, but rather an acknowledgment of reality.
