Conservative author David Horowitz spoke at Columbia University amid tightened security Friday - the latest in a string of political lightning rods to appear at the Ivy League school.
Horowitz's appearance was part of the so-called Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week on college campuses, intended to foster awareness of terrorism. But some Muslims say the week's activities are fostering racism instead.
Horowitz, a self-described former Marxist, said the week was an effort to distinguish ``moderate Muslims'' from ``Islamo-Fascists.''
``This is nothing that could remotely be interpreted as an attack on Muslims. It's a defense of moderate Muslims,'' he told a peaceful lecture-hall audience of about 100 students and visitors.
The California-based activist, known for his ads in campus newspapers opposing slavery reparations, was invited to Columbia by the College Republicans, who on Friday kept track of each person entering Lerner Hall against a list of names submitted in advance. The audience included people who disagreed with Horowitz's positions.
Last month, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad caused an uproar when he was invited to speak at Columbia. He faced tough questioning and the university's president introduced him by saying Ahmadinejad exhibited ``all the signs of a petty and cruel dictator.''
Last year, the College Republicans invited the founder of the California-based Minutemen Project, Jim Gilchrist. He was forced off the stage by protesting students. Gilchrist was invited back earlier this year, but the speech was canceled under pressure from student activists.

You're a Columbia University student, Josh, you don't even know what the term "reasonable discourse" really means.

gee, too bad no one knew until it was over.
It's a defense of moderate Muslims
I wonder what form that took.

You don’t toe Joshua’s line, and you have different ideas. That makes you unreasonable.
Pity the left, they make themselves less relevant every time they open their mouths.

But some Muslims say the week's activities are fostering racism instead. It's about a group within a religion, not about race.
David Horowitz, Dennis Prager, Ann Coulter and Rick Santorum, you keep up this great work you are doing.

The event drew a small group of protesters and activists. Joshua Schwartz, a senior majoring in religious studies, called Horowitz ``a demagogue opposed to reasonable discourse.''
These leftist buffoons, are an amazingly brazen bunch of Goebbelists. They refused to allow Gilchrist the opportunity to present his views on campus at Columbia University. They tried to block Horowitz also. And now this putz says that Horowitz is "a demagogue opposed to reasonable discourse."
Evidently poor Joshua is flunking out his chosen major. Bearing false witness is a rather core point when it comes to religion.
Bill and Hillary are disciples of Goebbels. They have practiced what he preached for decades. This kid is following in their netharious footsteps.
Columbia University, you sure turn out some great graduates. If I were running the place I'd be embarrassed to know that this level of idiot was representing my student body in the press. But then you've allowed these folks to run your campus as they saw fit. They bring in the leader of Iran, responsible for killing our troops in Iraq, then shout people intent on protecting this nation from invasion and subtrifuge, as demagogues.
I don't know what Columbia University alums think of all this. Evidently they eat it up. They continue to support you and you continue to support those intent on destroying our nation.
Free Speech? A thing of the past at the ultra-modern Columbia U.

Joshua Schwartz, a senior majoring in religious studies, called Horowitz ``a demagogue opposed to reasonable discourse.'' It is always a pleasure to hear the well-reasoned opinions of Ahmadinejad's jockstrap sniffers.
