Laura Bush accuses Dems of demagoguery on SCHIP

Laura Bush accuses Dems of demagoguery on SCHIP By Aaron Blake October 28, 2007 First Lady Laura Bush said Sunday that she is much more involved in policy than many people think and then went to bat for her husband on children’s health care and foreign policy.

Calling the state children’s health insurance program (SCHIP) “a perfect issue” for Democrats to demagogue on, Bush waded into largely uncharted public territory for her by taking exception to the party that opposes the president.

The first lady appeared genuinely upset about the Democrats’ tactics on the issue.

“It’s really easy to blame people for so-called voting against children,” Bush said in an interview on Fox News Sunday. The first lady went on to say that the bill would cover children who are not poor and added that the program is often used to cover adults.

“The president is very anxious to work with Congress and to come up with something that both he and they can be proud of,” she said.

Bush also insisted the perception of her staying out of her husband’s policies is false.

“The fact is I’ve been involved for a long time in policy, and I think I just didn’t get a lot of coverage on it,” Bush said. “I was stereotyped as being a certain way because I was a librarian and a teacher…which are considered traditional women’s careers.”

Maybe some repubs with spines can stand up so the first lady doesn’t have to.

Hillary isn’t the only woman who cares about children.

Tell your husband to stand up to the Rats' lies and tell the truth about SCHIP, instead of "working" with them and bending over for them all the time.

Nice to know now. We never voted for you.

We didn't vote for any cabinet members that have a role in policy either. Didn't know who they might be before the election, but we did know who the presidents wife was. Anyone who thinks any First Lady keeps her mouth entirely shut about her husbands career doesn't understand marital relations.

Seh seems to have the spine so lacking in Republicans, perhaps we should have voted for her for something.

Doesn’t matter if they were elected or not.

We elected a President who would place people in these positions that reflect our own beliefs.

Isn't it a bit naive to think Laura Bush sits in the White House kitchen baking cookies like Hillary did? :)

As for one being married for as long as the Bush's, I can tell you, I value my wife's opinion simply because she will give me the unvarnished truth about anything.

That in itself doesn't mean she makes the final decision.

Get real. If you really think that, you are naive.

The President doesn't place people in position based on what the people believe, he places people in position that will achieve his objectives and goals.

People are fickle and lemmings, if any President bent to the will of the people every time an issue came up, we would be a parliamentary system and a democracy rather than a Republic in other words mob rule would prevail

And we elected a President with a wife. At least we knew who she was before hand. Intelligent people take a spouse into consideration before voting.

All wives have a great deal of input on decisions their husbands make. That’s what makes good marriages. If we want presidents with good marriages, then we get influential wives. That’s not the issue. Input is one thing and that’s all she indicates she has given. Control, like what Hillary exericised, is another. It was an indication of an unhealthy marriage. My husband always asks my advise about things going on in his job. And he listens. I have input. But he always makes the final decision. Always.

Glad to see this. I wonder if the MSM will fawn all over the First Lady for speaking out. (sarc!)

Laura was GREAT on FNS! She was talking mostly about her visit to the Middle East promoting early detection of breast cancer. She did make it clear that eight states right now have more adults being covered by SCHIP than children and that the Dems want to expand the program to cover older and higher income children rather than make sure that all of the low income children that are eligible according to the current rules are covered. She in NO way insinuated that when GW was elected that we were getting “two for the price of one” as Hillary did during the 1992 campaign. It was obvious that the influence she has on him is due the normal husband-wife dynamic of using the spouse as a sounding board for the discussion of ideas and problems.

Don’t kid yourself. A President’s wife is always a sounding board for him. And if he considers her wise, he’ll listen to her. That doesn’t mean he takes orders from her, or even does what she thinks is the right thing to do, but it’s important for him to have someone who loves him, and wants him to succeed, giving him opinions, not just someone who is paid to do so,
