In an effort to achieve Republican unity, top Illinois GOP leaders Tuesday endorsed the candidacy of political newcomer Steve Sauerberg as the party's nominee to challenge incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin next year.
Sauerberg, a family physician from Western Springs, was backed by Illinois GOP Chairman Andy McKenna and Randy Pollard, who heads the Illinois Republican County Chairmen's Association.
"A unified Republican Party can and will help to return Illinois values to Washington," Sauerberg said in a statement that also labeled Durbin as an "ultra liberal."

Dr. Sauerberg is a respected physician and medical school director who appears to have always conducted himself with dignity and professionalism. Durbin is best-known for comparing American guards at Guantanimo Bay to Nazis.
He is a RINO and an Andy Mckenna soldier. He is a plant to get Durbin in again, just the way Andy McKenna likes it.
It’s great to be a Rep in Illinois
Well compared to Durbin I’d be absolutely delighted to see even a RINO take that seat. But then I have low expectations for Illinois.
True, very true. But who knows? Maybe Turban Durbin will do a misstep just before the election.
Even his fellow RINO Andy Martin has Sauerberg figured out, noting " Sauerberg supports abortion, but wont say when and how. And he's a doctor? Wouldn't a career doctor, at least, have SOME definite ideas on abortion? Not Slippery Steve. He won't say. Yesterday he came back with a 'second coming,' and indicated he still had no idea where he stood on issues. He supports an assault weapons ban? What kind? Sauerberg couldn't say. After three months S'berg was still a blank canvas on the Second Amendment. And he's running in a Republican primary?"
Sauerberg's entire campaign has consisted of pointing out what an awful Senator Durbin is. In a GOP primary, he's preaching to the choir on that one. The question is why we should nominate HIM over other, more qualified, more conserative Republicans. Sauerberg hasn't made that case at all.
This guy came out of nowhere and definitely looks like he was recruited by the powers that be in the Illinois GOP. He's an political novice but somehow he's locked up the endorsement of every prominent RINO in the state before he's even gotten onto the primary ballot. They are really working hard to sell this guy to GOP primary voters. Evidentially the fools at the state party didn't learn their lesson after that trashing "electable" Judy Baar Topinka took. Now they want to run an obscure physician against one of the most powerful Dems in the Washington? Good luck.
There are two candidates I know of in this Senate race who are actual conservatives. Both are personal friends of mine. One is Mike Psak, an MBA educated trucker who has been active in GOP politics for years. The other is Norm Hill, a Mississippi born professional insurance salesman and retired 23 year decorated Army vet who served in both Korea and Vietnam, former aide to Haley Barbour, and GOP precinct captain in Lake County, Illinois. Both are unapologetic conservatives and passionately believe in our values.
So while I can't tell you who I'm for, I can definitely say which candidate I'm against: Steve Sauerberg.
Unfortunately Illinois values currently are 'ultra liberal'. Durbin will probably win going away.
Obviously the GOP is uninterested in running a serious candidate against one of the most despicable rodents in Washington today.
Why are most Republican doctors who run for office such zeros?(except for Coburn, but he’s only one senator)
The winner of that primary will be Mike Psak, a Chicago conservative who has been campaigning for about 18 months. He’s a truck driver, and he’s met hundreds of people, in many states, who hate Sen. Durbin and gave him donations.
Psak supports President Bush’s Iraq policies. He’s pro-tax cuts, pro-spending cuts, anti-illegal alien, pro-gun rights, pro-life, and anti-gay marriage. He’s the only conservative in the race. If you know anyone who lives in Illinois, please tell them about his website, www.psak4ussenate.com.
Mr. Psak is going to need a lot of luck. I doubt the “Combine” is going to do jack squat to lift a finger for him. It’s disgusting.
I agree that the IL GOP leaders won’t help Mr. Psak. They’ll help Sauerberg who is pro-choice and fiscally liberal. I heard that he was asked for his opinions about anchor babies, and he didn’t have an opinion.
The IL GOP is nothing but an arm of the IL Democrats. It’s time for a divorce.
