A Message to the University of Delaware Community (U Delaware Prez Folds!)
U Daily ^ | November 1, 2007 | Patrick Harker

Posted on 11/01/2007 3:43:02 PM PDT by abb

Nov. 1, 2007

The University of Delaware strives for an environment in which all people feel welcome to learn, and which supports intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, free inquiry and respect for the views and values of an increasingly diverse population. The University is committed to the education of students as citizens, scholars and professionals and their preparation to contribute creatively and with integrity to a global society. The purpose of the residence life educational program is to support these commitments.

While I believe that recent press accounts misrepresent the purpose of the residential life program at the University of Delaware, there are questions about its practices that must be addressed and there are reasons for concern that the actual purpose is not being fulfilled. It is not feasible to evaluate these issues without a full and broad-based review.

Upon the recommendation of Vice President for Student Life Michael Gilbert and Director of Residence Life Kathleen Kerr, I have directed that the program be stopped immediately. No further activities under the current framework will be conducted.

Vice President Gilbert will work with the University Faculty Senate and others to determine the proper means by which residence life programs may support the intellectual, cultural and ethical development of our students.

Patrick Harker President

Is this the school that required residence indoctrination programs to “educate” residents that white people are by definition racist, while people of color can’t possibly be racist?

In a word: yes.

Glenn Beck had some good coverage on this today on his program. I expect he might mention it on tv tonight as well.

Yes it is.

The symptoms can be alleviated by this “aspirin” but the base disease at Delaware U. (and much of academia) remain firmly rooted. We MUST root out this insane hate-America liberalism at colleges and universities in America.

How about stopping the preaching to freshman on how to think, speak, and act in regards to political correctness??

Since part of the re-educational program calls ALL whites in the US racists, can we all turn around and sue UofD for defamation of character and slander??

Exactly. The liberals that run the University of Delaware just got a lesson in market forces. I wonder how many alum called the U to say they were withholding all future donations until they ended the indoctrination program?

Harker tried a half-*ss apology letter first, which mostly defended the program. That obviously didn't work, so now he has caved.

No one was fired, however. No one was moved to a different position. No one was reprimanded. So all of the people, including Harker, who gave us this crap in the first place are still there, in the same positions as before.

Who thinks they have undergone an epiphany? No doubt they have learned something from this experience: Next time, a bit more sublty is required.

Alum’s should set up an Alum bill of rights. With financial penalties for type of infraction.
Label all white males on campus racist by default? No donations for 2 years.

If I were a student there I would make it known, in a civil manner of course, that even though such a program had been scrapped an atmosphere of distrust has been created. Such an institution would be getting the same treatment that I give marginally productive contractors in the engineering and construction business (before I give them the boot).

Currently this University has demonstrated exclusionary and arbitrary non-intellectual practices, demonstrated cultural deconstruction with exclusionary features, and distorted the meaning of ‘ethical’ development. Opposition to their approach, dismantling of the approach, and punishment for those who promoted it need to ensue. WHere is the voice of the Alumni, the voice of the Board of Trustees? Are they in a apathetic cultural, historical, traditional vacuum? The writer of this piece may be right that the ‘program’ has been misrepresented. It may be more deeply off-track than has come to surface already, and a total review of this nightmare place should be reviewed by an outside panel chosen by ME!! I welcome any other volunteers that would probably do a better job however. Freepers are in great supply and talented.

...there are questions about its practices that must be addressed and there are reasons for concern that the actual purpose is not being fulfilled.

In short, the criticisms were well-founded. A look at the "manual" will verify which ones.

To those unacquainted with the bizarro worlds of Critical Theory and postmodern splinters of sociology such as Whiteness Studies this stuff is horrifying on the face of it. Martin Luther King Jr dreamt of a world in which a person's worth was judged not by the color of his skin but by the content of his character. The proponents of these programs judge a person first by the color of his skin and for the extremists that is a stain that may never fully be expunged. It is ironic that the ones who believe most strongly in institutional racism are the ones who most strongly practice it.

Yes, the colleges and universities are the breeding grounds for libtards and the Hate America crowd, but there is a solution, and the institutions of higher learning have facilitated the application of that solution.

While all of the departments on a modern university campus are suspect (I have actually seen with my own eyes a PC chemistry textbook), some departments are worse than others. Sociology departments are the vangard of all that is evil on college and university campi. They must go first.

But the various departments within institutions of "higher" learning are usually highly segregated. Department heads, departmental offices, and the individual offices of professors attached to that department are usually located in a single building. Most of that departments classes will normally be in that same building.

Which brings us to the solution: smart bombs!

First we take out the sociology department and then, any department that has the word "studies" right before the word "department." After that, most of the other departments will fall into line. Then we re-evaluate after six months or so.

If done on a Monday morning, this solution will also have the side benefit of ridding the campus of most of the its ugly women.

I emailed them my objections and shock.

Now we must email and ask about the “broad based review” which is usually a way of burying stuff at a university.

so we have to follow up and ask and ask again “so where is the review”

It will end

Every part of this author's construct of racism, bigotry, prejudice, etc. is based on this now-familiar definition:

Racism is race prejudice plus power.

These six words are the very root of the myriad of false assumptions by this author and the left in general. Within this "manual" the idea of "reverse racism" is poo-pooed because any person that is "white" is presumed to have power, "white privilege" as the author denotes. This means that Oprah Winfrey is, technically, unable to be racist towards a minimum-wage earner because she only fits one of the criterias (power) while she is exempt from the other (racism as defined by the necessary existence of "white privilege")

My son took his required “diversity” class at Temple University this past semester. He carefully analyzed the choices for fullfilling his “diversity class” requirement, and opted for a “diversity” class on Native Americans, figuring that that would be the least unpalatable among the choices offered.

The professor was black (naturally - - these mandatory “diversity” classes are designed to provide employment opportunities to people who majored in “African American Studies”) and one of the books required for the class was written by that famous “Native American”, Ward Churchill.

I kid you not.

Yes, that document was one of the vilesty steaming piles I've come across in a long time.

This means that Oprah Winfrey is, technically, unable to be racist ...

Yep; Oprah has me beat.

She can be predjudiced and she can be bigoted; but she can't be racist.

OTOH, by definition I'm racist; and I can also be either or both of the other two.

I wouldn't have believed it myself if I hadn't seen it. About a third of the book was stuff about pollution, global warming, other PC stuff. Not all in one place, it was scattered throughout the book. About a third of each test was based on the garbage as well.

It was an introductory level college chemistry course for non-science majors. A friend of mine was helping a young man he knows with the course. My friend showed me the book and some of the tests.

Nauseating stuff.

It would be really nice if everyone *was* actually made welcome there on campus. My mother’s previous manager was taking some classes there to finish up a degree a couple of years ago. She is a white woman in her 50s, and she said at graduation she was so uncomfortable because the main speech was about what ‘*they* are doing to us and don’t let *them* stand in your way’, accompanied by cheers and whooping and hollering the whole time.

‘They’ of course, referring to white people.
