Pelosi says efforts to end war won't stop
Winston-Salem Journal ^ | November 3, 2007 | ap

She says efforts will be similar, makes no assurance of success

RALEIGH

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, approaching the first anniversary of an election that lifted her party into power based largely on its opposition to the war in Iraq, said yesterday that Democrats will renew efforts to end the conflict with “a repetition of the same.”

Speaking at Meredith College, Pelosi said that Democrats in the House will file a new proposal next week that would withdraw combat troops by the end of 2008. It would restrict war funding after that date to pay only for embassy protection, targeted counterterrorism efforts and the limited training of Iraqi forces.

But Pelosi conceded later that the effort would mimic unsuccessful attempts of the past year to reduce America’s involvement in the war, and she gave no indication that she thinks that the new attempt will succeed.

“You won’t see a lot that is new,” Pelosi said. “It’s just a repetition of the same.”

Pelosi said that while she has been disappointed by Congress’ failed attempts to end the war, she would not support an effort to withhold all war financing. Some money is needed to provide for U.S. troops overseas, she said.

“We’ll still persist in trying to force a new direction,” Pelosi said.

Pelosi said that Democrats hope to get the proposal to President Bush’s desk before Thanksgiving. Bush has consistently rebuffed such efforts, and even if the proposal were to pass both the House and Senate, it’s unlikely that Democrats would have enough votes to override a sure veto.

Democrats took control of both chambers of Congress last November in an election seen largely as a referendum on the White House’s war policy.

Yesterday, the audience at the all-women’s school in Raleigh questioned why Pelosi hadn’t done more to end the war and hadn’t made an effort to impeach Bush for his handling of the conflict.

And while she responded by citing the costs - in money, lives and Middle East instability - she only assured the audience of continued efforts to oppose Bush. Later, Pelosi seemed to suggest that congressional Democrats do not have the power to change the war’s direction until the next president takes office after the 2008 election.

“This is what elections are about,” Pelosi said. “We didn’t go in having the signature or veto pen that he has. We hoped he would listen to representatives and the thinking of the American people. He refuses to (do that).”

Along with calling voters to the polls, Pelosi also implored the female students to take up leadership roles, talking with them in a private meeting about running for elected office. Pelosi became the highest-ranked elected female in U.S. history because of last year’s election.

“There’s real need for women to be more involved in everything,” she told the overflow audience of about 1,000. “Nothing is more wholesome than the increased participation and leadership of women who make a difference.”

THey don’t learn, do they. They do the same things over and over again (i.e. bring up surrender bills) and expect different results. So the cut and run legislation failed, the bill to piss of Turkey died, what’s next Nan?

All of this would have been over with in Iraq if these traitors had kept their mouths shut the last four years.

...the GOP will be able to look the electorate in the eye and ask: “You really want this gang of fools to stay in charge?”

Where have you been the last decade?

The GOP is too stooopid and spineless to do this.

Since when have they ever been about "ending" the war? All they are trying to do is withdraw our military presence from Iraq. Which war would this "end"?

Why do we let them abuse the language this way?

So is she still calling the surge a failure... Republicans REMIND Americans that is Pelosi and crew had their way the troops would have long ago been pulled from Iraq.. It would have become a hodge podge of terrorist training camps and tens of 1000’s of American on this soil would be dead today if the Democrats had their way.

The war will stop when an EFFECTUAL method is put into play.

We already know what is the most effective way to end a war: Kick the bloody snot out of the other side, until they BEG for mercy. Short of that, the war could drag on for years, as the “playing fields” are somehow “equalized”.

There is no room for equality of the two sides in warfare. If military superiority for one side or the other exists, the morally right thing to do is to exert that superiority with sufficient vigor to thoroughly subdue the opposition, THEN declare terms for peace, well, DICTATE the terms. The alternative is perpetual warfare, because one side or the other still thinks it can gain the advantage. Any truce is only opportunity for one side or the other to reload its arsenal, or to try to gain advantage by stealth that which they could not gain by confrontation.

To: mdittmar; All
You guys just don't understand. Visit any of the moonbat websites, DU, dK, or OpEdNews, and you will see that Nancy is trying to preserve her job. I spent two days abusing the truly insane Liberals at OpEdNew.com. The funniest thing is I was defending Nancy Pelosi for forcing Pete Stark to apologize for his statement from the well of the House.

These guys are insane. I mean it, seriously demented, completely unwrapped, twice around the bend. No one here would ever doubt Nancy Pelosi's Liberal bona fides, right? Well at those sites, they are calling her a "Democon." They hate her and declaim her for going over to the other side...all of this because she was obeying the Rules of Conduct of the House of Representatives.

I spent two interminable days commenting on a post by Cindy Sheehan...yes that Cindy Sheehan, who was attacking Nancy Pelosi for forcing Pete Stark to apologize. It was the most bizarre two days I have ever spent. The hatred they expressed over there toward us, the DNC, and Nancy Pelosi is boundless.

I visited today and they are calling DiFi and Schumer both Conservative moderates because they have chosen to support Mukasey for AG.

So I beg you for Nancy's sake, have a little understanding. It is rare that one sees an archetypical Liberal, an Icon of Liberalism, being attacked as being too Conservative.

So she is now in survival mode. Show her a little compassion...you know she is sooo deserving of our compassion. Such a loyal American, so supportive of our troops...I can go on lying like this for ever you know...

Really, it you want to see what it is like in that alternate universe, OpEdNews is the window into their bizarro world. DU and dKos are not even contenders. I saw quotes from Henry Wallace and yes believe it or not I saw a quotation from Jeff Rense.

I doubt very seriously that Michael Rivero's whatreallyhappened.com is any more seriously demented that OpEdNews. The hatred for all things in which we as Conservatives believe is palpable.

It it wasn't so tragic to see such thinking, it would be hilarious.

Disclaimer: I will not be held responsible for brain damage occurring to any visitor not wearing a proper tin-hat .
