October 2007 may turn out to be the month that immigration became a key issue in presidential politics. It hasn't been, at least in my lifetime.
The Immigration Act of 1965, which turned out to open up America to mass immigration after four decades of restrictive laws, wasn't one of the Great Society issues Lyndon Johnson emphasized in 1964. The Immigration Act of 1986, which legalized millions of illegal immigrants but whose border and workplace provisions have never been effectively enforced, was a bipartisan measure unmentioned in the debates between Ronald Reagan and Walter Mondale.
There was no perceptible difference on immigration between George W. Bush and Al Gore in 2000. Both favored a comprehensive bill with legalization and guest-worker provisions. John Kerry in 2006 and 2007 voted for immigration bills along the lines supported by Bush.
Now, things look different. In the Democratic debate on Oct. 30, Tim Russert demanded to know whether Hillary Clinton supported New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's policy of issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. The forthright answer: yes and no. A clarifying statement by the Clinton campaign later in the week did not much clarify things: a hedged yes. It was one of several issues on which Clinton seemed to take calculating and ambiguous non-positions. But it is one that may have major reverberations in the presidential campaign -- and in congressional races, as well.
The reason is that the Democrats -- and Bush -- are out of line with public opinion on the issue. That became clear as the Senate debated a comprehensive immigration bill in May and June.(continued)

Barone is a bright man, but he has been wrong and clueless about just how explosive an issue this is (like so many of the inside-the-beltway types). A decade ago, it wasn’t in my top 5 of most important issues. Today, it IS the entire top 5... especially after they moved in next door to me in July. No peace ever since.
LETS MAKE THIS THE ISSUE!!!!!
?? Just curious. What do you mean by this because someone in my neighborhood retired, but decided to lease their home instead of selling. Now, it's illegalville!
Welcome aboard, illegal immigration has been my #1 issue for two decades, it has been my whole top 5 for a decade.
To think that y'all would want to keep illegal migrants out of our country, sent here by the Mexican government, drug cartels, communist Roman Catholic priests, and lovey dovy Protestants, and their agents here ( the religious net for immigrant aid who think they are a mmodern underground railroad), and the upper classes who want servants, all who have the BEST intentions for the transformation of the USA into a destabilized, fun, anarchists dream. Shame on you!
The World is a Village and we must allow the unwashed masses to inundate our shores!
Hablamos Espanol , los todos?
Better bone up on our new lingua franca today.
( SARC.)
I’ll vote for almost anyone who the GOP nominates, even if I have to hold my nose.
But I’ll campaign for and support with my sweat and money a candidate who makes this a top issue. And REALLY means it.
Michael Barone is way too calm about the issue. This is some of what's bothering us:
5 of 6 Men Arrested In 'Zip Tie' Case Indicted - PHOENIX

Thomas said four of the five men are being held without bond under Proposition 100 because of they are accused of being in the U.S. illegally. Some of them may have been previously deported, Thomas said.

We've got ghetto-builders. A bunch of illegals will either rent or buy in a nice neighborhood, pack it with 20 people...park junk cars in front of it...leave beer bottles and cigarette butts everywhere (apparently trash cans are a foreign concept)...and the housing values start to plummet. And of course, the neighborhood gets some real culture with the pimped out mid-90s Hondas with tinted windows that blast loud music from the 'home country' in the middle of the night.
For apartments and condos, it is even worse. You'll find 3+ families living in a 1-bedroom 1-bath.
They're living better than they ever did in the Third World sh#thole from where they came...but they're destroying the property values of neighbors who are here legally and refuse to live like animals.
What's interesting is the dynamic between these illegals and African Americans. The first neighborhoods they tend to destroy are the middle-class neighborhoods that are predominantly African American. Doesn't do much for racial/ethnic harmony...particularly when the few jobs remain in the neighborhood are taken by illegals and displacing the locals.
...”Ill campaign for and support with my sweat and money a candidate who makes this a top issue. And REALLY means it.”
Tancredo aside, the only candidate who has consistently walked the talk on this issue for many, many years has been Duncan Hunter. I hope that Hunter can count on your support in spite of the MSM being intent on choosing our nominee for us. And, related to illegal immigration, Hunter is the only candidate who has promised to have the border effectively secured in 6 months. As well, he has promised an immediate pardon for Ramos and Compean and is fighting the battle to prevent the CFR/OBL’s agenda for the NAFTA Superhighway towards a North American Union.
I don’t know where you live, but believe it or not the same thing is happening here, in OHIO!!!
I live in an apartment complex in a very nice Columbus suburb. Over the past few months, the parking lot has become full of autos you’ve described, untold numbers of people in a 2 bedroom apartment, none speak English, predominately ages 18 - 30.
New roofs are being installed throughout the complex. There are between 15-25 on the roofing crew and every single one of them is Hispanic, none spoke English. Not a single one is African American, Caucasion, etc. Same scenario with the landscaping company. (I tried to ask about the safety for my dog of the lawn chemicals, “no speak English”.) Every restaurant I’ve visited, from fast food, like McDonalds, to the better steakhouses, have illegals. Most use caucasion Americans as ‘front’ people...wait staff, hostess, cashiers...but bussers and the rest of the kitchen staff are Hispanic and speak little English. Churches advertise services for Hispanics. Newspaper ads for some apartments advertise in Spanish.
And you’re right, they are destroying every place they go. No matter what their current situation, it is better than where they came from, but the ‘culture’ seems to be one of entitlement, lending itself to irresponsibility, contempt, blatant disregard for our laws and void of assimilation.
I can only assume that if this is happening in Columbus Ohio, it is happening all across the country.
Indeed. My road to Damascus was about 25 years ago. I regularly played tennis with a hippie liberal (oh, he was a nice enough guy to play tennis with even if more than a wee bit deluded) and he did a lot of work with "disadvantaged" youths.
One day he sighed, I asked what was wrong and he said we'd soon have no country left unless we elected a fascist (his exact word, shall I say his uttering it "seared" it in my mind?) president that would put up a wall to keep out the criminals that were flooding the country and eject the ones already here.
Shocking words but especially from him. I started looking around and by gum this hippie commie was right.
I'm hoping we've finally reached critical mass and it's not too late.
That is precisely what we are seeing in south Georgia, in my small southern city.

The issue will be ignored if Hillary and Rudy are the nominees because they have the same views
Mexico and Guatemala are exporting their racial and poverty problems. Look at the illegals- they are dark-skinned, ethnically tribal, and back-country third world poor. Now, look at Vicente Fox.
You can be sure that it is. Especially here out west. Where I'm at, you don't get hired or elected if you are non-Hispanic. Business doesn't come in unless it can get past the crooked and cronied Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (yes... it's actually called that). The result, so far, is that the town I live in is a leftist, unattractive, dangerous, no-opportunity hellhole, full of crime, fraud and despair.
My sentiments exactly.
The people pushing Rudy as the nominee of the GOP must benefit from illegal labor and probably live in gated communities.
Illegal aliens are fine with them as long as their neighborhoods and estates are free of any chance of becoming a barrio.
Either that or the same thing is occurring all over the United States.
Not only is illegal immigration from Mexico the most serious issue of the Presidential election, it is probably the most traumatic foreign imposition in US history,
There has to be far more than "12 million," more like forty million.
Also any national politician who addresses the illegal question, without invoking Mexico's status, politics, and agenda, is sidestepping the problem.
The taxpayer can be expected to face up to the burden of Iraq, but not Mexico?
Thus we have the Council on Foreign Relations, patrician agenda ridden jerks.
What it means is:
The schools, public and private, have to slow down teaching because they have to teach
English to the illegals. At all grade levels because many kids come into this country well after 1st grade.
It means you have to stock up on paint to paint over all the graffiti and you must not confront a vandal for fear of retribution to you or your family.
You will get sick often after eating out. The news had an article last Friday where 212 mostly Hispanic workers at a chicken plant tested positive for TB.
Their families are so large that there is a party every other weekend and you have to put up with accordion music until 2 in the morning.
You may have to pay a referral fee for your next job of a couple thousand dollars if you are in the construction business.
If you own a small store you will have to pay for protection to the people that will rob or vandalize you.
It means while driving a car you look straight ahead and dont make eye contact with the people in the car beside you.
It means you can no longer park in front of your house because your neighbors have taken over.
It means the mail lady will not deliver your mail because your neighbors park in front of your mailbox.
It means you have to shred or burn your mail because they pick through your trash.
It means you have to be much more cautious when driving because they can turn in any direction from any lane and they dont know what a stop sign is.
It means that if you take a bus the only thing missing from the third world are chickens.
It means that after a car accident they other driver will flee.
It means that your car get hit while parked in front of your house.
It means your wife cant walk alone for fear of being followed because they think she is a prostitute.
Hillary and Rudy have been selected for us.
That's the way it works. It's called an Oligarchy.
Here's a piece of evidence: GWB says now that Hillary is a legitimate candidate for President. Awhile back he rigorously defends Dick Cheney as VP because he has the experienced background, SecDefense, corporate executive, congressman, to be the chief executive. Hillary has virtually NO qualifications, whatsoever. Yet GWB defends her as a viable candidate.
And there's no conspiratorial NY-DC axis?
The American taxpayer is being played for the fools that we are, vis-a-vis illegal immigration.
wow. you sound PISSED OFF. (and, you have every right to be!!)
cheer up! this is divvvvvvvvvversity at work after all. compaaaaaaaasion, for the peeeeeeeople donchya know! /sarc
The Dallas Morning News and local TV news outlets have been playing up the "conflicts" ever since we voted for restrictions on renting to illegals by a 70% majority. Now I guess we are seeing Payback.
However, yes, there are others who are going to be mightily angry having been weaned off the teat of the Ameican Taxpayer they got used to, and I swear, they will go a robbin', a rapin', a shootin' and a stealin' all the way back to the border on their way out--there will be quite a toll of crime and destruction in their wake. Mark my word. Payback is indeed coming.
What’s going on with Georgia’s new anti-illegal laws? Hopefully their time is limited.
Los Angeles Times Today
The number of immigrants deported has risen to more than 261,000 in fiscal 2007, up from about 177,000 two years ago. The 2007 fiscal year ended Sept. 30.

Eight of them were even registered to vote in American elections.

Under federal "motor voter" law, anyone receiving a driver's license automatically may register to vote.
Nothing but the "honesty" of illegal aliens prevents them from breaking one more law, and voting in American elections.
Yet Hillary Clinton thinks we should give driver's licenses to illegal aliens.
I wonder why? /Sarcasm.
It's hard to know who, or what, to believe.
The headlines are contradictory-- you'll read one claiming a great exodus ( and much hardship ) then another claiming Dalton is the new Little Mexico.
Locally, I see more "folks who kinda look like illegal aliens" than ever-- probably because the Chiefs of both the City & County Police Forces have openly declared that they won't enforce immigration laws...
Ain’t that the truth! You nailed it!
The former neighbors had been leasing their house initially to two black families (the latter one included the female head of household having a serious drug problem who attempted suicide — but these neighbors were QUIET). When the Black lady couldn’t afford the asking price of the house, she moved out and in came the illegals that were working for the boyfriend of the owner. They’ve been violating multiple city codes ever since they moved in, and the worst has been the almost daily audiological rape we’ve endured with nowhere to escape it. We’ve called the cops umpteen times from almost day #1. We may likely proceed with a lawsuit against the neighbors (the owner, who has moved to a more “respectable” neighborhood, and the illegals themselves) for harrassment.
ping
They are dark-skinned and tribal because they are the Aborigine class, Indians is a better description.
Vicente Fox is of European extraction/lineage, transplant, for a better description. I have yet to see an illegal Mexican of European lineage, only the Aborigine.
Correct to the max! Why don’t our media criticize the racist nature of the Mexican government? Millions of Indians live a subsistence life while the elites drink Premier Cru.
One thing I can add however, is that until the past five years or so it seems, there weren't many illegals on my side of town. But now, just last weekend, my wife and I were at the cornor gas station and as I was pumping the gas, five or so mexicans pulled up on the other side of the pump I was at. The fast spoken mexican chattering, along with the loud burrito music (and dented/beatup sides of their van) was the tipoff they were illegals. Here's what happened next.
Upon pulling up, I had just barely glanced at them and one of them, after getting out of their junker, looked at me, started walking right to me, then, at the last second, turned away and headed back to the beatup van laughing out loud and rolling his shoulders like he had just won a boxing match. (what was that about??)
It doesn't end there. No, unfortunately not.
After I had walked into the store to pay for my gas and get my wife a cold drink (with lots of ice, as usual), I came out and as I'm walking towards my car, there are two of these guys, standing fairly close to the front of my car. Their backs are to me, and I when I look a head of them into my car, my wife is looking straight down as if reading a book (there was no book in the car or magazines).
Finally, I get parallel with these two guys and they are peering into my car looking at my wife with big smiles on their faces. And what do you think they are doing? - - - - - - They are doing the Rosey baseball game singin' routine while grabbing at their crotch!!
Let me ask now, how would this make your wife, daughter feel???
Bottom line - and I hate to sound unstable here, but as of that trip to the gas station nine days ago, I now carry with me, everywhere I (we) go in our vehicles, my lawfully allowed .38 snub nose (since I have my conceal permit). I never have bothered to carry it as it's a hassle to tote it around; I'd usually only drive with it if I or I and my family are going to visit relatives a couple hours away.
It's as if everyday now, we here in America are at the Alamo.
Anyone have anything like this happen to you? Having your wife flat out totally embarrassed and you yourself being intimidated for no reason at all, at close range in your own neighborhood - by illegal tacos?
Have to pardon my reference to these illegals as walking burritoes/tacos, but I’ve now had enough!
Posted mine before I read your post. Reading it now.
Yeah, when you reach that point, that’s really bad. You shouldn’t have to feel so unsafe that you have to carry a gun. What you should’ve done was talked to the owner of the gas station and told him what happened, gotten their license plate number, and contacted the police to tell them what happened. At the very least, they have a complaint filed for harrassment. If it’s a routine occurrance there, you might tell the station owner that you might have to do your business elsewhere because you don’t feel safe coming by either alone or with your family.
What’s outrageous about so many DC talking heads is they are so far removed from the problem. They don’t live in neighborhoods that have been overrun, most of them either live in upscale or gated communities (I doubt many of them associate with Black folks, either — I know when my neighborhood went from overwhelmingly White to mixed-race, there was some worries — but now, with Blacks being displaced by illegals, I never thought I’d dread the day my former inner-city neighbors would leave. The last of the native-born Americans).
Here in Nashville, there are entire sections of town you cannot feel safe being in or going with your family because of the invasion that weren’t previously. These were areas that until the early ‘90s were working class White. Illegals milling about, loitering in front of stores, casually strolling through 5-lane highways. It’s gone far beyond out of hand. 20 years ago, you’d be hard-pressed to find ANY Hispanics (let alone illegals) in Nashville.
I can’t even begin to imagine what shamnesty would do to this country, you’d have an entire criminal element immediately legitimized, and it would invite even more folks to just walk in, not just from Mexico, but from Central and South America. We could easily have 100,000,000 invaders within another decade. We’re almost halfway there now. It is criminal ignorance that this President doesn’t understand this isn’t Midland, Texas in the ‘50s where he had a handful of Mexican friends coming here to work hard and whatever, this IS Reconquista, ironically in areas that never had any Mexican presence, quickly transforming entire areas of towns and cities into 3rd world hellholes.
Back in the early ‘90s, I visited a few border towns, and now my section of Nashville where many business are located look EXACTLY the same. This is not progress, this is a fiasco and this has to be stopped, or we will lose this country.
Good point and an uber important one. I saw an another thread with a legitimate link that confirms that up to 8 of the 19 9-11 terrorists were registered to vote. I was shocked because that fact had completely escaped notice by myself and many others.
I am wondering how an organization like say NumbersUSA can attach the illegal vote registration issue to their platform. They and other organizations had a huge role in stopping the Senate CIR insanity. They could play an important role in stopping the illegal vote fraud that WILL OCCUR in 2008 to the benefit of Hillary Clinton and others.
I have the links to SOLID EVIDENCE here in Seattle that the Supervisors in the County Elections Office were and are responsible for vote fraud. ACORN and MoveOn are merely street operatives but the real string pullers are criminal hacks working in government election offices that are overseeing and assuring the fraud outcome.
If the 9-11 terrorists who were registered to vote can be broadcast widely and the implication that millions and millions of illegals are likewise registered to vote, the same elements that clobbered the Senate on immigration can rally support to stop voting by illegals.
The means to expose illegals who have already registered to vote are available but it will take a significant grassroots effort.
One idea is to get a digital spreadsheet of the voter rolls and sort according to address. Any anomalous cluster of registered persons living at the same address would be a starting point to investigate.
There is not enough time to pass laws that would enable verification of legal citizenship, and the democrats controll Congress so even if there were time there is likely not enough political support.
But address clusters are fair game for any private citizen to investigate. ICE could respond to complaints about these clusters and they have the means of ascertaining legal or illegal status.
Yes, exactly. And I wonder what Hillary would do if she and her daughter were at a gas station in Nashville or here, and illegals come to the front of their vehicle and start grabbing at various parts of their bodies?
Tell ‘em she felt their pain and asked for their vote.
thanks, bfl
“The people pushing Rudy as the nominee of the GOP must benefit from illegal labor and probably live in gated communities.
Illegal aliens are fine with them as long as their neighborhoods and estates are free of any chance of becoming a barrio”
Bingo!
“Anyone have anything like this happen to you?”
Yes. 10 years ago, a drunken illegal murdered one of my friends at a pizza parlor. He fled to Mexico.
We are watching a hundred Fallujahs being created across the USA. Who would have thought that Tennessee would become part of the Aztlan invasion?
I hope we find a way to turn back this invasion, before it metastasizes, and we have to use terrible methods to cut it out.
If we can......
I just walked down to get my mail and 2 of those illegals were lurking outside by the trees giving me some strange look. Real nice. Now I don’t even feel comfortable stepping outside my door on an acre property with the criminal element feet away from me.
As citizens, we can do all the investigating we want.....but if the MSM and the Quisling govt are pro-invasion.....
There a a few thousand counties in the USA. If a grassroots effort was launched to obtain digital copies of voters lists which are available for the asking as they are public material, then a address sort can be made to identify anomalous clusters of persons registered.
The idea is that illegals have the characteristic that they cluster at one address; 2-3 families to a small apartment is not uncommon.
A nationwide list of such clusters from voter rolls would help identify some suspected illegal voters. A followup investigation to these clusters would ascertain other attributes that could identify potential illegals. Attributes such as transporting themselves to day labor sites or working for cash at construction sites (for example, you ask a plasterer if he has a business card, see if he speaks English, etc.); such investigations can be used to file complaints as to suspected illegal presence.
The grassroot investigations would be problematic and have a potential for being accused of harassment. But in many cities and towns there are ordinances that regulate density and most of the illegal families are violating those ordinances. Therefore, a list of clusters that clearly show density violations is enough to file a complaint and compel a local DA or police office to followup.
A few such cluster reports every week that are pursued by local officials for density violations and/or grassroot investigations can reverberate through the blogosphere to a point of spilling over into MSM.
But the main point is that all these reports will be connected to voter rolls.
I think it would be highly worthwhile because it would alert the public to the problem of tainted voter rolls and their connection to illegals.
For a glimpse of forensic election investigation genius, see the yeoman’s work by Sharkansky here:
Gee, the Chicago Sun-Crimes editor says that we have it all wrong! Barf alert..
Facts show immigrants don’t deserve crime blame
November 5, 2007
Illegal immigrants get blamed for everything: rape, murder, robbery, you name it.
They are actually quite law-biding, as much as the rest of us, a Sun-Times report reveals.
They account for about 3 percent of the state’s population and an equal percentage of inmates in Cook County jails. Less than 4 percent of adults in Illinois prisons have been identified as illegal immigrants.
The perception holds that more illegal immigrants equals more crime. That view is bolstered by lies told by anti-illegal immigrant groups like the Minutemen. They claim 64,000 U.S. citizens have been killed by illegal immigrants since Sept. 11, 2001. That would mean more than half the murders in the United States have been committed by illegal immigrants.
That’s ludicrous.
Besides, the numbers don’t add up. The FBI doesn’t even track the data of offenders or victims based on their citizenship status. The data does show that nearly half of those arrested for murder or non-negligent manslaughter in 2006 were white. Only 1 percent of “criminal aliens” were in jail for murder in 2005, according to the Government Accountability Office.
Sadly, people tend to believe this anti-immigrant hype. They always have. One recent survey found most Americans believe immigrants boost crime. These same claims have been hurled at the Irish, Italians and Chinese at some point in America’s history. Today we scapegoat Mexicans.
We don’t blame all middle-age white guys for the crimes of John Wayne Gacy. We don’t blame all black men for John Allen Muhammad’s Beltway sniper-fest. We shouldn’t blame all illegal immigrants, either.
