WASHINGTON - Congress sent President George W. Bush its most forceful rebuke Thursday by overriding his veto of a water projects bill that directs billions of dollars toward restoration of the Everglades and recovery programs for Hurricane Katrina.
The Senate voted Thursday to override Bush's veto, 79-14, far more than the two-thirds majority needed to overturn Bush's veto of the $23.2-billion Water Resources Development Act. Among the senators voting for the override were 34 Republicans, including Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla.
The Senate vote followed a resounding 361-54 vote in the House on Wednesday. Together the two votes turned the bill into law, despite Bush's strong objections to the price tag.

Jason Lewis (In for Rush) said the Army Corps asked for $5 billion. The Senate larded that into $12 B, the house $13B. They compromised in the conference committe by adding the two together and added another $billion to come up with $26B.

No it is not. The Corps of Engineers said they needed 5 Billion. The House and Senate added 18 BILLION in pork to it. That is why Bush vetoed it. Think about that for just a minute, a more than 300% markup. How much longer can we afford this? Bush was right to veto this pork laden bill, but politics as usual won the day. What a shame.
Congress is trying to buy its way to a 12% approval rating. Up from the current 11%.
While I don’t agree with the bill, I have no problem with Congress passing a bill over a president’s veto. They are fully empowered to do it under the Constitution. Love that Taft-Hartley Act!! Bush won’t hold any responsibility for this one!!

Duncan Hunter voted in favor of the override. How disappointing.
Passage of this bill doesn’t really mean anything, Bush still has one last veto- his “Border Fence” veto. The money don’t get spent till HE spends it.
Yours is the best explanation for this criminal act. While Congress always demands “full disclosure” from everyone, the pork hidden in this Bill is reason for the override and Congress never fully discloses.
So what happened to George? Does he not feel well?
For at least the first 4 years and more, he and the congresscrooks spent MY/OUR money in obscene amounts. Bush was always too glad to sign off on OUR money and give it away in truckloads all around the world.
As Hillary said: “We are going to take things away from you for the Common Good.”
This already happened almost 7 years ago.
So what else is new other than it appears George is suddenly not feeling well.
