Afghan demonstrators demand death penalty for 'Koran abuse'

JALALABAD, Afghanistan (AFP) - More than 1,000 university students demonstrated in eastern Afghanistan Sunday to demand the death penalty for an official accused of insulting the Koran, police and witnesses said.

The attorney general's spokesman, former journalist Mohammad Ghaws Zalmai, was arrested at the Pakistan border a week ago trying to flee after being accused of misinterpreting the Muslim holy book in a new translation.

"Death to Ghaws Zalmai!" shouted the angry mob in the eastern town of Jalalabad, an AFP reporter in the crowd said. "We want him hanged!"

"He has insulted our religion and must be killed," the group said.

The demonstrators blocked a main road linking the eastern town to the capital, Kabul, for several hours. Dozens of police officers were on hand to prevent violence.

The conservative parliament last week banned Zalmai from leaving the country days after the distribution of about 6,000 copies of his Dari-language translation, called "Koran-i-Pak" or "clean Koran".

A commission of clerics and prosecutors is examining the text, which does not include the original Arab verses and is said to differ on several issues, including homosexuality and adultery.

Zalmai is meanwhile being interrogated and police are searching for a cleric who approved his version, said Abdul Rauf Arab, an official in the attorney general's office.

The Afghan branch of the International Federation of Journalists has said its information was that Zalmai, president of a media union, was accused of not having his version of the holy book certified by an authorised scholar.

Afghanistan is a deeply devout country, with its 10-year resistance of the Soviet invasion called a "holy war", and issues of religion have in the past triggered massive demonstrations.

The constitution is based on Islamic Sharia law, which allows the death penalty in some circumstances.

Just changing the Koran's interpretation triggers a demand to murder a translator.

“Afghanistan is a deeply devout country..”

Egad, here we go again loosely using the word “devout”. Using that interpretation we can safely say that Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot and Mao were devout. Satan is devout.

And let’s not forget about the many “moderate” Muslims.

Insult must be a pretty hard thing to live with. My plan was to do a full edit on the Koran (mostly transcriptions of the ravings of a sun-crazed schizophrenic madman), putting it more in line with the existing religious texts of the Abrahamic monotheistic religions, and reconcile the language and beliefs with the older Zoroastrian religion from which the Muslim was nurtured, before it was torn away from its mother culture.

Born in error and living only by violence, something within Islam must undergo a serious course correction, else it shall be as dead and forgotten a religion as the Sun worshippers of ancient Egypt.

For one thing, the followers of Islam could adopt the Ten Commandments, and for another, include the Golden Rule in their teachings.

As a people, the Muslims lack the humility to properly worship ANY god, as they also lack a deep and abiding respect of their real roots.

...is said to differ on several issues, including homosexuality and adultery.

I'm betting his translation didn't include killing these people in the name of Allah.

“He has insulted the Religion of Peace and must be killed,” the group said, according to another translator.

I think this article illustrates why Islam may never be reformed or modernized, and why adherence to this religion is possibly the biggest roadblock to progress and individual liberty in the world today.

Muslims everywhere are always telling everyone else to shut up.

At the recent Islamofascist Awareness Meeting at San Francisco State University, a scarved Middle Eastern woman told the speakers that they should not be talking about Islam. Her argument was that they were not close enough to the religion to truly understand it. Therefore anything they said would be inappropriate.

This “Yakity-yak, don’t talk back,” approach seems to begin as a self-censorship. I have noticed a number of times that when a Muslim (especially females) can’t answer a point, they say I should speak to a higher-up in the religion.

It is as if they don’t consider their own opinions to be worthy, so they are perfect at not having one - at never having thoughts that challenge whatever their religious superiors allow. It can’t be much of a leap for these Stepford Muslims to then tell every one else to shut up like they’ve agreed to, first through organizaations like CAIR and later with the sword.

I agree. However, Western Civiization is sick. That is why we produce “leaders” like the poor wretch of a mayor that thought carrying guns was too violent for “Remembrance Day.” The West is producing “Obama,” “Hillary” etc. etc. Do you honestly think that the aforementioned non entitites are capable of leading resistance to a religion whose adherents are willing to kill or to die for their faith?
