Discord roils L.A. Unified parent panel
Los Angeles Times ^ | November 10, 2007 | Howard Blume

Posted on 11/11/2007 10:29:38 PM PST by ruination

Acrimony with racial overtones has plagued the advisory council. The key issue: whether meetings in Spanish should be allowed.

For months, parents on a Los Angeles Unified School District advisory council have disagreed over whether their meetings should be conducted in Spanish or English. Such arguments became so abusive that district officials canceled meetings for two months and brought in dispute-resolution specialists and mental-health counselors.

But Friday morning's gathering of the District Advisory Council proved dysfunctional in any language.

By one vote, parents censured their own chairman for alleged bad behavior, leading to a walkout of most Spanish-speakers. The rebuked chairman, Roberto Fonseca, followed them out of the room. Most voting for the censure were African American, adding racial overtones to the back-and-forth hectoring.

Friday's dispute, at the district's downtown Parent Community Services Branch, was the latest in a year of acrimony at the council, which was elected by parents at schools throughout the district. They offer advice on -- and oversight of -- the expenditure of $385 million on federally funded programs for students from poor families.

The goings-on raise another round of questions about parent participation in the nation's second-largest school system, which has been repeatedly criticized by auditors for inconsistent and ineffective parent involvement and outreach. Critics say the district rarely seeks true parental input and instead uses parents to rubber-stamp budgets and programs. District officials insist they are determined to change this perception and are making progress.

Friday's chaos had been building since February, when Fonseca, who is bilingual, started to give his chairman's report in Spanish. Some in the audience objected; arguments and recriminations ensued, and school police rushed over amid concerns that a fistfight would break out, witnesses said.

Doesn’t matter if they do it in English, Spanish, both, or neither.. L.A. Unified can’t be fixed by anyone they have in there now..Public Schools are just sinkholes for public dollars and dropout factories.

Teach them sign language.

I can think of one gesture they’d understand already!

See how easy that was??

Latest despatch from the brown-on-black wars.

So it seems Lations are outnumbering the Blacks in the school district and the blacks (unlike us cringing whiteys) do not feel the need to be polite about it (or anything, for that matter).

And now they’re fighting over scraps of racial swag like two dogs over a bone.

You will have to forgive me if I sound amused. I can’t help it, I’m half Ice Devil. I’ll hold a tearful interview as soon as Larry King will clear some time for me.

Some meetings consist entirely of Spanish-speakers in a district where more than 266,000 students (and probably many more parents) are English-learners out of a student population of about 694,000.

I believe this is what is commonly refered to as assimilation.  Glad to see it's working.  As if...

Friday's dispute, at the district's downtown Parent Community Services Branch, was the latest in a year of acrimony at the council, which was elected by parents at schools throughout the district. They offer advice on -- and oversight of -- the expenditure of $385 million on federally funded programs for students from poor families.

These are federally funded programs on top of the regular cost of schooling these chidlren.  Isn't that special.

Friday's chaos had been building since February, when Fonseca, who is bilingual, started to give his chairman's report in Spanish.

No problem.  This is essentially Mexican soil anyway.

“Some observers have described the battle over language as a stand-in for a larger dispute. Federal Title 1 funding started during the civil rights era largely as a mechanism to help impoverished blacks who occupied vast swaths of South Los Angeles. The federal money has yet to eliminate low-academic achievement among African Americans.

But Latinos now have larger numbers in many formerly black-majority schools. And Latino parents are not content to oversee only those funds set aside for English-learners — these are generally much smaller pots of money than the federal poverty-relief dollars.”

**********************

Sad article on fighting over taxpayer money. Not one mention of students in the whole article.

Take away the money. See how many members quit/walk out then. Take away the money and let the parents focus on improving the education for the students.

Things got so bad in Dallas at one point between the Blacks and Mexicans that they had to bring in a white male to run the district.

I think we can pretty much predict that the LA school system will be the first to completely fail because of parent-teacher relations. By the time that Latinos figure out the racial game...the black majority will turn into a minority....and even the remaining whites will question how anything can function in this “multi’cultural” world.

My guess is that we have three to four years at best...before total failure. Even the Fed’s coming into that region...won’t be able to stop the mess.

Wait a minute, Latinos have figured out the racial game (see L.A. mayor Villaraigosa and CA Assembly Speaker Nunez for prime examples). That phase is over. Next up is how the entire country doesn't descend into the same multicultural cluster****.

You had best learn spanish - bow to your new masters.

And make sure that you embrace homosexuality in all of its forms, keep sending your children to public indoctrination systems, and keep aborting your unborn descendants.
- Thats okay, but you must learn spanish to properly obey your new masters until you are extinct.

Its happening right now. - have fun

The existence of polite & cultured society rests entirely upon one word: “cooperation”.

That means peace exists only because people are willing to do something they’d rather not, just to facilitate the continuation of peace. From school board meetings being conducted in a particular language, to criminals standing quietly while being handcuffed, peace is achieved only because of voluntary participation in the “social contract” (written or unwritten).

Usually, those who choose not to cooperate are enveloped by the system and persuaded to resume cooperation (or are permanently removed from the system). Peace is restored.
Sometimes, those who choose not to cooperate cause a tear in the social contract; if not persuaded to repair the damage and resume cooperation, society quickly breaks down. War returns.

Governance reigns only when people cooperate with a relatively tiny number of rulers and bureaucrats and police.
A few non-cooperators can and will be rapidly arrested and corrected if possible, and marginalized if not.
Enough non-cooperators quickly overwhelm and sideline the government.

California is somewhere around the world’s 6th largest economy.
California has very few major roads crossing its border, with >100 miles of largely vacant buffer space surrounding the population centers.
A very large percentage of the CA population do not feel particular affinity to the USA, and are reconsidering their cooperation therewith.
Seems there is an idea whose time is coming.
Couple enough discontent and grievances with enough people choosing non-cooperation simultaniously, sparked by a single mass-media-spread meme, and cooperation ends.

Birth pangs indeed.

I find it amusing to see the old guard liberal techniques making a spectacular failure here.

You can only cow petulant whites with the mental health counselors. The blacks and hispanics will just get madder.

A big turn of the dial closer to CWII.

It won’t be much longer when the blacks wake up and find that the Democratic Party has dumped them for 160m latinos. They will be the minority with no representation.

What will be even more amazing when the Democrats find out that the 160m latinos dump the party for their own Latino party and start making the SW a subset of Mexico. This will all be done w/o firing a shot.

Getting it back will be a different story.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$4

Spanish language school board meetings? Here in the U.S.? They can´t be serious.

Hm? Could this explain the rapid and explosive growth of homeschooling? Hopefully, smart Latinos and blacks will finally realize that trying to reform the government K-12 schools is like giving CPR to a dead horse at room temperature. Hopefully, they too will abandon the system.

Yes they can.
Bend over backwards for Invaders for decades and, donchaknowit,
they’ll realize they can actually rule the place.

With “other peoples’ money” of course.

Mayor Riordan gave it the old college try a few years back to fix
LA Unified...but he was effectively defeated within a year or less.

This is just another chapter in the dis-education enterprise otherwise
known as “LA Mummified”.

"It looks like English, assimulation and education are out of the picture."

Of course it is. With the La Raza/MEChA types holding sway over city government, this was entirely predictable. And it will only grow worse. After several generations of illegal aliens/anchor babies, this pack of undesirables can vote in who they want. LA city government today is nothing more than a branch office of Mexico.

A more concise form:

One day some time ago, an old black lady got tired of having to go to the back of the bus.
So she sat in the front.
And thus began one of the most violent and contentious times of our nation’s history.
