"In Lyra's world, a person's soul lives on the outside of their body, in the form of a daemon--an animal spirit that accompanies them through life. A child's daemon can change shape, assuming all the forms that a child's potential inspires; but as a person ages, their daemon gradually settles into one form, according to their character and nature...In our world, it is possible that people that people have daemons as well, only they are invisible. If you would like to learn more about your daemon, and create a daemon avatar to take out into the world with you, select 'Meet Your Daemon'."

Shame on Nicole Kidman for starring in this.
According to the Snopes.com site the movie has been watered down considerably and it’s a tossup whether the books are anti-religious in general or anti-christian in particular.
Narnia and Middle Earth are one thing but I never quite knew what to make of the Wrinkle in Time/Wind in the Door/Swiftly Tilting Planet series, but as love and self-sacrifice figure heavily in them I’d guess they get a thumbs-up.
Another sign the end times are here.
Is Matt Daemon in it?
These books are very bad. No one should let their children read these books or see the movie. The author is consciously promoting evil as good, and denigrating Christianity as the cause of the world's problems. This is not harmless fun.
another problem with this movie, from what I hear is they don’t come out with the blatant anti christian stuff in this movie,so when you warn others they will tell you they didnt see that...however if the rest of the books are made then it will be seen.
I read the Golden Compass Trilogy when it first came out. It is a vile attack on Christianity, all the viler because the author hides his purposes until the end. It is purposely designed to lead children astray.
The ultimate message is that God is a tyrant (based on Blake’s Nobodaddy, I would say) who must be overthrown, and that the answer to all our problems is to indulge in sex and self-love.
Not suitable for children AT ALL. Highly subversive.
Why even give the trailer site hits?
Who is the author and what is their agenda?
Yes, in the first book of the trilogy it is hardly noticeable, but it keeps leading readers down the road until it becomes explicit at the end of the third novel.
The would be the recently departed Madeline L’Engle.
She certainly had her fans here.
It looks like a stinker and another in a long line of Kidman bombs.
These books were written by an atheist. They are deliberately anti-Christian and anti-religious.
I actually liked The Invasion. I might be the only one.
For sure they’re anti-God. This particular story, it is my understanding, is about killing God and spreading an atheistic message.
I have read all three books. In order to save humanity, they have to depend on the evil pair from the first book (who turn out to be good from the author’s point of view.) Why are they good? They are on a mission to end tyranny by killing god (who is so old and weak that he lives in a glass case to protect him from the wind) and his lt. Lyra’s gift with the alethiometer is grace from the other angels who are helping in the rebellion against heaven.
This is the first set of books that I could find nothing redeeming in them. I tossed them in the trash and I never do that. I go to see every fantasy that comes out... but not this one. Anyone that I can warn against it will hear so they can decide on their own if it is something they can see.
I think you might be the only one who saw it.
There was me, my date and maybe 15 other people in the theater. So that's atleast 17.
hehheh
I was thinking about reading A Wrinkle In Time to my daughter. Is there something objectionable to this book? I've never read it, but thought it was suppose to be a classic.
I have not read the books but have read what you just wrote in other places. I will take a gander at his work in the bookstore. No need to fund his dark mission, aye? Doesn’t Nicole call herself Catholic? I think I saw a tv interview somewhere where this author admitted as much about his own work. I believe he said he had that intent in mind. But I can not remember where and exactly when so can’t quote it. If I was a parent I would not expose my child to this unless I was prove positive its message and intent were not evil.
INTREP
They are anti-Christian but postively pro-atheist faith in a “no god god”. Atheist fundamentalism at its best.
Our daughter read this trilogy. She said it was an interesting storyline, but she recognized the anti-God attitude of it immediately. Didn’t shake her faith any.
Madeline L’Engle’s trilogy is a wonderful set of books, but they’re probably better for older elementary and young teenagers. She did another one that involved the twins of the Murray family, called “Many Waters”. In that one, the boys are messing around in their father’s workshop and get transported back in time to just before The Flood. They meet Noah and his family. It was a terrific book, but some of the subject matter is better for young teenagers and up.
I always get a kick out of these atheists that believe Christianity or any religion is essentially a fairy tale of supernatural basis but then embraces a supernatural angle such as karma or whatever the heck the author called it (too lazy to backpage)
According to the Snopes.com website the author is an Athiest writer from England, Peter Hitchens, AKA; Phillip Pullman. His intent is to promote Ahieism. The movie, “Golden Compass” is scheduled to come to theaters December 7th. I would not allow any child to see the movie or read his Anti-Religion books!
I browsed these in the bookstore and found them repellent. However, I find it hard to identify them with atheism, per se. To me, atheism is a doctrine of hard-core rationalism whereas these books are founded in mysticism and superstition. I suppose the style is “magical realism”, which goes a long way towards explaining their popularity.
Yet another Hollywood film I refuse to spend good money to see.
I saw the trailer on TV for the first time today.
For better news, I went to a meeting of the C S Lewis society a couple of days ago. They showed a long trailer of - Expelled - No Intelligence Allowed (it looks fantastic!) and had a poster of the new Prince Caspian movie, supposed to be out in 2008.
Snopes says Jesus isn’t mentioned in the books, so they are more “anti religion” rather than “anti Christianity”.
I have not read the books, but if the name of the evil God is Yahweh, who does she think Yahweh is? She obviously is unfamiliar with biblical names.
Snopes is incorrect. One of the main ‘religious’ characters comes ‘to her senses’ and says: ‘The Christian religion is a very powerful and convincing mistake, that’s all’. This is at the end of the trilogy, when God’s archangel has been killed, and the weak, foolish God is destroyed by a puff of wind.
Knowledge is a tool given to us by God. Shouldn’t people know what they are taking their children to see?
As a sci-fi fan, if I had seen the trailer *before* hearing about this (my sister told me about all of this yesterday) I in all probabability might have taken her to see the movie based on how ‘good’ the trailer looks, because it mimics Narnia, which we loved...now I have become more informed, and
we will steer clear of it like the plague!
I read them and threw them out...they were given to my children as gifts.
Send the page number to Snopes and they will correct. Do you have it?
I think you skimmed the Snopes article too quickly. Peter Hitchens is not AKA Philip Pullman. Hitchens is the brother of athiest Christopher Hitchens, and was mentioned in the article as being a Christian who is trying to bring the anti-God aspects of the novels to people's attention.
My question was rhetorical, people should know exactly whom it writing these novels and what their motives are. We won’t be seeing the movie as tempting as it is.
A wrinkle in time is an excellent book and the author was a christian.
No. Wouldn’t read that trash. I found the quote through Google, then used Google to find several non related reviews using the same line, confirming its accuracy. There are a couple of pig farms in the area, if I wanted to dip myself in this kind of stuff.

My advice—ignore “Godless Compost” and go see BELLA instead.
Athiest who has said he would like to “kill God” and in the third book, does. (Well, sort of...”god” turns out to be an angel, an evil one, who is impersonating god...sombody correct me if I am wrong.
“the answer to all our problems is to indulge in sex and self-love.”
That seems to be the mantra of today’s society at large.
Any Catholics in here...isn't this a Latin term for the Vatican, or something?
As a bibliophile, take a look at the two paragraph summary on the back of the Trilogy softback, then compare it with what you have read here as spoilers. I had my eldest daughter read the back cover, and noted that while the description highlights the classic fantasy elements ("epic battle between good and evil", monsters and angels) you have to make it to the second book to find out that their "angels" are a con-game and are the bad guys. More "bait and switch" for the parents who might buy the book for Christmas...
Looke really "Naria-ish" to me, what with the polar bears in battle armor.
I have a question about Harry Potter since I know very little about the books (have only read an excerpt or two from them). - In the Potter books, was there ever a single Muggle (mortal human being) who wasn’t depicted as a stupid, bungling, mean being? - Honestly, I’m just asking. I do not know the answer to this question and would like to not have to read the books to find out. I’m currently reading Brenda Rickman Vantrease’s novel, “The Illuminator” (about Wycliffe), have just had eye surgery recently, and so am limited on the time my eyes can handle reading. So, I’m looking for the easy way out, I know. Hope that’s okay.
