The first month of fiscal 2008 was a success for all active and reserve military components. In a meeting with Pentagon reporters today, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said all components met or exceeded their recruiting and accession goals for October.
On the active-duty side, the Army made 101 percent of its goal of 4,500, with 4,564 recruits. The Navy made 100 percent of its goal of 2,788 recruits. The Marine Corps made 102 percent of its goal of 2,720, with 2,788 enlisting. The Air Force made 100 percent of its goal of 2,656.

The military exceeded its FY 07 recruiting goals, and is on track with the FY 08 recruiting.

The Guard and reserve components did very well in October, Whitman said. The Air National Guard made 134 percent of its goal of 609 accessions, actually signing up 818 airmen. The Army National Guard also had a very good month, signing up 123 percent of its goal of 4,311 soldiers. The Army Guard signed up 5,305 men and women. Draft, my arse!

Of course the idiot dems continue to try and undermine our fine young military force for their political agenda but I think most Americans are awake to the threat and are patriotic. At least I hope so.

How about the goals for minorities, particularly blacks. I’ve heard some black leaders speaking out about fighting the white man’s war and that sort of thing.

Well, pardon me for being cynical, but my take is the military set their recruitment goals low enough to allow them to meet or barely exceed them.
However, if they say it's enough, who am I to argue?

There remains in the Republic, those few, who are still all about what this Country stands for and remains to many of us. They are brave young men and women who answer the call. They answer the call to defend the Republic. To learn life skills that you cannot learn at McDonalds, K-Mart, Wal Mart, or Papa John’s Pizza delivery. They learn what it means to be defenders of the flag. To stand up and do what is right. To do it while many in this Republic spit at them, hate them, call them 4-letter word names. But, they stand and rise above those sickening pukes. These young folks deserve our support. I love and cherish each and every one of them who stand up, are counted as defenders of the Republic. I would take these few over those millions of socialist, liberal, Dimocrat voting pukes.

Works for me.
We have two stock boys (still in High School for now) that work for us; one is ARNG and the other is going to be a Marine. We’re most likely hiring a friend of theirs that is also going into the military, but I don’t know which branch, yet.
They get no end of amusement out of the fact that someone as “old” as their Mother is a retired Army Vet. They love it when I call them “Maggot,” LOL!
These kids are AWESOME and have a whole host of opportunities open to them. They’re all three white, upper-middle class kids that could easily say “Screw it” and live off of Mom and Dad through their college years if they chose to.
Instead, they’ve elected to serve and defend the rest of us.
Go figure! :)

Yep, we've set recruitment records, all right!
- Record recruitment bonuses
- Record waivers (for felony recruits)
- Etc.
I don't wish to understate success, but let's not get like the lefties, who change the rules and claim victory (like expanding the definition of AIDS in the 80s and 90s so they could keep the numbers increasing).
I'm glad we are meeting the revised goals, but let's call a spade a spade and fix the problems (including deployment rules and even the reliance on the National Guard for extended overseas offensive campaigns), rather than ignore them. As Michael Boucai points out:
"The problem is not that the armed forces are letting in ex-offenders - most of the recruits become fine service members, and military service often has a strong rehabilitative effect. The real problem is that, increasingly, the military fails to also recruit the best and the brightest."
God bless those great recruits who serve and who have served. I hope for our country's sake--and theirs--that we can overcome the Bush-Clinton-Bush "peace dividend" debacle.
- "Moral waivers" issued from 2003-2006: 125,525
- Percent of 2006 Army recruits with criminal background: 12

I attended the local Veterans Day parade and was impressed with the number of kids in the area ROTC programs. Wave after wave of high school kids marching down the main drag. The parade lasted over an hour, and most of it was ROTC.
