Romney Assails Giuliani, Huckabee on Tuition Breaks for Illegal Immigrants

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney, seeking to protect his lead and fend off challenges from rivals in this early-voting state, assailed Rudy Giuliani and Mike Huckabee over supporting tuition breaks and broader sanctuary for illegal immigrants or their children.

The former Massachusetts governor singled out two of his Republican opponents and likened them to Democratic front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton, saying Tuesday: "There are those people in both parties who are in a sanctuary state of mind, who believe in sanctuary cities, who believe in policies which are sanctuary in nature."

In campaign appearances and advertisements in Iowa and elsewhere, Romney is increasingly using illegal immigration to differentiate himself from the rest of his opponents. The issue is particularly salient in Iowa's ultra-conservative western region, given the influx of immigrants coming to work in fields and factories in recent years.

Fred probably would leave it up to the states. That’s his answer for everything.

All these candidates need to be exposed on the illegal alien issue and other issues. Too much dancing around already, but in terms of which candidates can appeal to red states that actually vote Republican in general elections, I think it’s between Romney and Thompson, once voters are clear on where all candidates stand on key issues.

I think this country club Republican strategy where blue states nominate through the primaries a candidate (Rudy) the red states will have to elect in November of 2008 is a recipe for disaster.

Fred has already given his position and, no, that is not it. But I suspect you knew that already.

“Pretty soon, Southern white guys like me may be in the minority,” Huckabee said jokingly as the crowd roared in laughter.”

Just the sort of sentiment one can expect from guilt-ridden white guys, or those who think American residency or citizenship is a gift they personally have to offer the world’s poor.

We don’t need those sentiments in positions of leadership.

“This is the same BS story. Romney hired (legally) a company and it is illegal to check the immigration status of those employees.”

Romney hired a shady landscaping business that did not pay taxes and employed Central American illegals. In all those years Romney knew those foreign, non English speaking men, that lived a life of working for cash and avoiding the IRS, yet he never suspicioned that they may be illegal.

Romney was not required to continue to employ those landscapers for 10 years and to recommend them to other people.

For those of us that know of the world of illegals you won’t be able to sell us the impossibility of picking and choosing who you make your long term relationships with.

I don’t tolerate illegals working at my home or business, or even for my subs, this is like all questions related to Romney, there is always the uncomfortable truths.

It could simply be that Freddie doesn’t have the pro illegal record that Rudy and Huck have.

Mitt has enormous credibility on this issue since he denied driver's licenses to illegals in Massachusetts way back in 2003.

Governor Romney opposed efforts to give driver's licenses to illegal aliens. "Those who are here illegally should not receive tacit support from our government that gives an indication of legitimacy," the governor said, echoing arguments that opponents have voiced in the Commonwealth and in other states considering similar license measures. "If they are here illegally, they should not get driver's licenses," he said. (Scott S. Greenberger, "Romney Stand Dims Chances Of License For Undocumented," The Boston Globe, 10/28/2003)

Governor Romney vetoed an outside section of the 2005 state budget that would have permitted illegal aliens to pay the same in-state tuition rate paid by Massachusetts citizens at state public colleges and universities. (Office Of The Governor, "Romney Signs $22.402B Fiscal Year 2005 'No New Tax' Budget," Press Release, 6/25/2004)

Here is how it breaks down for me, personally speaking with these guys and myself in the general election. Your mileage may vary. If the nominee is Hitlery or Obama or Edwards or whomever on the Democrat side, and, on the GOP side,

GIULIANI: Third Party Conservative

McCAIN: Third Party Conservative

HUCKABEE: Third Party Conservative

ROMNEY: Third Party Conservative

THOMPSON: Probably Thompson

HUNTER: Hunter

TANCREDO: Tancredo

PAUL: Probably Paul

Well, you seem to be intent on suicide, since the only people you will vote for probably won’t get the nominaton.

Wow... The only one that’s a deal breaker for me is Giuliani. I’ll admit some of the others aren’t great, and I’d have to cover my eyes pulling that lever. You can vote for who you want, of course, and we’ve already compromised more than enough with the GOP, but I don’t think the other candidates will do the irreversible damage to conservative influence that Giuliani would.

If my pizza delivery man spoke no English, you can be darn tootin I’d be reporting the company to www.wehirealiens.com for suspected hiring of illegal aliens. I’d also let the company know I’d done so. I wouldn’t ignore it for years while greeting the delivery man in Spanish, as the Romney’s did their landscapers.

The Council of Foreign Relations summary of Huckabee on Immigration tells us all we need to know:

Immigration

The former Arkansas governor has openly sympathized with the needs of illegal immigrants. He has advocated prenatal care for pregnant immigrants and has proposed a scholarship program for illegal immigrants who graduate from Arkansas high schools (Arkansas News Bureau). He also criticized a 2005 federal immigration raid (AP) in Arkansas. Huckabee has expressed support for amnesty for illegal immigrants under some conditions. In an interview with ABC-TV’s George Stephanopoulos, he said, “We should have a process where people can pay the penalties, step up and accept responsibility for not being here legally.” He added: “The objective is not to be punitive. The objective is to make things right.” He has also expressed support for some type of barrier along the border with Mexico.
