Help Arrives for Homeless Newborn Triplets, Mom
Tuesday, November 13, 2007
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. Offers of help are pouring in for a homeless Michigan woman who recently gave birth to triplets.
"We have received hundreds of calls," said Janie Bergeron, who directs Green Gables Haven, a Barry County shelter where Monica Roberts, her babies and her mother are staying.
Bergeron's staff is working overtime this week to return telephone messages.
"There are literally hundreds of people we're trying to call back," she told The Grand Rapids Press for a story published Tuesday.
Invitations to take in the 33-year-old mother and her babies have been proffered by people in Holland, Kalamazoo, Lansing and beyond.
A man in Allendale offered an apartment and all utilities free of charge. Other offers some of complete apartments and others that would require the family to share space have come from six counties.
At St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlotte, about 15 miles southwest of Lansing, the Rev. Denis Spitzley held up a story about the family's plight that he had clipped from Friday's edition of a newspaper. He implored those attending three weekend Masses to consider donating to a special offering for them.
RelatedStories Homeless And Out of Work, Michigan Woman Gives Birth to Triplets Spitzley ended up collecting $2,059 more than the $2,000 that people typically bring to the altar in a weekend, said Hope Steele, a secretary at the parish of about 400 families.
Roberts' life began to unravel just over a year ago, when she lost her job, was evicted from her Middleville apartment and became overwhelmed by several thousand dollars of debt.

Sweet little babies. For their sake, I hope the mother will get her life back on the right track, with all this help.
What a terrific All-American guy!!
Please advise where donations may be made.
Lady, beware. You just moved into position for big league predators.

“Roberts said she became pregnant by a man whom she met at a tavern. She said she has not had contact with the father in about six months, after she told him she was expecting triplets.”
I’d say this was a signfiicant part of the unraveling of her life.
Shoot me if you want, but I honestly think adoption would give the babies better odds.
I have a bad feeling about this.
You may be right. I don’t know the mother personally, so I can’t say one way or the other. People can fall on hard times (often with the help of their own stupidity) without necessarily being unfit parents. But again, who knows...
I’m just thinking of the statistical probabilities, not anything about this woman personally.
Must have been a friendly conversation. :-/
Imagine that.
This is how it’s supposed to be, individuals helping each other.
I’m not shooting you.
God Bless the babies they are beautiful. Secondly, I wish her luck and a bright future for her and her little ones. One question, where is her family? Why could she not reach out to them?/Just Asking - seoul62......
“Imagine that.”
I know I’m stunned. One would think a guy you met in a bar would be a real stand-up person.
I DO wish her the best, however. I hope she turns things around and that all these folks offering help are sincere and honest.
It’s in the best interest of the children to be raised in a family (husband/wife). She has an opportunity to do what’s best for these children but I think these offers of help will hinder that.
Yes, you’re right.
No shots coming from me.
Adoption.
Agreed.
Getting pregnant by a man she met at a bar who disappeared, losing her job, and being evicted, sends up red flags to me.
The offers of help are great but after what I’ve seen of the welfare lifestyle, it’s usually taken for granted and abused and thus don’t work in the long term. Those babies need a chance at a decent life in a stable home.
Id say this was a signfiicant part of the unraveling of her life.
I’m guessing her life has been jacked-up for a long, long time before this event.
What was she doing at the bar if she had lost her job and was having such terrible financial problems? Seems her priorities are a bit screwed up!
I’d like to see something detailing how she lost her job. Did the business fail? Downsizing? Her own misconduct?
Nowif they were all baby girls, well???
I'm thankful this woman chose life for these babies, but I hope she's learned a lesson - don't sleep around if you in a position to raise the child (or children) you may be conceiving.
Wow, the baby on the left is a lot bigger than the other two.
What sweeties! And what wonderful people have come forward with offers of help!
That’s the American way...without using the awful government services.
I don’t disagree,
but how many people would adopt triplets?
Dittos to your post! Another thought — shouldn’t the “father” be taking on some of the responsibility here??
Only one willing and suitable couple would be needed!
Based on the number of couples who adopt sibling groups of children from overseas, I don’t think it would be difficult to find an adoptive family for three healthy American babies.
True,
though I am not very pro-US adoption. It’s ridiculously expensive and in this case, the birth mother would have a high chance of re-appearing in the kids lives. Which I could see happening in this situation.
More power to them, if they do exist though. I’m having enough trouble dealing with rogue rabbits right now.
There’s a lot of details missing, just enough information to engender sympathy. That makes me suspicious.
I agree, the adoption system in the U.S. is a disaster. As nobody in the news has mentioned adoption, then the best hope for these children is that their mother will use the resources that are being offered for their benefit.
If nothing else, she should stop have sex with creeps she meets in bars.
Good luck with the rabbits. If my kitten was there, she would help!
“I know Im stunned. One would think a guy you met in a bar would be a real stand-up person.”
It reminds me of that line from “Arthur”:
“You’re a hooker? I thought I was just doing great with you!”
Maybe they have already 'helped' and it didn't help. I'm just sayin'.
