Blacks divide along class lines (Majority Blame individual For Economic Failings)
LA Times ^ | 14 November 2007 | Maura Reynolds

A majority of black Americans blame individual failings -- not racial prejudice -- for the lack of economic progress by lower-income African Americans, according to a survey released Tuesday -- a significant change in attitudes from the early 1990s.

At the same time, black college graduates say the values of middle-class African Americans are more closely aligned with those of middle-class whites than those of lower-income blacks, the poll by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found.

And 40% of those surveyed said African Americans could no longer be viewed as a single community.

The report said that in 1994, 60% of African Americans believed racial prejudice was the main thing keeping blacks from succeeding economically. Only 33% blamed the individual. Though views on the issue have shifted over time, this was the first year that a majority of blacks, 53%, said individuals were responsible for their own condition.

At the same time, the survey found that most blacks believed racial prejudice was still a widespread problem in America.

Pew President said that about 60% of African Americans surveyed said blacks often faced discrimination when they applied for jobs or housing. Just 20% of whites agreed with the employment assessment of blacks and 27% with the housing.

One result of shifting views on individual responsibility may be changes in blacks' attitudes toward immigrants. In 1986, 74% of blacks said they would have more economic opportunities if there were fewer immigrants; today, 48% feel that way.

Most blacks and whites who participated in the poll agreed that immigrants tended to work harder at low-wage jobs than workers of their own groups.

On the topic of diverging values, 44% of blacks polled in 1986 said they saw greater differences created by class than by race. Today, that figure has grown to 61%.

This is an ever growing opportunity of conservatives to appeal to those who see the individual as the solution for most problems.

What do they expect when they strut in looking like gangstas with do-rags, pants hanging down to their knees, speaking ebonics, and grabbing their nether regions?

Call it what you might.
A larger percentage of serious crimes are committed by a small percentage of the overall population.
If that group of crime minded happened to be 85 year old Quaker widows then I think most folks may be reluctant to rent
to or take tea with them too.

I actually had someone come in for an interview last month dressed like that. The job posting stated must speak English properly and clearly. Less than 5 minutes into the interview it was over after having to ask “What did you just say?”. Ebonics, street slang & hip hop talk have no place in my department where we have to deal with multi million dollar customers.

I note they feel things are worse because only 20% think things are improving. It seems to me, the authors of the piece you referenced want there to be either no or retrograde progress come hell or high water.

Encouraging, and the exact opposite of what I read in an article last night that I then posted.

I just cross-referenced the other thread.

It’s funny how two difference sources will present such opposing views on the same study.

So there’s hope. Now we need the blacks to dump the democrat party and other liberals which keep them down, and lift themselves out of the hole that liberals have put them in.

A very, very important step towards moving up, forward, away, and out of poverty.
Both these poverty and welfare preaching apostles Jackson and Sharpton feed on poverty and would lose their very base of existence when their current helpless adherents move up and away from this never ending welfare cycle.

If TRUE -— very heartening and uplifting..

Perhaps there is hope they can get the rest OFF the DNC plantation of doom and gloom.....

Too many fine blacks in America have contributed too much and spilled too much blood for the Republic to remain enslaved by the DNC and anchored in the despair of DNC dependency....

I’ll really celebrate if they ever work up the courage to figuratively hang their Jesse Jacksons, Al Sharptons and Calipso Louie Farrakhans — shut down the NAACP, Congressional Black Caucus and become simply AMERICANS.

I would welcome a move in this direction but must say if this is true it is not reflected in voting patterns, support or opposition to the liberal agenda, to socialist welfare schemes or to conservative proposals promoting individuality and self reliance over group identity politics.

With few exceptions blacks reliably come down on the side of liberal and leftist social engineers and propagandists time after time.
With the same few exceptions, when is the last time you have heard blacks or black organizations clammoring for lower taxes, less welfare and fewer taxpayer funded handouts to the lazy and indolent?

Look at the outrage recently directed at Bill Cosby when he dared to suggest that black students and parents are responsible for the failure of blacks to succeed in school or in jobs and careers.

The democrats are so confident their pandering to blacks will hold the black vote that they don't show any concern when republicans try to woo blacks away.
