Get Kids Vaccinated Or Else, Parents Told
Washington Post ^ | 14 Nov 2007 | Nelson Hernandez

The parents of more than 2,300 Prince George's County students who failed to get needed vaccinations could face fines of $50 a day and up to 10 days in jail if their children do not meet the state's immunization requirements, county officials said yesterday.

The threat of legal action is a last resort after months in which Prince George's has struggled to get its 131,000 students immunized for chicken pox and hepatitis B, as mandated by the state.

More than 2,300 students have not been immunized and have been barred from attending schools, almost two months after a Sept. 20 deadline for meeting the requirement.

"We can do this the easy way or the hard way, but it's got to get done," Prince George's State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey (D) said at a news conference in Upper Marlboro.

"I'm willing to move forward with legal action." School officials have made calls, sent letters and conducted home visits to make arrangements for free appointments for the needed shots.

But often the students' addresses and phone numbers have been outdated, making contacting them difficult. Other students have received the vaccines but failed to get the necessary booster shots.

The school system turned to the justice system as a final option and received the backing of Circuit Judge William D. Missouri, the county's administrative judge, and Circuit Judge C. Philip Nichols Jr., who handles juvenile matters.

"This is an educational crisis," said R. Owen Johnson Jr., chairman of the school board. "This is a public health and a children's rights issue."

This is insanity.

How would an unvaccinated kid create a threat to a vaccinated kid?

Just one more reason among so many to Home School. Your kids will be smarter and healthier.

I think an unvaccinated kid would create a threat to another unvaccinated kid.

I think there is a possibility you can still catch the disease even if you are vaccinated.

I wonder what they will do about the illegals.

I think if people want their children to attend the government’s schools, they have to follow the government’s rules.

Can’t profile! Despite the fact that illegals are bringing with them all their 3rd world diseases with them.

The chicken pox vaccine wears off after a number of years, and now we have problems with “vaccinated” college kids getting it.

It is better to get your chicken pox as a small fry.

Young children are not normally at risk for hepatitis B, and the first generation of that vaccine had a high rate of nasty side effects, including bowel detachment.

It is a public health and Children's rights issue. And there is some debate as to what those Children's rights actually are. Should they have a right to opt out of the vaccine to avoid certain reactions? While I do support vaccination, it sure doesn't help to know that our education systems is mixed up on this at any level.

Is the chicken pox shot mandated in most states now?

"I wonder what they will do about the illegals."

Nothing. Illegals are a protected class.

When I was a kid, we didn’t get too many vaccinations — polio for sure and I think later whooping cough and/or diptheria. I don’t even know if they had chicken pox, mumps or measles vaccines back then. Anyway, I had the pox, measles and mumps — in fact, I had 2 bouts of measles, including the German strain. The nice thing was that once I had them, I never had them again. When you’re a kid and you contract these diseases, you bounce back fairly quickly. I know some who contracted these diseases as adults and suffered greatly.

The only problem is that now I’m hard of hearing. According to some studies, people who have had any or all of the three childhood diseases are at risk for deafness later on in life. Of course, mine could also be due to a lot of loud rock music too. :)

I know people who have chicken pox parties. When one child catches it, they bring their children to visit and catch it so that they won't catch it later in life. I always thought chicken pox parties was a terrible idea. But your comment makes me wonder if they have the right idea after all...

I think people need to understand your concept in its fullness -

when you rely on the government to supply a good or service instead of providing it for yourself, you have to live by their dictates.

Think about how this applies to socialized healthcare. EVERY behavior can be deemed to affect the healthcare system, so EVERY behavior will be regulated/controlled.
