Sen. Dianne Feinstein has signed on to lead next June's ballot campaign aimed at revitalizing Candlestick Point and keeping the 49ers in San Francisco.
Joining Feinstein as co-chairs of the campaign: former Mayor Willie Brown and Hunters Point-area Supervisor Sophie Maxwell.
Word that DiFi will suit up comes a few weeks after Mayor Gavin Newsom tapped former 49ers executive Carmen Policy to act as civic go-between with the team and the National Football League.
The 49ers are still intent on moving to Santa Clara, despite objections of Cedar Fair, the company that runs Great America and whose parking lot the team has been eyeing for its stadium.
In the meantime, San Francisco officials are rolling ahead with a ballot measure asking voters to approve a mixed-use development at Candlestick Point, along with the possibility of a new stadium at the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard.
Feinstein is partial to keeping the team in San Francisco and says she has good reason - even if she does represent the entire state.
"I'm a lifelong San Franciscan, a former mayor, a former supervisor," she said. "I think people understand that."
Besides, she says, Bayview-Hunters Point "is one area of the city I care deeply about."
The NFL is also getting involved in San Francisco's effort. The league hired Icon Venue Group, a sports and entertainment development firm that helped build Denver's new Invesco Field football stadium, to work on San Francisco's project. (The company, by the way, is partly owned by San Francisco Examiner owner Philip Anschutz.)
The idea is to keep the momentum going in San Francisco, while freeing the Niners to keep pursuing and remain publicly committed to a Santa Clara move.

This is more about San Francisco politics than the 49ers, but it is NFL related.
She may as well be doing that, at least she will be doing SOMETHING while getting paid by the tax payers.
How far is Santa Clara from San Francisco? Is it that far a move?

About 50 miles.
About 35 miles straight down the freeway (plus on and off). The total's around 40 miles.
Hmmm, it’s not that far from SF. I wonder if they’d still call themselves the SF 49ers

Since neither the NY Giants nor the NY Jets play within the state of New York, I don't see why they wouldn't. :=)
during rush hour from downtown SF to SC it’s easily an hour.
