Clintons Inevitability Evaporates in Iowa, while Thompson Fades Away
About that inevitability thing . . . just kidding.
Barely 50 days before Iowa, it matters about as much as Dick Cheney's approval ratings, or Barry Bonds' contract situation, or Robert Novak's newest secret source.
Ladies and gentleman, we have ourselves a race.
Toss out the 30-point lead in the national polls, the fundraising edge, the long list of endorsements, the bold predictions of Terry McAuliffe, Mark Penn, even Bill Clinton himself.
The new ABC News/Washington Post poll has Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., up on Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., in Iowa -- really in a statistical tie in the state where they could be playing for all the marbles. It's Obama 30, Clinton 26, and former senator John Edwards, D-N.C., 22 -- setting up a three-way scramble for the top spot in a state that's notoriously difficult to call in advance.
The worrisome signs for Clinton aren't so much in Obama's movement (and her lack thereof) as they are inside the numbers.
"A growing focus on fresh ideas coupled with lingering doubts about Hillary Clinton's honesty and forthrightness are keeping the Democratic presidential contest close in Iowa," ABC polling director Gary Langer reports.
"Most Democratic likely voters in Iowa, 55 percent, say they're more interested in a 'new direction and new ideas' than in strength and experience, compared with 49 percent in July -- a help to Obama, who holds a substantial lead among 'new direction' voters," Langer continues.
The comparable number favoring "strength and experience" is 33 percent.

There's not much Hillary can spin on character. She doesn't have any and everyone knows it.
Obama v. Guilianni anyone?
Who's still got "lingering doubts"? Everyone knows she's a liar and a crook - just ask Hsu, for starters.
Yes. Obama is full of fresh ideas. Surrender in Iraq. Socialized medicine at home. Blah blah blah. I've never heard any of those ideas before. They are so fresh and new.
Periodically, Americans go nuts and confuse new packaging with new ideas. Remember Gary Hartpence?. He ran around saying he had new ideas for months. Never heard one. But he said they were new. And the media slobbered on him until Mondale killed him with the "Where's the Beef" ad and he destroyed his career on the Monkey Business.
It sounds like the media push of the month is on "fresh ideas." This is the third time I've run across the phrase. That means we'll be hearing it a lot more in the near future. And it will almost never be accompanied by any ideas of substance, unless you think "We should have a better economy" or "The world should live in peace" are substantive ideas. In that case, you are already a liberal.
I’m so stunned with the idiocy of a Hillary Clinton candidacy that I don’t know where to start. Why on Earth would anyone want to bring back the Clinton years of sleaze, with an added helping of socialism to boot?
But back to this story. At the very worst, it could be reporters looking to make the coverage more interesting - although it seems much, much more likely that the anti-Hillary sentiment is so strong that the MSM can no longer ignore it.
I have had the sneaking suspicion for a long time that Hillary’s candidacy will implode when exposed to the electorate, Like the EU constitution, or New Coke. I don’t say it’s going to happen, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
I can dream, can’t I?
...”lingering doubts about Hillary Clinton’s honesty and forthrightness”...
“Lingering doubts”??? It is well known to all of us here, and should be to outsiders, that if either Clinton’s lips are moving, he or she is lying. This statement reflects MSM bias toward the Clintons.
I’m dreaming right along with you.
And I cheer for anyone that can cause her to spend down that war che$t of hers before the real election begins. So, for now..go Obama!
Anyone who has ever been involved in a group brainstorming session knows that fresh ideas are a dime-a-dozen.
Even detailed plans don’t mean much — although they take a lot more effort than generating “ideas”.
The trick is in the execution of the plans — it takes leadership to execute a plan. The execution of the plan is also the acid test of the plan — that is, we don’t know how good the plan really is, until it’s put into action in the real world.
Hillary had a ridiculously detailed plan for socialized health care. She failed miserably on the execution of the plan — it was never put into action. No doubt the plan would have proven to be a disaster if it had been put into action.
I want to see her crushed, crushed I tell ya!
Then maybe they will just go away.
Look, HIllary has focused her campaign on her experience (real or not) and her understanding of how things work in Washington...This is where the Republicans needs to really go opposite - we have non-Washington candidates running in the lead (Rudy, Mitt) who need to bring enthusiasm, hope and positive ideas to the table. Issues, especially on the world front war, taxes, money, immigration are all issues that need to be focused on. Ultimately, it’s about LEADERSHIP...
“Obama v. Guilianni anyone?”
I would actually look forward to that - if it were the Democrat Primaries.
SwiftKids: Hillary Clinton
They have been playing these ads on Fox & Friends.
If these people are interested in a new direction; they should vote for Duncan Hunter.
I’ve said it before, Hillary is the Democrats’ version of Bob Dole. Republicans won a huge victory in 1994 and had Bill Clinton on the ropes, then they stupidly nominated Bob Dole. Nobody bought Dole as an agent of change. But it was “his turn” and there wasn’t a strong and credible challenger to him. Democrats today are feeling upbeat about regaining control of Congress in 2006, and I don’t think the rank and file Democratic primary voters really see Hillary as the agent of change to continue what was started in 2006. Obama is winning over Democrat voters who really want a change in government. He doesn’t have to get very specific about his ideas; he IS the idea.
These videos are made by lefties to accuse the Republicans of using kids for political attacks and hence generate sympathy toward the democrats, our side need to stop laughing at those ads as being “funny” and expose the people behind them.
Thanks for telling me...I heard the Friends on Fox roaring over them the other morning and I thought—how creepy!!!

These are basically just the sheeple who rely solely on the liberal-biased media for all of their political information. What else should we expect from a populace in which apathy reigns supreme and the ignorant masses cast their votes based on the last 5 second sound byte they heard?
