A joke that aired on the new Fox television show "Back to You" suggesting that Poles are Nazi collaborators has enraged some Polish Americans. They are calling for the owner of Fox, Rupert Murdoch, to apologize.
The chairman of the Polish American Congress's anti-bigotry committee, Frank Milewski, said he wrote a letter in response to the episode calling on Mr. Murdoch to meet with Polish Christians who survived Nazi concentration camps and Poles who have been honored by Israel for rescuing Jews during the Holocaust.

Sounds like the character who made the statement is an Archie Bunker-type who offends everybody. But, this is not the 70s Toto.
I am 1/4 Polish and this is just over the line. My Great-Grandfather came here in the 1890’s and when the war broke out, as he later told my father, his relatives were terrified to go West to the Nazis but they couldn’t go East either. The invading Soviet army was just as brutal, a very little recounted part of WWII history.
This is strange. Why target the Poles as Nazi collaborators?
Guess that the left hates Poland for being courageous to dump the Soviet Union.
Some Poles were Nazi collaborators, of course, but quite probably fewer than any other occupied country.
Not necessarily because Poles were superior human beings, but because Poland and Poles were singled out by the Nazis for special oppression. They weren’t given the option of collaboration, for the most part.
a lots of Jews (and some on this forum sadly) seem to think the Poles were in favor of the NAZIs. Of course that is absurd, but bigots are bigots.
I agree, I am a Polish-American, and I’ll even tell the occasional Polish joke or two, but I will not stand for anything that besmirches the honor of the brave Poles, who stood up to the Nazis at Westerplatte, and fought in the RAF, and at Monte Cassino.
Poland was the only Nazi-occupied country where aiding Jews in any matter was an automatic death sentence for the entire family of those who were aiding the Jews.
Next to Jews, no one suffered more during WW-2 than Poles. I didn’t hear the “joke” but wonder about their taste.

And the Poles got it from both the Nazis and the Soviets.
Maybe because the Poles are our strong allies in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Poles also fought valiantly before they were overwhelmed.

All people who love freedom have to feel a debt to Poland. I have absolutely no Slavic heritage, fwiw.
He could have substituted just about any other european nation (except england) and been correct. Ukraine, Denmark, France, Albania, Hungary, Italy, etc., all raised Waffen-SS divisions for Germany. Poland did not.
Our friends in Poland support the war on terror. Naturally the hollywood libs want to paint them as nazis.
That is a pretty despicable statement. Three million non-Jewish Poles were killed by the Nazis.

It doesn’t sound like a joke.
Actually I’ve seen some statistics that have MORE Poles than Jews murdered by the Nazis. Of the 20,000,000 civilians purposely killed, minus 6,000,000 Jews, leaves 14,000,000 more...and a majority of those were Poles.
In Sept 1939 Poland was invaded by two countries, Germany and the USSR. They were divided up and decimated by both occupiers. Polish Jewry was almost totally exterminated. Although the Poles fought bravely against both invaders. (check the stats on what they did o the Luftwaffe at the time), in the end they had no influence on what either occupier did.
This is leftist payback for Poland’s support of the WOT and western values.
No marxist in good standing could take a pass on these terrible thought crimes. Remember, these are the same folks who label Bush a fascist and Nazi.
Yet ask your average college graduate who was killed in the Holocaust by the Nazis, and most will only mention Jewish civilians.

Actually, the only people deserving of jokes about collaborating with the nazis are the French. There were people in many countries who did, but not wholesale fashion like the frogs. So I definitely agree with your take.
idk about all of ww2 (japan bombing pearl harbor, bluto blutarsky’s assrtions not withstanding, had to have something to do with it), but didn’t the poles fire across the border at german soldiers before hitler invaded?

I think maybe if the writers had any knowleadge about European history they would have used another country if they had to use the joke at all. It was probably sabotage if you think about the politics of Hollywood and the writers.
We have a very large Polish population that comes here to work in our casino industry. The Poles are an incredibly beautiful people. The women I’ve seen working in the Casinos are stunning.

I don’t know their nationality/ethicity but there were units dubbed “Galician” in the German order of battle in WWII, anti-partisan police (paramiltary) units if I recall. To be fair, not everyone in such units were volunteers. Anti-Russian feelings and anti-Communist convictions also motivated some who did volunteer. The borders of 1939 Poland also encompassed lots of people less than enthusiastic about being part of Poland.
Au contraire. Of the Western European occupied countries, the Netherlands were considerably worse in this regard than the French. The Danes were the best.
And of course of the eastern and southern European nations only the Yugoslavs (mostly the Serbs) and the Greeks resisted at all. The rest collaborated enthusiastically even without being occupied.

With very few exceptions, the Poles I have met are smart, hard-working, clean, frugal, decent people, kind of like Germans with fancy last names. Having met so many of them, I don't get the origin of those jokes.

I’ll take a try at this.
In WWII, the Polish underground had set up a phenomenal and effective system to fight the Nazi occupation, including aiding downed Allied flyers and killing Nazi collaborators. That underground relied on supplies - information, radios, weapons - from the western allies to continue the resistance. The Nazi propagandists embarked on a disinformation campaign, including “Poles are stupid” jokes, to discourage Allied aid. The Nazi message to the Allies was that Poles were too stupid to use your aid, so don’t bother doing it.
That, I’ve been told, is the origin and reasoning behind Polish jokes.
BTW, there is an excellent book written by a resistance fighter describing day to day life in Nazi occupied Poland.

Poles are European. In today’s demented PC-controlled world, Europeans are evil White oppressors and it is perfectly PC to trash them. That’s what’s wrong with this country.
