Republican Jon Bruning ended his U.S. Senate campaign on Tuesday night, deferring to and endorsing the candidate many consider a prohibitive front-runner, former governor and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns.
Nebraskas attorney general ended his five-month campaign after raising more than $1 million for his bid to succeed outgoing Republican Chuck Hagel, money Bruning said he will sit on to possibly use in a future run.
If I do my job, political opportunities will come, said Bruning, who is serving his second term as attorney general. The timing wasnt with me this time, but Im confident the time will come someday.

Welcome to the Senate, Mike Johanns.
What kind of Republicans are Johanns and Bruning?
Are they both stand-up conservatives?
They seem to be. Johanns has never held a Federal elective office, only state and local. Makes it kind of hard to gage him.
Essentially a don’t rock the boat “Establishment” guy. Not a Tom Coburn type.
...and Bruning is a former liberal Democrat. Whether he became Conservative out of conviction or out of ambition, it’s hard to tell.
Speaking of priorities... Pretty sad commentary on why some people chose to "serve". Something tells me he was not right for the real "job" of the Senator - representing the people of the state.
Yikes. I wouldn't want to chance anything with Bruning until he establishes his bona fides.
Go, Mike!
It says he was a former governor - - gotta be plenty of indicators from that job performance.
I didn’t know Bruning was a former liberal Democrat. When I heard he was running against Chuck Hagel because of his disagreement with Hagel on the war in Iraq, I sent Bruning $100.
Are you sure about his past?
The Hagel camp sent over its first barrage at Bruning, following the attorney generals teleconference Monday with reporters.
“With his record of credibility, we don’t put much stock in ‘polls’ Jon Bruning pays his pollster to produce, said Hagel political director Kevin Chapman. Whatever Jon Bruning claims, Nebraskans will not vote for a chameleon.
When Bill Clinton was president and the Democrats controlled Congress, Jon Bruning was a card-carrying pro-choice, pro-tax Democrat, Chapman. After a Republican Congress was elected in 1994, he transformed himself into a pro-life, anti-tax Republican.
Chapman said Bruning previously told people, including Hagel, that he would support the senator for re-election, or in a bid for the Republican nomination for president.

At the time he was a Democrat, he was still in law school.
I don’t mind if people change for the better, see the idiocy of their former ways (look at David Horowitz, for example) but like said, Bruning needs time to establish his bona fides. I hope he is genuine about his recovery and if so, I’ll support him vigorously.
True. I can’t cast too many stones since I was a yoot Socialist in my teens. ;-)
Congress needs more Tom Coburn types.
