U.S. warships refused entry to Hong Kong port

HONG KONG, China (AP) -- A flotilla of U.S. warships carrying as many as 8,000 American sailors was refused entry to Hong Kong's port, the U.S. Navy said Thursday, in an unusual twist to relations strained by disputes over trade and Iran's nuclear program.

China watchers said it was the first time they had heard of a ship being turned away from Hong Kong waters, although during periods of tense China-U.S. relations Beijing had refused requests for U.S. ships to make port calls to the former British colony.

Since they will be in the area, they should just make their port of call in Taiwan instead :-)

That’s so frustrating (for the families/sailors). During the Vietnam era, my parents had a sweet little rendezvous in Hong Kong (mini belated honeymoon). He has served aboard the Kitty Hawk but at the time, he was on the Midway and we were stationed in Japan. We had to stay behind with a sitter.

This is a very petty petulant act on the part of the Chicoms. They basically screwed a bunch of military families and broke a lot of kids and spouses hearts. The Chicoms are absolute bastards and I wish the politicians in this country would wake up to that fact.

BTW the same business types who want open borders and amnesty love “free trade” with China. There’s nothing more expensive than cheap labor and few things more dangerous to our long term economic and military health than “free trade” with China.

Yet another reminder that Chicoms are SCUM of the earth. They run a slave labor society devoid of political and human rights, they are helping Iran and Cuba and North Korea and all the world’s worst regimes to continue on their paths of depravity, etc. etc. Now they jerk our military families around like yo-yos.....

Just remember how they almost killed and then so badly mistreated our P-3 crew while stealing all of our hi-tech equipment.....

Hey Chicom scum, keep in mind that you crave the world’s recognition and support during the Beijing Olympics next summer — we can still really screw that up for you, and we should!!!!

SHANGHAI, Sept 7 — TWO Chinese warships sailed into Pearl Harbor as hundreds of Chinese well-wishers waved Chinese and American flags from a pier and shouted greetings of “Huanying!” or “Welcome!” The Associated Press said today.

The Qingdao, a guided missile destroyer, and the refueling tanker Hongzehu are the first Chinese navy vessels to call on a US state in six years, AP said.

Such port visits dropped off after the collision of a US spy plane and a Chinese fighter jet off China’s coast in 2001. But US-China military relations have been improving recently as US leaders cautiously seek to increase exchanges and better understand China’s military as it rapidly modernizes.

Chinese sailors lined the deck as the Qingdao glided next to a Pearl Harbor pier to loud cheers from local Chinese-Americans and Chinese studying or visiting the United States.

A large red banner with the words “Promote Sino-American friendship, maintain world peace” festooned the side of the gray-hulled vessel.

“The aim of our visit is to enhance understanding, promote trust, expand cooperation and enhance friendship,” Rear Adm. Wang Fushan, the deputy commander of China’s North Sea Fleet, said upon arriving yesterday, his words translated for the crowd.

The trip marks the first visit by a Chinese warship to the US since 2000, when the Qingdao visited Pearl Harbor and Everett, Wash. In 2003, two Chinese navy vessels called on Guam, a US territory in the Western Pacific.

While in Hawaii waters, the Qingdao and the Hongzehu will practice communicating with and passing US ships. Their roughly 500 sailors will meet American sailors and have an opportunity to tour Hawaii.

On Saturday, they will leave for California to conduct an offshore search and rescue exercise with the US Navy.

US military leaders say the drills will help lay a foundation for US and Chinese sailors to communicate when their ships meet one another at sea. US leaders say this is increasingly likely given that China is building a “blue water” navy of ships capable of traveling great distances.

Four years ago, the Qingdao and an accompanying supply ship completed the Chinese navy’s first around-the-world tour. With stops from Egypt to Peru, the cruise demonstrated Beijing’s ability to send ships far beyond the coastal areas of China where its navy has traditionally operated.

US military leaders also hope the Qingdao’s visit and other US-China exchanges will give them further insight into China’s military.

Rear Adm. Townsend Alexander, Navy Region Hawaii commander, welcomed the Qingdao’s arrival.

“As we have seen with other navies throughout the world, the opportunity to interact and build friendships just helps to strengthen the bond between the countries,” Alexander said.

Ninety percent of what comes from China is useless junk that we could easily do without. What we do need, such as clothing, we can find elsewhere. Stop buying their trinkets for 90 days and they'll be begging for our ships to come back.

Most of them used to welcome U.S. warships for the money and trade openings. Hong Kong was British so it *was* an ally. The Chinese said nothing would change about Hong Kong though I found that hard to believe at the time.

It’s because this is a Chinese retaliation for either the bad toys and/or the dalai lama. They felt they wanted to make a statement and chose to do this on Thanksgiving to hit military families. It’s a pretty lousy thing to do.

But then the U.S.A. is borrowing money from China (and others). It’s quite a complicated affair.

What’s the sailing time from the South China Sea, to Taiwan?

If ever there were a post-Nixon US President, who just might actually do that — it’s W. I mean, he infuriates me about amnesty and his steadfast refusal to do anything about the two border guards rotting in prison for doing their jobs.

But I can actually see W - doing this.

Even showing up on deck himself, to hand out turkey dinners. :)

Think about the meeting with the Dalai Lama recently. It really wouldn’t be much different, were the Kitty Hawk to sail throught the Taiwan strait, and right into harbor at Jeelung.

I just checked the South China Morning Post website (HK’s major English language paper)

They’re still saying Hong Kong welcomes the Kitty Hawk, with the story that Beijing said ok.

Waiting now, for the other shoe to drop...
