Caution: Hunters at work
Human season arrives with a bang
By Howie Carr | Sunday, November 25, 2007 | http://www.bostonherald.com

Shotgun deer-hunting season begins in Massachusetts tomorrow, but it just ain’t what it used to be. The native hunter population has scattered south and north. Gun and rod clubs rank high on the moonbat hit parade. And the spread of dental insurance has reduced the number of toothless yahoos stumbling drunkenly through the woods around here every first Monday after Thanksgiving.

Still, tomorrow will not be a good day to be a cow in Massachusetts - or a stop sign. You know, you’re out drivin’ around in your pickup truck, jes’ itchin’ to pull the trigger on something - anything! - and you ain’t seen a deer in a month o’ Sundays, and you and Billy Bob jes’ keep a-poundin’ them Budweisers down, and what the Sam Hill is a body supposed to do? You gots to shoot something, even if it’s mooing.

And now they’re saying King Tut may have been killed in a hunting accident. Could they still test his blood-alcohol level after all these centuries? The word is he may have fallen from a chariot. Hunters still fall to their deaths, but usually it’s from a tree stand, the second-most-common cause of death among hunters, after being shot by a close relative.

Let’s go straight to this year’s stack of hunting accident stories.

Texas: A 35-year-old Waco man was found dead in a tree stand after dropping his deer rifle, causing the gun to fire into his chest. In addition to the nimrod’s corpse, the local paper reported that “also in the stand were several empty beer cans, including a half-empty can sitting in an insulated drink holder.”

Florida: A 31-year-old hunter was killed when he tossed a loaded 9mm handgun to a friend in the woods. The second hunter caught the gun by the trigger and it fired, sending a bullet first through the shooter’s other hand and then through his friend’s chest. Is it possible alcohol may have been involved in this misadventure?

Arkansas: A 44-year-old hunter was found dead, dangling from his tree stand. The sheriff speculated that the hunter “lost his balance.” I wonder why. The deerslayer then fell backwards with his feet stuck in the stand and “died from hanging upside down for a long period of time.” Do you suppose Bambi came along for a good laugh while the blood was rushing to his head?

How about some kinsmen killing kinsmen in the woods? These stories are filled with words like “mistook,” “distraught,” “ricocheted” and “stray bullet.”

Someday someone will research the correlation between the start of hunting season in the redneck districts and an increase in dismissal of suits involving disputed wills. It’s amazing how often two close relatives go into the woods and only one returns.

Wisconsin: A grandfather mistook his 18-year-old grandson for a deer and blasted him to kingdom come in Saxeville a week ago today.

Utah: A 9-year-old boy hunting geese with his 51-year-old uncle didn’t bag any birds, but he did manage to kill Uncle Chad when his shotgun “accidentally discharged.” This was the second fatality of the season in Utah. A 44-year-old nimrod was killed by a friend who was climbing over a fence with a rifle slung over his back. It too “accidentally” discharged.

Michigan: A 24-year-old man drilled his father in Dad’s own back yard. The lad was “looking for an animal he’d shot earlier” when his father ventured outside - not wearing anything orange. Pops never had a chance.

Connecticut: A 51-year-old Berlin deer hunter was shotgunned by his stepson.

Michigan: A man was flushing deer from hedges in order to give his son a clean shot. The son got one: He shot Dad in the hip.

New York: A 76-year-old man hunting with six relatives died after being shot in the hip. The undersheriff “could not confirm” whether the geezer was gunned down by a blood relative. No word on whether anyone in the shooting party was contesting a will.

Nebraska: A drug dealer was charged with manslaughter after shooting a hunter in front of his 15-year-old son. The drug dealer’s brother said his sibling was “trying to shoot a coyote.”

All I can say is, if you feel the call of nature tomorrow while driving to work, don’t pull over and walk into the woods - unless you’re wearing an orange blazer to your job. Otherwise, it could be the last pit stop you ever make. They’re out there!

Guess who's taking Mitt to task over a certain judicial appointment?

LACONIA, N.H. - Sensing the political kill, GOP presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani yesterday slammed former Gov. Mitt Romney over his appointment of a now-controversial Bay State judge and said his rival has an abysmal record on violent crime.

“The governor is going to have to explain his appointment, and the judge is going to have to explain her decision,” Giuliani said, speaking of Superior Court Judge Kathe M. Tuttman, a Romney selection. Tuttman freed convicted killer Daniel T. Tavares Jr. on personal recognizance July 16, and the tattooed psycho stands accused of murdering a Washington state couple one week ago.

“It’s not an isolated situation,” the GOP front-runner said, asserting that Romney has a “poor record on violent crime” and adding: “He had an increase in murder and violent crime while he was governor. So it’s not so much the isolated situation which he and the judge will have to explain.”

Giulian’s attack came despite a furious effort by the Romney camp to bottle the Tavares controversy by calling on Tuttman to quit and emphasizing that the felon threatened to kill Romney and other officials on his release from prison.

Nothing puts me in such a cheery glow on a Sunday morning as does reading about stupid hunting accidents.

Well, nothing else except tales of drunken snowmobilers being garrotted...

"the tattooed psycho"
"Jessica van Sack"

The Boston Herald makes it look easy, but a good tabloid is truly a thing of beauty.

Lyrics to Tom Lehrer's Hunting song

(Hanna Barbera's Punkin Puss, from the mid 60s. Probably not politically correct these days!)

I'd think most hunters are responsible and that the ones mentioned by Howie in today's column are simply those who link the sport of hunting with the sport of consuming Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Tune in tomorrow to hear these and more; Howie said
that “my hunting column will run the Sun. after Thanksgiving and we’ll talk about it the next day”. At least I think he
will. http://www.wrko.com and http://www.wntk.com streamcast the show (WCRN in Worcester, sadly, no longer carries it)
or tune in to WRKO or its various affiliates.

The snowmobiler tales will come in good time :)

I gotta admit, I was up in Central/SW Vermont on Labor
Day weekend and the weather and scenery were great. I
did spot some hunters (prob. responsible ones) in
West Pawlet, near the NY state line. I was up around
Rutland, Manchester, Wallingford, that general area.
Saw one house that literally coulda been a shotgun
shack (you could picture Punkin Puss and Mush Mouse
living in there)...Vermont has great scenery and
nice restaurants and hopefully can be excused for
the moonbat politicians.

Tom Bronkenjaw trashes Rush on Ingraham’s show (heard
in Boston 9-midnight on WTKK 96.9)

from http://www.newsbusters.com

“Former NBC anchor Tom Brokaw took his publicity tour for his Sixties book “Boom!” into (at least somewhat) hostile territory on Monday’s Laura Ingraham show. Ingraham played an old clip in which Brokaw slapped talk radio as “instantly jingoistic and savagely critical” of people questioning war. Like many other journalists who instantly let conservatives know they haven’t listened to Rush Limbaugh, Brokaw insisted Limbaugh “doesn’t want to hear another point of view, except his.” Ingraham disagreed. Brokaw added: “The problem with talk radio is they only want to hear one note...The problem with talk radio is they mock anyone else’s point of view, and they do it often in a mindless fashion.” This is rich talk coming from a man whose network hired Bill Moyers as his newscast’s only commentator in 1995, and a man who wrote a syrupy tribute to hot liberal mock-jock Jon Stewart for his “Athenian” ideals in Time magazine”

I kept listening to Rush, rather than thinking of listening to Laura, so I missed that hour (2-3) that had the interview on WVMT.

So, with Bozell saying Hillary hired private dicks to follow the big di, um, her husband.

Where the heck did she get the money? Embezzle from clients of the Rose Law Firm?

I did hear Laura’s interview with Brokaw on WTKK (again,
they have the show on a 12 hr delay!). He feels that
talk radio is one sided...(but as Laura pointed out,
it’s a reaction to the lib media out there—and as a caller
pointed out, hosts like Rush _ARE_ equal time!)

But—you can hear it here! Audio via http://www.newsbusters.com

not sure—possibly something on official state site. Howie mentioned the income tax abolishment one and a few others

I did just spot this:
http://davideisenthal.typepad.com/the_eisenthal_report/2007/11/2008-massachuse.html

>>November 24, 2007
2008 Massachusetts Ballot Questions

Four referendum questions have moved a step closer to being on the ballot in Massachusetts next November.

These questions would ban greyhound racing, decriminalize marijuana, repeal the state’s income tax, and repeal portions of a development law known as Chapter 40B.

Advocates of the questions needed to get at least 66,593 signatures by November 21 - an amount equal to three percent of the ballots cast in last year’s Gubernatorial election. The town and city clerks in the 351 cities and towns have until Monday, the 26th, to certify the signatures. The Secretary of State then has until Wednesday, the 28th, to accept the signatures.

If the Secretary of State determines that the questions have received sufficient signatures, the legislature then has until the first Wednesday in May to pass the questions into law. If the legislature does not enact the questions, advocates then must obtain another 11,099 signatures - 0.5 percent of the 2006 Gubernatorial ballots - by June 18 in order for the questions to appear on the November ballot.

Let me help. Here are the answers to the questions:
ban greyhound racing -— YES
decriminalize marijuana-— YES
repeal the state’s income tax-— NEVER
repeal portions of a development law
known as Chapter 40B-— Unions have not told me how to vote

There now MA voters don’t need to even vote on these.

Developers are using the 40B provisions to run roughshod over local zoning. If a city/town needs to boost their number of affordable housing units, let the municipality decide where those units should be located.

I meant some of the referendum supporters have a moonbat tinge (I reread my earlier comment) — I’m suspicious of the “open space” argument thrown in with “affordable housing.” As I understand it (and I’m in Boston, where “open space” is basically the Common and Public Gardens, etc.), localities get money from the state to preserve open space, thus reducing housing and, as a natural consequence, “affordable” housing. I say “A pox on both their houses!”
