DE PALMA IRAQ FLICK BOMBS ("Redacted" grosses $26k in opening weekend!)
NY Post ^ | 11/25/07 | Page 6 Richard Johnson

IT'S hard for Hollywood pacifists like Brian De Palma to capture the hearts and minds of America if Americans won't see their movies.

While the public is staying away in droves from “Rendition," “Lions for Lambs" and “In the Valley of Elah," audiences are really avoiding “Redacted," De Palma's picture about US soldiers who rape a 14-year-old Iraqi girl, then kill her and her family.

which “could be the worst movie I've ever seen," said critic Michael Medved -took in just $25,628 in its opening weekend in 15 theaters,

HAHAHAHA! Man! That really IS bad!

That is 1,708.00 per theater. Shoot, the popcorn cost more that that!

"De Palma's picture about US soldiers who rape a 14-year-old Iraqi girl, then kill her and her family...."

Well gee whiz... that just sounds like so much family fun and entertainment this Thanksgiving weekend. How about De Palma do a movie about a big time HOLLYWOOD record executive who lures a waitress/actress home to his mansion and then blows her face off point blank with a gun!

Makes you wonder about the validity of all these "polls" about opinions on the war the media is circulating.

What is reassuring to me is that either even the libs aren't flocking to see them either or there aren't nearly as many libs as we've been led to believe, what with all the dead, illegals and multiple-vote voters swelling the numbers in past elections.

If we can truly cut down on voter fraud, we just may find that this country isn't nearly as "50-50" as we have thought.

Apparently not. The story says Mark Cuban (leftist wacko owner of the Dallas Mavericks) offered to sell the movie to De Palma at cost. De Palma was not dumb enough to take the offer.

[snip] took in just $25,628 in its opening weekend in 15 theaters, which means roughly 3,000 people saw it in the entire country.

[snip] The message movie was produced by NBA Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who insisted on deleting grisly images of Iraqi war casualties from the montage at the film's end. Cuban offered to sell the film back to De Palma at cost, but the director was too smart to go for that deal.

Yes, it's probably a "limited opening".
But I had to double-check the article just to be sure there wasn't
some "decimal-point error"!

Well Done, DePalma and Mark Cuban!
As for Mr. Cuban, I guess it's not just OLD fools that are parted
from their money.

Good!

Now the more important question is, how did “Enchanted” do?

We’ve seen it twice. It’s marvelous. And actually with the amount of money we have spent on Enchanted and Hairspray merchandise, I feel I am putting James Marsden’s kids through college. Mine own won’t go, but who needs a cap and a gown when you’re the Nicest Kids in Town.

If the counts are good, someone else can cover his pay for a while.

Oh my Goodness! I just saw your post!!!!!!!

My girls and I are jumping up and down (hoping not to wake up my poor hubby)

YES!!!!

But Disney dropped the ball on the merchandise. My older daughter is jumping out of her skin. All she wants for Christmas is a Pip plush and I want a Prince Edward. In fact two. One to remake into Corny Collins for our Hairspray collection. Ken can lend him a suit.

War film’s portrayal of soldiers draws fire from GOP lawmaker

The ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee sent a letter to the chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America yesterday calling the new Iraq war film “Redacted” shameful in its view of U.S. soldiers.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, California Republican, sent a scathing letter regarding Brian De Palma’s new film to MPAA Chairman Dan Glickman asking that he not forget that there are heroes who have sacrificed their lives for the United States and Iraqi people.

“Unfortunately, Brian De Palma’s new movie ‘Redacted,’ which opened in several theaters this week, portrays American service personnel in Iraq as uncontrollable misfits and criminals,” Mr. Hunter stated in his letter to Mr. Glickman. “While incidents of criminal behavior by members of our military should never be ignored, the isolated incident on which this film is based negatively portrays American service personnel and misrepresents their collective efforts in Iraq.”

Other military officials worry that the film could be used as propaganda against troops in the region and incite violence against them by Islamist group.....

“This incident, while tragic, demonstrates the goodness and generosity of our nation’s military, and its continued mission in Iraq,” Mr. Hunter said, reminding Mr. Glickman and Mr. De Palma of the continuing sacrifices U.S. troops have made.

“The film intentionally fails to show or give any indication of the more than 3 million inoculations administered by American forces, the construction of medical clinics and schools, as well as the construction of other important infrastructure,” the letter went on to state. “Additionally, the film’s negative depiction of our military blatantly ignores the many acts of heroism performed by our soldiers, Marines, airmen and sailors in Iraq.”

In fact, the past several years I just TIVO it and fast forward to the big awards. I just can’t stand these people fawning all over each other...now they congratulate each other for how political astute they are....oy.

Actually, I think there are two operative words here: Foreign Distribution. "Redacted" will be put into foreign distibution for all the "hate America" crowd worldwide. It will be used to ideologically recruit terrorists. That's the real danger of this piece of crap.

I've heard these films aren't doing well abroad, either. Movies usually need some US buzz to do well overseas. And who will watch this junk on TV? They can show it 24 hours a day but no one will watch it.
