Video of Huckabee Calling for Scholarships and In-State Tuition for Illegal Aliens (2005)
Arkansas Journal ^ | November 25, 2007 | Henry Rearden

Posted on 11/25/2007 9:12:50 PM PST by RebekahT

Huckabee announces his desire to give scholarships to illegal aliens in his January 11, 2005 State of the State address. Huckabee doesn't say "illegal aliens". He uses the word "status". But a newspaper account makes clear his intentions, "Illegal aliens would be eligible for state taxpayer-funded college scholarships and in-state college tuition rates under a bill that was endorsed by a committee of the Arkansas House of Representatives on Tuesday. House Bill 1525 by Rep. Joyce Elliott, D-Little Rock, is part of Gov. Mike Huckabee’s legislative package. It easily won favor in the House Education Committee, of which Elliott is chairman." (Arkansas Democrat-Gazette 2/23/2005)

Rep. Joyce Elliott, D-Little Rock, said she had already planned to file a bill granting instate status to the children of immigrants who live in Arkansas and have applied to state universities. "It’s nice to know we will have an ally in the governor’s office." (Arkansas Democrat-Gazette 1/12/05)

Here's another newspaper account, "Gov. Mike Huckabee, who included the bill in his legislative package, drew a contrast between Wednesday's vote in support of illegal immigrants and the state's handling of the 1957 desegregation of Little Rock's Central High School. "They took a stand that Arkansas can be proud of,"Huckabee said in describing the House. "I think if we had taken a similar one in 1957, it would have made us proud for a long, long time."" (Arkansas Democrat-Gazette 2/24/2005)

Yet another one of Huckabee's flip-flops... Clink on the link to check out a video of Huckabee, on the floor of the Arkansas legislature back in 2005 insisting that children of illegals should get scholarships and in-state tuition.

This is the Mike Huckabee that Arkansans know - which is probably one of the greatest reasons he's polling at 8% in his home state.

Huckabee is a pro-life, Southern Baptist socialist. On most issues, he’s more in line with Hillary than any conservative in America.

I’m just hoping that actual proof - like this video - will expose his record to any conservative who has been swayed by his smooth demeanor and touching speeches.

Has he really flip-flopped on this issue? I thought he was still in favor of states being allowed to offer illegal immigrant children who were applying for citizenship to get in-state tuition. Maybe not though if you have to open it up to everybody.

I meant that Huckabee is trying to come across as strong on the illegal immigration issue now that he’s realized that he needs the conservative base’s support in order to win the nomination. He’s running from his record while governor of Arkansas for 10 years because his record was everything but conservative on most issues, including illegal aliens.

Give me Giuliani, Huckabee, Ron Paul, a chainsaw, and some industrial glue; and I will make you one good republican nominee amd two democrat ones. Sadly we dont have an all around conservative that can win. Thompson comes the closest.

My biggest fear is that Thompson, Huckabee, and Romney will split the evangelical vote letting Rudy slide into the general election.

"This is the Mike Huckabee that Arkansans know - which is probably one of the greatest reasons he's polling at 8% in his home state."

The misleading 8% figure in the Arkansas Poll was for a mythical general election with all of the candidates running, without a primary -

If the 2008 presidential election were held today, who would you vote for for president? Just tell me the name.

Hillary Clinton - 35%
Rudy Giuliani - 8%
Mike Huckabee - 8%
Fred Thompson - 8%
Barak Obama - 5%
Other - 11%
don'know/refused - 28%

Real elections don't work this way. These figures do not accurately project the results of a primary and a general election. The pollsters did not even separate the 11% "Other" into Democrats and Republicans.

The only conclusion I can draw from the poll is that Giuliani, Huckabee and Thompson are in a close race here.

If Huckabee does well in January, I predict he will win a lot more than 8% of the vote in the Arkansas. His prospects in Arkansas are quite good, actually. In a Huckabee vs. Hillary race, I believe Huckabee would win in Arkansas.

One other thing about this "Arkansas Poll" you are citing -

It's sponsored by the "The Diane D. Blair Center of Southern Politics and Society".

As you probably know, Diane Blair and Hillary Clinton were best friends. Bill Clinton appointed her chairman of the board at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which controls PBS and NPR.

It's reasonable to suspect that the Clintons are manipulating some of the polls, especially the CNN poll and the Arkansas Poll which are controlled by long-time Clinton supporters.

Huckabee Right About Children Left in Lurch
The Morning News | August 12, 2005

Gov. Mike Huckabee has a definite flair for infuriating people by refusing to adhere to a rigid party line.

That's one of the things we appreciate most about him, although we still have our disagreements.

This talent was most recently displayed when Huckabee weighed in on the recent immigration raid on an Arkadelphia poultry plant.

The raid netted 119 people who were working at the plant and had bought fake IDs from a former worker. Most, if not all, of those arrested in the raid have since been deported.

In a simplistic world of bumper-sticker politics the arrest and deportation of 119 illegal immigrants would be non-controversial. No one -- including the governor -- endorses law-breaking.

But in the real world there are all too often complications. There are added considerations that go beyond the simple formula of "They broke the law so they should be arrested and deported."

In this case there were some 30 complications. About 30 children were left in limbo when one or both of their parents were arrested without warning and removed from the country.

Huckabee thought those children, some of whom are U.S. citizens by birth, deserved more consideration. He went beyond just saying so and directed the state Health Department and the Department of Human Services to provide whatever assistance they can to these children. Huckabee also released $1,000 from his emergency fund to buy food, clothing and even school supplies for the children.

That brought the wrath of the righteous down on the governor. Jim Harris, a spokesman for Huckabee, said the office has been getting calls from as far away as California from people irate over the governor's supposed coddling of illegal residents.

But that's not what this is about. Huckabee has never suggested that those 119 people shouldn't have been arrested and dealt with according to the law. What he has said, and we agree with him here, is that the arrests and deportations could have been better coordinated between federal, state and local agencies and that the interests of the children could and should have been taken into account. There was no urgency, nothing to justify separating these families this way. That's what this is about and to his credit that's what Huckabee, and not his cranky callers, understands.

“There are added considerations that go beyond the simple formula of “They broke the law so they should be arrested and deported.” “

This is the thin end of the wedge that the “enlightened” use in most every situation to foist their policies upon an unsuspecting and gullible public. It’s for the children, naturally.

Public policy, once subjugated to personal private (And in some cases religious) ethics, rapidly degenerates into a toxic brew of government mandated altruism and preening savior demagogues. Being the adult is never easy, but it is necessary.

NO MORE “COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATIVES”. NO MORE LIBERALS DRESSED UP IN PSEUDO FISICAL RESPONSIBILITY.

"Pretty soon, Southern white guys like me may be in the minority," Huckabee said jokingly as the crowd roared in laughter.

Huckabee promotes 'open door' policy at LULAC convention

Thursday, Jun 30, 2005

By Wesley Brown

Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK - In a impassioned speech before hundreds of influential Hispanic civil rights leaders from across the nation, Gov. Mike Huckabee told a captive audience Wednesday that America is great because it has always opened it doors up to people seeking a better way of life.

"I would hope that no matter who we are, or where we are from, that America should always be a place that opens its arms, opens it heart, opens its spirit to people who come because they want the best for their families ...," Huckabee said as the largely Hispanic audience gave him a standing ovation.

Huckabee was the keynote speaker, along with Tyson Foods Inc. Chairman and CEO John Tyson, at a noon luncheon of the League of United Latin American Citizens, which is holding its 76th annual convention in Little Rock.

About 10,000 political, community and business leaders, along with exhibitors and speakers are in Little Rock attending the convention at the Statehouse Convention Center. The convention started Monday and runs through Saturday.

Although he never actually talked about the U.S. or Arkansas immigration policy, Huckabee made it very clear where he stood on the issue. In his opening remarks, he said the nation will need to address the concerns of the Hispanic community because of its growing influence and population base.

"Pretty soon, Southern white guys like me may be in the minority," Huckabee said jokingly as the crowd roared in laughter.

He told the LULAC delegates that their presence in the state's capital city was very important because Arkansas has one of the fastest growing Hispanic populations in the nation. "Your gathering is so very significant for our state," Huckabee said. "We are delighted to have you."

Despite several light moments, Huckabee did not stray away from several controversial issues that made him a target of criticism during the recently ended 85th General Assembly. He said Arkansas needs to make the transition from a traditional Southern state to one that recognizes and cherishes diversity "in culture, in language and in population."

"This is an issue that is going to require extraordinary efforts on both sides of the border, particularly those coming from Mexico," Huckabee said of verifying the status of illegal aliens. "But I am confident that our government will recognize that we should accommodate people who wish to provide the best opportunities for their families (and) employers so that we can make sure our economy has the necessary work force."

During the legislation session, Huckabee criticized an immigration bill by Republican senators Jim Holt of Springdale and Denny Altes of Fort Smith as un-Christian, un-American, irresponsible and anti-life. Senate Bill 206, which died in the Senate, would have required proof of citizenship to register to vote and also force state agencies to report suspected cases of people living in the country illegally. Holt, R-Springdale, replied later to Huckabee's comments that Christian charity does not include turning a blind eye to lawbreaking.

TRANSCRIPT OF VIDEO:

I’m also going to ask that we open financial aid for any student graduating from a high school in Arkansas. There’s something terribly unjust about a kid whose family came here looking for opportunity and that kid maybe has come, at the age of four, as happened in a school in El Dorado. And that student of hispanic descent, spent his entire career as a student in Arkansas public schools, from the age of four. Graduated from high school, one of the top kids in his class, but when he applied for financial aid, he wasn’t eligible for the various scholarships or grants because of his status — a status that he had no decision in and no control over.

Do we want to change fhe future for those kids? Then let’s give them the opportunity. Let’s not say that our doors are open but our opportunities are closed. Let’s open both our doors and our opportunities and create a whole new generation of kids who have the opportunity to be prosperous and to bring to their families a hope that they came here for.

Let’s open both our doors and our opportunities and create a whole new generation of kids who have the opportunity to be prosperous and to bring to their families a hope that they came here for.’

Do I want to change the future for those kids? Not at the price of the sovereignty of the United States !!!

As someone said a couple days ago, if the Mexicans want to take over a government and change their status, let them take over THEIR OWN GOV’T IN MEXICO and change their status THERE.
