A British primary school teacher arrested in Sudan faces up to 40 lashes for blasphemy after letting her class of 7-year-olds name a teddy bear Muhammad. Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, was arrested at at Khartoum's Unity High School yesterday, and accused of insulting the Prophet of Islam. Her colleagues said that they feared for her safety after reports that groups of young men had gathered outside the Khartoum police station where she was taken and were shouting death threats. The Unity school is a Christian-run but multi-racial and co-educational private school that is popular with Sudanese professionals and expatriate workers. Bishop Ezekiel Kondo, chairman of the school council, told The Times that the school was in dispute with authorities over taxes, and suggested that Gibbons, who arrived in Khartoum in August, may have been caught up in that. "The thing may be very simple but there are people who are trying to make it bigger. It's a kind of blackmail," he said. Teachers at the school, in central Khartoum, a mile from the Nile River, said that Gibbons had made an innocent mistake by letting her pupils choose their favorite name for the toy as part of a school project. Robert Boulos, the Unity director, said Gibbons was following a British National Curriculum course designed to teach young pupils about animals and their habitats. This year’s animal was the bear. In September, she asked a girl to bring in her teddy bear to help the class focus and then asked the children to name the toy. “They came up with eight names including Abdullah, Hassan and Muhammad. Then she explained what it meant to vote and asked them to choose the name,” Boulos said. Twenty out of the 23 children chose Muhammad.

That’s funny... if you have a teddy bear named Muhammad you are insulting islam.... but if you are a guy whose actual name is Muhammad, and you strap on a suicide vest and commit mass murder, then you are glorifying islam.

These people want the jobs; they want the luxury, the technology, medicine, they even like the plush green land you live on, they just don’t like you or your Christian beliefs.
They despise your history, they see their race as superior (The Arab is largely racist), they are intolerant of any religion other than theirs, they see Western women as dirty and loose etc etc etc. However, none of this changes the fact that there are good jobs in the US, Europe and Israel, right?
Believe it or not, what is actually happening is that the same issues Israel has faced is spreading westward into Europe and even North America. As the populations of Muslims grows in the West, so do the problems; just as the Isreali's have been experiencing for years. Ask France, ask Great Britain, ask the Netherlands how this works. Many are simply denying the reality that not all cultures are egalitarian and inclusive as we are. The Muslim culture is one of repressions and destruction of anything that is not Islamic. It is a world solely organized around religion, where a Ayatollah, Mufti, Imam have the power; unlike the West where religion is a moral compass but not the sole means of societal organization where economics and political institutions serve that end. Eventually people in the West will figure that out; one way or the other.

I suspect there is *some* ulterior motive, seeing as Mohammed is by far the most common boy's name in the Muslim world, similar to naming a teddy bear "John" in the U.S.
I named my teddy bear George when I was a kid.
Maybe she has a vocation. Not a term you often hear these days - but I know those who do, none of them are stupid, and all have my respect.

This poor teacher will probably go home,( if she survives) thinking somehow Bush made the Sudanese government so unreasonable. She may even convert to Islam if she isn't already.
