Call NC’s Senators and reps where Le June is also. The Red Cross is a good starting point, but they can only push so far. If the military is FUBARing this up, then up the chain is the only way to go. Have you tried calling the CO of Camp Le June?? I pray your son is giving leave to say good-bye. Its the least that could be done for him..considering the sacrifices you and your family are making for this country. You, your son, and family are in my prayers..And Thank you for what your family has done to serve this country. God Bless!!

My eldest son called the Red Cross for funeral leave for his brother with the Army at Fort Huachuca to attend his grandmother's funeral (my mother) and leave was granted without a hitch. Attendance at bed-side may the distinguishing issue.

If you have spoken with the Red Cross, I would call back and see if they can give you a "case number" or some other distinguishing identifier and then call the Base Commander's office and ask how to proceed with having his office look into granting the leave. Dr. R's phone number he posted at number twenty is also a good source, but it always helps to be able to cite the Red Cross request already made and a case number or contact person may help them find out who they are being asked to overule and why.

Oh I wish you the best of luck here! I can sincerely relate, my cousin was disallowed by the Air Force from attending our grandmother’s funeral 15 years ago as a pallbearer. As a result I had to shoulder that load with 5 much younger boys, most unrelated. 4 years later the same Air Force (under CLinton) failed to secure their base in Saudi Arabia from terrorist attack, and he was dead too, one of 19 Americans who died and one of two officers I believe. The military brass and beurocracy should support the families who support them. And they must protect their own!

I hope this helps -
Milpersman Section 1050-130 6.a.3 states:
In Loco Parentis is defined as a person who stood in place of the parent 24 hours a day for at least 5 years before the service member turned 21 or entered the service.

If this defines your situation:
Write a brief statement indicating that the ill lady meets this definition - include the applicable dates of service 'In Loco Parentis' - and get this letter counter signed by an independant witness who can attest to the 'loco parentis' declaration. Get BOTH signatures notarized.

Then:
Get a letter from the attending physician indicating that his presence would contribute to the welfare of the ill lady. (This, unfortunately is a key item. If his presence would not so contribute as certified by the attending physician then leave cannot be granted unless the lady paseses.)

Then:
Contact your local chapter of the American Red Cross, and obtain a short letter indicating that they have verified the situation.

Then:
Send a copy to your son via regular mail AND send copies to the Command OMBUDSMAN.

Then:
Pray.

.

Please be aware that it is possible that leave may not be granted prior to her passing. This would be neither a misinterpretation of the regulations nor an abuse of power. The final decision always rests with the commanding officer. Contacting your elected representatives will be neither helpful nor effective as they have no jurisdiction in this matter and can only serve to interfere in ongoing operations and the authority of the CO.

How do I know all this?
Former Naval Officer, former Command Legal Officer, former Command Administrative and Personnel Officer.

to go out on a training excerise tomorrow on ship

pre-deployment exercises? They are next to impossible to get out of (for good reason), and (I say this with the utmost respect and delicacy) she will likely have to die before the USMC lets him out of a deployment.

First step should be to contact your congressman and senators.

Has your son gone to his Commanding Officer and requested leave?? As a CO many years ago that would be a no brainer and we would have had your son on his way in a few hours....probably with emergency pay in his pocket if requested. All this talk of calling congress critters does nothing but muck up the process.

MarineMom613,

You may also want to get the Command Segeant Major’s phone number and call him/her and ask for assistance through the NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer) chain. Sometimes NCOs can get things done around the regulations.

Failing that, call your Congressman/Congresswoman, as well as your two (arrrg!) Senators offices to ask for assistance, as well send them emails. The one thing the military cringes at is having a Conressional/Senate inquiry made.

Hijinx,

What think you?

He is in Camp Lejuene, NC and is scheduled to go out on a training excerise tomorrow on ship.

Even if the military are denying emergency leave status, since he is in country at Camp Lejuene, he should be able to take ordinary leave.
