Chavez: "Laser sniper tried to kill me"

Chavez reiterates that 'everything indicates they're trying to kill me'

The president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, reiterated today that, again, his most radical opponents have reactivated their assasination plans against him and 'everything indicates that they will be trying to kill me because of what will happen on Sunday'.

Next Sunday, Venezuelans will vote on a constitutional reform with which Chavez intends to install a 'socialism of the 21st century', which his opponents means the installation of a personal dictatorship.

~ snip ~

In the [campaign] event, he repeated that recently "a strange light traveled through my body, around here, where my heart is, and then around here", he said while pointing to his head.

"Most likely it was a sniper hiding 100 or 200 meters away in a Caracas building, who aimed a weapon equiped with telescopic sight guided by rays, of which he was alerted to by a TV viewer who immediately alerted the authorities".

His Cuban colleague, Fidel Castro, to whom he said he showed the video when he visited Havana, "told me it was a sniper who didn't fire because he could have gotten cold feet at the precise moment".

~ snip ~

Chavez concluded his story by singing a Mexican ranchera song, which chorus goes like this: "I fell from a cloud at 20 meters high, and that was my great adventure"

More fun (in Spanish) at source.

I find it even harder to imagine that a professional sniper would ever consider using a laser.

Quite. Lasers are good for quick acquisition in close quarters. Not useful at distant targets because bullets don't follow long straight lines. A sniper would use a regular optical scope. And they don't get cold feet. :-)

They show that laser dot in movies all the time though, 'cuz it shows up nice on screen and makes for better drama.

Maybe Mahmoud Ahmanajihad was having an out-of-body experience and buzzed his pal Hugo.

200 meters? Give any hunter a good enough rifle with a scope and they will make that shot, no laser needed.

Dr. Evil: You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads! Now evidently my cycloptic colleague informs me that that cannot be done. Ah, would you remind me what I pay you people for, honestly? Throw me a bone here! What do we have?
Number Two: Sea Bass.
Dr. Evil: [pause] Right.
Number Two: They're mutated sea bass.
Dr. Evil: Are they ill tempered?
Number Two: Absolutely.
Dr. Evil: Oh well, that's a start.

Chavez is too valuable as a counter example for anyone to think about shooting him...

"A sniper would use a regular optical scope. And they don't get cold feet. :-)"

Also a rangefinder and a laptop. Muzzle velocity, weight, distance and prevailing wind direction/speed are plugged into the laptop. You are told how far off-target to aim at that very long distance, over 2-3k feet. There are several trig and physics equations combined into a single algorithm program that solves the variables. It takes 2 people. And you can't buy it.

We met these guys in the Mojave desert about 5 years ago using it. Clearly military guys from the AFB 15 mi away. Just nicknames used. I was out then. That .50 set up for that task was impressive. That big scope was impressively boresighted. I shot it on direction from the spotter. Not bad off 6" from 2200'.

I only got to shoot after telling them specific places I was while in. And descriptions of where I was while in. I told them not to tell me what they do, since I dont have that attachment to my clearance. Those guys were not of low rank for the Commander to allow them to borrow the gear for practice in that desert. We never saw them 5 years ago:) And we never met them after saying goodbye in that desert, and we didn't see anybody else around while we were there:)

They had the best stuff, though!

Chavez is crazy because he’s a DUmmie. Sorry, I didn’t have time to quote to make it have context.

He’s hallucinating, just like Ahmawhackjob in front of the UN who later babbled about his Satanic visions while addressing the world’s diplomats.

Proposed plan to destabilize Chavez.

(and I do mean, destabilize)

We airdrop about 10,000 $5 laser pointers over Caracas, focusing on areas where Chavez is not popular.

That’s it. He’ll go nuts.

I can’t believe that nobody’s suggested this (unless I missed it):

According to a headline on Drudge the other day polling in Venezuela indicated that he’s losing support and the referendum is not going to pass (that was when he said anyone who doesn’t vote yes is a traitor). This is an excuse to pull a Musharraf and declare a state of emergency. He can do it before the election and simply not hold the vote until he can rig it or, if he loses, he can simply fake an assassination attempt and then declare the emergency and never leave office.
