Romney mailing goes after rivals on gay marriage
The Boston Globe ^ | November 27, 2007 | Foon Rhee and Michael Levenson

Posted on 11/27/2007 10:47:27 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

The colorful brochure from Mitt Romney's presidential campaign looks like many of the political fliers flooding Iowa mail boxes this time of the year.

But there is a difference. The piece is Romney's first to single out his rivals by name, a shift that shows him becoming more aggressive in the final weeks before the Jan. 3 caucuses.

The mailing juxtaposes photos and quotes from Romney showing his support for a federal constitutional amendment to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman with photos and quotes showing Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, and Fred Thompson all oppose such a measure.

But it makes no mention of Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and Baptist preacher whose website says he has consistently supported a federal marriage amendment and led successful efforts to pass such an amendment at the state level in 2002. Huckabee has surged from the back of the pack to a virtual tie with Romney for first place in the Iowa polls.

Kevin Madden, a Romney spokesman, said today that the mailing was designed to contrast Romney with other candidates who are leading in the national polls -- a group that does not include Huckabee.

The Giuliani campaign, which has been feuding with Romney's camp, harshly criticized the brochure, which was apparently the first by any of the Republican candidates to directly go after a rival in Iowa.(continued)

You know, if being against homosexual marriage is one of your largest reasons for going to cacauses in January, you won’t be voting for Romney. Too many question marks there on other social issues to separate from this. In a strange way, by pointing out Fred, Rudy and McCain’s shortcomings, he is helping Huckabee. Not a good move on his part. I would think his campaign would accentuating his ability to be a “problem-solver” as a business executive and so forth (although, the big dig fiasco may undermine that effort as well).

Mitt seems to be all packaging, no substance.

It’s tactic number one in the ‘toons’ playbook: attack others most strongly on the very issues where you yourself are vulnerable. It’s clever, but intellectually dishonest. Romney does this all the time — it’s one of the reasons I’ve come to truly dislike him as a candidate.

Yes indeed, Mitt has "never been for" Gay Rights in exactly the same way Rudy Giuliani has "never been for" restrictions on handgun ownership.

Homosexual "Rights"

Gov. Romney has a long history of promoting and furthering the homosexual agenda, and working closely with leading gay activists

Romney twice sought and received the endorsement of the homosexual Log Cabin Republican Club

Romney's campaign distributed pro-gay rights campaign literature during Boston's "Gay Pride" events

Romney supports homosexual "anti-discrimination" laws

Such laws are usually carried out at the expense of freedom of religion and speech. For example, they would allow lawsuits against a Christian book store owner for refusing to hire a homosexual activist applicant.

Romney advocates homosexual couples' adoption rights be recognized by the government

Romney supports homosexual domestic partnerships

Romney supported and promoted legalizing homosexual civil unions

Romney Opposes the Boy Scouts' Ban on Homosexual Scoutmasters

Romney barred Boy Scouts from public participation in 2002 Olympics

Homosexual activism in government

Romney appointed prominent homosexuals to key positions in his administration

Romney appointed prominent homosexual activists and Democrats as judges

Romney Rewards one of the State's Leading Anti-Marriage Attorneys by Making him a Judge

Romney announces he won't fill judicial vacancies before term ends

Romney's Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth used huge taxpayer funding to promote homosexuality in the public schools

Romney's Commission organized public gay "Youth Pride Day" parades and "transgender proms" which promote unhealthy and risky behavior

Romney issues a proclamation celebrating gay "Youth Pride Day"

Romney's Department of Education promotes the homosexual agenda

Romney's Department of Public Health (DPH) cooperates with the homosexual activist movement

Romney opposed federal legislation that would stop public schools from promoting homosexuality

Romney's Dept. of Social Services honors homosexual "married" couple as adoptive "Parents of the Year"

Homosexual "Marriage"

Romney refused to endorse the original 2002 Mass. constitutional amendment absolutely defining marriage as one man and one women

Romney unnecessarily (and unconstitutionally) implemented homosexual marriages in Massachusetts

Romney had marriage licenses changed to allow same-sex marriages

Romney administration ordered Justices of Peace to perform homosexual "marriages" when asked - or be fired!

Romney administration's training of Town Clerks (on how to issue same-sex marriage licenses) states that marriage statutes were not changed

Romney signs bill eliminating Sexual Transmitted Disease (STD) testing requirement for marriage

When requested of him, Romney personally issues special one-day certificates to allow otherwise unqualified people to perform homosexual "marriages"

Was Romney's public opposition to homosexual "marriage" based on expediency, not principle?

Folks need to remember that some of this stuff was as recent as LAST YEAR.

The Massachusetts Department of Social Services (DSS), run by the Romney administration, honored a homosexual "married" couple (two men) as their adoptive "Parents of the Year" for 2006. The DSS has gained a reputation for being aggressively pro-homosexual over recent years. This incident sparked outrage across the country, but to our knowledge no policies or personnel at DSS were changed as a result. - Waltham Daily News Tribune, 8/4/2006

Mitt Romney, and his paid hacks, have no shame and no scruples.

If Republicans have so little discernment that they allow Romney’s attempted leveraged buyout of the GOP to succeed, they deserve to lose, and they deserve to have happen to the national party what happened to the MA Republican Party as it was immolated on the altar of Mitt’s raging ambition.

Romney’s dismal record as the Republican leader in Massachusetts

Romney pledged to build the Massachusetts Republican Party, but in fact he did almost nothing. During his tenure there were two elections for the entire Legislature (2004 and 2006). In each election the Republicans lost seats. Republicans now hold the fewest seats in the Legislature since the Civil War.

During the four years of Romney’s tenure, the number of registered Republicans in Massachusetts fell by 31,000. During that same period, the Massachusetts Democratic Party gained 30,000.
- Boston Globe 11/2/2006

In the 2006 elections, most offices were not even challenged by Republican candidates. In the November general election for the six statewide Massachusetts constitutional offices there were more Green-Rainbow Party candidates on the ballot than Republicans!

The party’s slide has been so precipitous that Republicans yesterday did not contest 130 of 200 legislative seats, fielded a challenger in only three of 10 congressional districts, and put up fewer candidates for statewide office (three) than the Green-Rainbow Party (four).
- Boston Globe, 11/8/2006

In 2006, while Romney was chairman of the National Republican Governors Association - a group dedicated to electing more Republican governors - his own hand-picked Republican successor as governor lost badly to the Democrat, despite the fact that Republicans have held the governorship in Massachusetts since 1990. Romney largely ignored the Massachusetts elections and spent most of the time during the campaign out of state building his presidential campaign. He came back and publicly campaigned for the Republican candidate the day before the general election!

“Locally, this is a rebuke to Mitt Romney and checking out within six months after being elected and having accomplished almost nothing,” said [Jim] Rappaport [former chairman of the state Republican Party].
- Boston Globe, 11/8/2006

“Romney arrived on the scene with great promise, but is leaving the Republican Party here in shambles. Not only are the Republicans yielding the governor’s office for the first time in 16 years, but registered Republicans have fallen by 31,000 since Romney took office, and their legislative presence is at historic lows. But it worked out fine for him: He is now chasing the prize he really covets, the presidency.”
- Boston Globe 11/8/2006

“The Massachusetts Republican Party died last Tuesday. The cause of death: failed leadership. The party is survived by a few leftover legislators and a handful of county officials and grassroots activists who have been ignored for years. Services will be public and a mass exodus of taxpayers will follow. In lieu of flowers, send messages to New Hampshire Republican voters warning them about a certain presidential candidate named Romney.”
- Boston Herald, 11/12/2006

So, Romney who opposed such an amendment in his own state is now bashing others for not supporting it on the federal level. Sorry Mitt, you were either lying now, or you were lying then. Either way, you’re a liar, and not a very good one at that.

Romney to limit gay panel activities Is upset that his name is used to tout parade
By Andrea Estes, Globe Staff | May 12, 2006

Angered that his name appeared on a press release touting a gay pride parade, Governor Mitt Romney moved yesterday to curtail the activities of a 14-year-old advisory commission on gay and lesbian youth.

The commission chairwoman, Kathleen M. Henry, said she was called yesterday by Beth Myers, the governor's chief of staff, who told her that the governor planned to issue an executive order ''revoking our existence" and creating another youth commission whose purview would be all of the state's youth, not just gays and lesbians. The commission would have all new members, she said.

But a few hours later, Myers called again, Henry said, and said the governor had switched course.

''He changed his mind," said Henry, who heads a 14-member panel. ''We inundated them with outrage. It just plumed everywhere." Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom insisted that the governor's office received no such calls from gay rights activists, but opted against abolishing the commission because ''the governor thought that was too harsh."

''Instead, we're directing the commission not to use taxpayer money for parades and parties and to refocus their resources on counseling and the development of strategies for the prevention of violence and suicide," Fehrnstrom said. ''That is in keeping with the original mission of the commission."

Commission backers insisted that Romney's ban on use of taxpayer money for parades was hollow because private money pays for those events.

The commission was created by Governor William Weld(Weld backs Mitt) in 1992 to help gay and lesbian youths in school, where they face increased risk of victimization, harassment, and discrimination. The commission's work focuses primarily on violence and suicide prevention. A youth committee also organizes an annual youth pride parade. The 12th annual parade will take place tomorrow.

Administration sources said Romney's aides were angered by an ''unauthorized" news release issued by the commission March 27 announcing this weekend's Youth Pride parade. The release, which described the celebration of ''gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth and their supporters," went out on official state stationery, with the names of Romney and Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey appearing with the names of the commission chairwoman and vice chair.

Conservative activist Brian Camenker said he met with Romney aides last week, showing them photos from last year's parade, and urged them to abolish the panel.

''Last year [at the parade] they had boys in fishnet stockings and high heels parading down Boylston Street," Camenker said. ''They had boys dressed as women embracing. We presented stuff, and they were visibly sickened by what they saw. I said, basically, this group has to go. It's so manifestly destructive to kids that you have to get rid of it. They said they'd do something."

Allowing the commission to remain in existence demonstrates ''pure cowardice on the governor's part," he said. ''This shows that Romney probably doesn't have what it takes to run the country if he can't even make a decision about this."

Yup, and it also maybe his undoing.

He has spent everything he has gotten from supporters plus and equal amount of his own money on just these first few states.

What will he do after that? The only way he places is by saturating the market, not because of his ideas and such. There are another 45+ states to go.

Does he keep using his own cash, and if so, how will that play to the masses. Will it be seen as a rich man trying to buy the highest office in the land?

Will he be willing to squander his fortune on a potentially futile effort? If so, what does it say about his ability to manage finical dealings.

All very interesting.

Yes, but this is aimed towards undecideds who may, when voting for their nominee, find that this brochure is the only thing that stands out in their minds...

I’m going to say something heretical here : I’m glad this has been such a long campaign season. Who the candidates really are is starting to come out, and the luster is fading fast. There was a time Romney really wowed me. Now I think he’s a con-man angling more for post-presidency prestige than an actual desire to lead this nation.
