Voters in Virginia's Feb. 12 Republican presidential primary will have to sign an oath swearing loyalty to the eventual GOP ticket.
The State Board of Elections on Monday approved a state Republican Party request that all who apply for a GOP primary ballot first vow in writing to vote for the Republican presidential nominee next fall.

There is no practical way to enforce the GOP covenant in the constitutionally guaranteed secrecy of the voting booth. Yet the oath is a concept Virginia's GOP has considered for years.
Voters in Virginia do not register by party. Since the mid-90s, the state's Republicans have fretted that Democrats might meddle in their primaries, which are open to all registered voters.
Virginia Democrats require no oath for their presidential primary, which will be held the same day.
In the General Assembly, Republicans have pushed legislation to require party registration. At the same time, they have battled, with mixed results, in court against the open primary law.
In October, a federal appeals court ruled that a state law that gives incumbent elected officials seeking re-election the right to demand that the nomination be decided in a primary unconstitutionally forces Republicans to open their nomination process to others.

I doubt it. It’s likely more about trying to strongarm folks into supporting Rudy911, even if they can’t stand him.
Gee... what might they be afraid of?
No, this is to scare off the democrats who want to infiltrate and derail the GOP primary.
I am so sure we would disagree on so many things ....
but Stopping Rudy sure is a Uniting Cause...
Either that or supporters of conservatives who they fear will go third party if Rudy or Mitt win the nomination.

Hey, as long as you agree that Rudy911 is the greatest threat to Conservatism in our lifetimes - and that the Tennessee Titans are your favorite NFL team - we’ll get along fine.
;-)
I think VA should do away with the open primary. If you’re a registered Republican (or Democrat, or any other party) you should have to vote in your party in the primary. Then, when the general election comes around, you can vote for whomever.

I’m not bitter ....
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again.
After the Wild Card “comeback” in Buffalo years ago vs. the Oilers, no Bills fan gets to complain.
I felt your pain for YEARS.......

I think I gotcha beat.
Just more bumbling by the inept state party. Lousy leadership, lousy candidates, and lousy campaigns. Now they want our loyalty? Don’t hold your breath.
That is downright scary. I would never promise to vote for the Republican nominee before knowing who he is. I hope VA Republican’s rebell against this rule.
We can agree on the Rudy911, but you can keep your loyalty with the Titans, I have my own inner battles with the Saints.
Swear loyalty to the Party, does that include giving them blood as well?
Thanks for the ping.
Hey, no need to bring all that up.

I’ve always been a big Ron Paul fan, even before it was ‘cool’ to be a big Ron Paul fan. I strongly agree with him on almost all of his views regarding the role of the federal government and America’s role in the world when it comes to foreign affairs.
Having said that, I do disagree with many of his positions on national security. I can live with that(unless terrorists kill me), but his unwillingness to acknowledge the success in recent months in Iraq is totally wrong. His failure to recognize our success in Iraq makes him appear to be disingenuous and invested in defeat at all costs, just like the antiwar, America hating, left wing liberals. There’s a difference between disagreeing with the decision to go to war, and outright wanting us to lose. During tonights debate Dr. Paul seemed to convey the latter.
I totally agree. A party primary should be just that. A party primary. Only republicans should vote in a republican primary, and likewise for democrats(independents can stay home or go shopping). There is no good or valid reason why a democrat should be voting in a republican primary, just as there is no reason why a republican should be voting in a dem primary. I don't see why anyone allows it to be any other way. IMO, a person should have to be registered with a party for no less than six months to participate in a party primary.
I don’t see how this could be binding in any way. The whole thing is silly.
Are they deliberately trying to piss people off??
Sure looks that way.
No, they are probably sick and tired of the Democrat shenanigans and election fixing. Ron Paul supporters are not Republicans, but that has nothing to do with the primary. Ron Paul doesn’t have a chance in the primary and he is being supported by leftists as a spoiler, third party candidate.
