SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) Rodney King, whose videotaped police beating in 1991 led to deadly rioting when the officers involved were acquitted, was shot on a street corner, but his wounds were not life-threatening, police said.
King, 42, was shot two or three times from a distance by birdshot fired from a shotgun. He then bicycled about 1 1/2 miles back to his home in neighboring Rialto and called police. King was hit in the face, arms, back and torso, police said.
Authorities said when they arrived at the home, King and others appeared drunk and were largely uncooperative in providing information about the shooting.
King was taken to a hospital. His condition on Thursday was not immediately known.
The shooting may have involved a domestic dispute, San Bernardino police Lieutenant Scott Paterson said.
King, who is black, was videotaped being beaten by white Los Angeles police officers after he was stopped for speeding in 1991. Four officers were acquitted of most criminal charges in 1992, triggering rioting in Los Angeles and neighboring cities that left 55 people dead and caused $1 billion in property damage.
King sued the city over the beating and obtained a $3.8 million settlement.
However, he continued to have run-ins with the law. In 2004, he was ordered to spend 120 days in jail and ordered into treatment after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of the drug PCP after he lost control of his SUV in 2003 and slammed into a power pole in Rialto.
Rialto and San Bernardino are about 55 miles east of Los Angeles.
OK, why is this dirtbag still in the news? He has totally ran his life into the ground ever since winning the jackpot against the city, when he could have used the money to move, get cleaned up, and settle down and be someone important.
Those cops just won’t lay off him will they.
Cops shot him with a shot gun?
Unless King has taken up biking for exercise, the fact that he rode his bicycle 1.5 miles back to his house means that he's completely blown his $3.8 million and taxpayers will be paying his medical bills now too.
I guess we can’t all just get along.
What nitwit uses birdshot in an urban enviroment?
The man does have an impressive knack for attracting the s**t, doesn’t he?
Why call the police if you are not going to be totally cooperative when they get there?
That’ll teach him to go hunting with Dick Cheney.
“King and others appeared drunk and were largely uncooperative”
C’mon, Rodney, can’t you just get along?
I mean, yeah, if you’re hunting Rodney, you need double-ought buck. Or slug rounds.
"The shooting may have involved a domestic dispute, San Bernardino police Lieutenant Scott Paterson said."
I thought he wanted everyone to "just get along"
$3.8mm settlement and he’s bicycling himself home? I bet he’s already blown through his settlement.
Why does he keep popping up in the news? Does he have press agaents in the media? Is he working toward a movie contract? Or is he just one of those perennial bad guys who need to be taken off the streets, but isn’t?
I was looking for it. Post 11 before a Cheney/birdshot refernce. I didn’t think I would be the first.
Jeesh give the guy a break!!! Lawyers took 30% leaving him a paltry $2.6 million or so.
More likely his lawyers and taxes blew through his settlement.
Even more likely is that his driver’s license has been lost for DUI.
Apparently he can’t just get along.
Mr. King has been busted several other times, too. The most memorable OTHER time was when he attempted to run over a transvestite prostitute in his car.
Was he duck hunting with Bobby Knight?
Dick Cheney could not be reached for comment...
July 27, 1987: According to a complaint filed by his wife, King beat her while she was sleeping, then dragged her outside the house and beat her again. King was charged with battery and pleaded "no contest." He was placed on probation and ordered to obtain counseling. He never got the counseling.
November 3, 1989: King, brandishing a tire iron, ordered a convenience store clerk to empty the cash register. The clerk grabbed the tire iron, causing King to fall backwards and knock over a pie rack. King swung the rack at the clerk and fled the store with $200. King was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, second-degree robbery, and intent to commit great bodily injury. In a plea agreement, King pleaded guilty to the robbery charge and the other charges were dropped. He was sentenced to two years in prison, but was paroled on December 27, 1990.
The Arrest of Rodney King on March 3, 1991 March 3, 1991: After being seen speeding on the 210 freeway by CHP officers, King led them on a chase at speeds estimated at up to 110 to 115 mph. When finally stopped, King refused requests to get into the prone position and appeared to charge one of the officers. He was beaten and arrested. King was charged with felony evading. Charges were later dropped.
King's 3/3/91 Arrest Record
King's Trouble with the Law After March 3, 1991 May 11, 1991: King was pulled over for having an excessively tinted windshield. Although King was driving without a license and his car registration had expired, King was not charged.
May 28, 1991: King picked up a transvestite prostitute in Hollywood who happened to be under surveillance by LAPD officers. King and the prostitute were observed in an alley engaging in sexual activity. When the prostitute spotted the officers, King sped away, nearly hitting one of them. King later explained that he thought the vice officers were robbers trying to kill him. No charges were filed.
June 26, 1992: King's second wife reported to police that King had hit her and she feared for her life. King was handcuffed and taken to a police station, but his wife then decided against pressing charges.
July 16, 1992: King was arrested at 1:40 A.M. for driving while intoxicated. No charges were filed.
August 21, 1993: King crashed into a wall near a downtown Los Angeles nightclub. He had a blood alcohol level of 0.19. King was charged with violating his parole and sent for sixty day to an alcohol treatment center. He was also convicted on the DUI charge and ordered to perform twenty days of community service.
May 21, 1995: King was arrested for DUI while on a trip to Pennsylvania. King failed field sobriety tests, but refused to submit to a blood test. He was tried and acquitted.
July 14, 1995: King got into an argument with his wife while he was driving, pulled off the freeway and ordered her out of the car. When she started to get out, King sped off, leaving her on the highway with a bruised arm. King was charged with assault with a deadly weapon (his car), reckless driving, spousal abuse, and hit-and-run. King was tried on all four charges, but found guilty only of hit-and-run driving.
March 3, 1999: King allegedly injured the sixteen-year-old girl that he had fathered out of wedlock when he was seventeen, as well as the girl's mother. King was arrested for injuring the woman, the girl, and for vandalizing property. King claimed that the incident was simply "a family misunderstanding."
September 29, 2001: King was arrested for indecent exposure and use of the hallucinogenic drug PCP.
Maybe he needs more cash.
I knew it. I knew it. Just can’t lay off my dear friend, Bill Clinton, for a second, can you? **S**
As an aside, with a wife like Lynne, our VP has one he** of a lot going for him, I say!
Have a great weekend.
It wasn’t me...I promise!
No mention of him running over his girlfriend with his car?
Must not be news.
How does he stay out of prison?
Yup, same thing came to my mind, he blew all his money otherwise he would have been driving around in a Cadillac Escalade instead of peddling around on a bike. What a loser!
I wouldn't call Rialto "urban".
Probably out drinking with Reginald Denny.
Probably out drinking with Reginald Denny.
OK, I stand correctd.
So this isnt the story weve been anticipating, where he kills people with his 11th DUI arrest???
This clown is a one-man crime spree.
Bill Clinton is your dear friend? Hmm...lemme parse that sentence again...hmm...oh, *I* am Bill Clinton. :). Oh to be him for just a short while...the opportunity to "dutch oven" Hillary...to substitute Mega Weight Gain powder for her Slim Fast powder and uncalibrate the bathroom scale...to make her fly into a rage by squeezing the toothpaste in the middle. I would have so much fun.
Anyways...Mrs. Cheney must have been mad hot in her day. Dick did well for himself.
As I remember, that was a case where he attempted to run over a vice officer while he had a transvestite prostitute in the car, rather than the other way around.
RK on a bicycle? Safer for everyone. Suspended license, I suspect. Amazing he didn't just ignore it.
This statement has been showing up in reports for over sixteen years now, and it's factually incorrect. The CHP officers involved testified that Rodney was going about 90. They pulled off the freeway to let him go past, then got back on and had accelerate to around 115 to catch up to him. The L.A. Times reported the facts incorrectly, then proceed to use them in their effort to try to discredit the police report by claiming that a Yugo wouldn't go 115. That claim doesn't appear anywhere in the report, it's just a figment of the MSM's agenda-driven imagination.
Sorta like the footage of Rodney charging the police that 'went missing' from the original tape within hours of the time the MSM got their hands on it.
don’t spray me, bro’.
Interesting. Sadly, an all to common pattern in journalism today.
Wassup? I though his first name was “Motorist”, not Rodney.
I guess now he’ll have to change it to “Cyclist.”
You beat me to it.
Post of the day. ;-D
I think it was a Hyundai. We had one and they will not go 115 MPH, even downhill. With a tailwind. 90 MPH sounds about right.
Hell, he probably stole the bicycle. lol
