A roundup of Gallup health polls over the past four years finds that Republicans are far more likely than Democrats to report having excellent mental health.
The survey found that 58 percent of Republicans polled reported having excellent mental health. Only 38 percent of Democrats and 43 percent of Independents reported the same.
The study concluded it was unclear why there was such a strong correlation, but the relationship between party affiliation and mental health was virtually constant even within categories of income, age, gender and other factors.
"The reason the relationship exists between being a Republican and more positive mental health is unknown, and one cannot say whether something about being a Republican causes a person to be more mentally healthy or whether something about being mentally healthy causes a person to choose to become a Republican," the study said.
The study speculated that the fact that Republicans have on average higher incomes than members of others parties could play a factor. But in the study, even Republicans making less than $50,000 a year reported having excellent health far more than Democrats earning the same.

I would say the reason "why" is pretty simple. The essential difference between conservatives and liberals is that conservatives generally believe we are each responsible for our own lives and the ultimate creators of our lives. As a consequence, conservatives believe that each of us has power. "Liberals" don't.
When you believe you're essentially powerless, it doesn't make for a terribly happy life.
So conservatism is about finding the power that you have, and individual responsibility. So-called "liberalism" is all about society, your upbringing, the government, being a victim, and "the Man."
I fully believe that many if not most of the so-called "liberal elites" know full well the nature of reality. They have chosen to live like conservatives in their own personal lives, taking responsibility for their own success -- at the very same time as they promote the philosophy of liberalism to others, knowing it to be false and detrimental to their gullible followers.
In other words, they knowingly promote the false liberal philosophy because they use it to make themselves kingpins. If their subjects ever learn the truth and break free and become independent, then they will lose their fiefdoms.
Ironically, this means that the conservative who seeks to encourage and help others to stand on their own two feet, though he is labeled as "callous and uncaring" by the liberal, actually cares much more about his fellow man, and is prepared to give them far better help, than the liberal politician who continues to promote and encourage their servitude.
And in fact, as I recall, conservatives voluntarily give more of their own money than liberals do.
Liberalism isn't about caring for others -- it's about FORCING your fellow citizen to "give" more to the "helpless" -- dammit.
The classic example, of course, has to do with "underprivileged African Americans." The conservative would welcome any and all black Americans who take true responsibility for their lives as equal adults. The liberal politicians would prefer that as many African Americans as possible remain helpless children, dependent upon the government and their liberal politician sugar daddies... forever.

Of course if this week’s unfortunate hostage crisis had happened at a Ron Paul for President HQ, it would have likely been committed by some frustrated 911 conspiracy theorist who in his frustrated state of confusion was convinced Dick Cheney was beaming signals directly into his brain from the NSA Computers, and uplinked to the secret black satellite that can find you anywhere on the face of the earth, and telling him to gather as many people together as possible to wait for Dennis Kucinich tt pilot the Mother Ship down to pick them all up before the ChiComms succeed in cracking the DOD computer codes again and whistled up another B-52 out of Barksdale full of live W-80 warheads to go bomb Pakistan, and make it look like Barak Obama made it all happen.
No doubt the theoretical perp would have been too incoherent to make any sense and in his confusion would likely have ended up tazing himself in lieu of taking hostages...
