Thompson warns of welfare state in Orange County speech
AP on Bakersfield Californian ^ | 12/1/07 | AP

Posted on 12/01/2007 8:26:56 PM PST by NormsRevenge

Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson said Saturday that election of a Democrat to the White House in 2008 would open the way for a welfare state where bigger government, higher taxes and defense cutbacks sap the country's economic and military strength.

"Our country is at a crossroads," Thompson told several hundred people at a rally at a community clubhouse.

"We know that the most liberal element of the Democratic Party has taken control of the Democratic Party, and if they win this next election we're going to go down the road of a welfare state," he said.

After warning of a government that gets "bigger and bigger," he said "I don't think the American people are going to turn the keys to this country over to the most left-wing part of a left-wing party next year."

"We've got to make sure that doesn't happen," he said.

Thompson's speech came on a day when most of his time was devoted to a string of fundraisers.

He never mentioned his Republican rivals in his remarks, but in a GOP race where some candidates have been criticized for shifting positions on conservative touchstone issues, Thompson asserted he is squarely in the Reagan tradition. "Principles don't change, circumstances change," he said.

In an interview published on the Orange County Register Web site, Thompson said he was "pretty much where I thought we'd be" in the polls but stressed that races in early voting states remain volatile.

He hinted he'd have to win South Carolina, or come close to it, to remain competitive.

"I must do pretty well in Iowa. I must do very well in South Carolina. And then once you come South, anybody who's keeping up with any of that knows that I'm ahead most places," Thompson said.

BULLSHI$! THE BEST HOPE AMERICA HAS IS TO ELECT A REAL, TRUE CONSERVATIVE.

HOW MANY WAYS DO YOU HAVE TO TOLD THAT ROMNEY, HUCKABEE, RUDY AND McCAIN ARE ALL REPUBLICANS IN NAME ONLY. THEY ALL HAVE SOCIALLY LIBERAL RECORDS. McCAIN IS A FINE MAN, BUT HE WILL GIVE AMNESTY TO 30 MILLION ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.

GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF WHERE IT SHOULD NOT BE. DO YOUR HOMEWORK. IF YOU CALL YOURSELF A REPUBLICAN AND A CONSERVATIVE, YOU COULD NOT POSSIBLE BE VOTE FOR ANY OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED FOUR RINOS.

GET WITH THE PROGRAM! ROMNEY DOES NOT REPRESENT OUR VALUES AS CONSERVATIVES! HE MAY SAY HE DOES, BUT THEN WHEN HE GETS INTO OFFICE HE WILL BECOME THE LIBERAL HE TRULY IS!

I AM SICK OF YOU PEOPLE NOT GIVING FRED THOMPSON A FIGHTING CHANCE. FRED IS THE ONLY TRUE CONSERVATIVE IN THE BUNCH AND HE WILL BEAT ANY DEMOCRAT THEY PUT UP. NOT ONLY THAT, HE WILL PULL OTHER CONSERVATIVES WITH HIM AND WE MAY ACTUALLY HAVE A CHANCE AT GETTING THE HOUSE AND SENATE BACK. THAT IS NOT UNREALISTIC!

Well .. if both Tom McClintock and Rush Limbaugh think Fred has it .. it’s a very good sign to me that I should support Fred.

My problem now is - I’m supporting Hunter. I can’t decide if I should vote for Hunter in the primary and pray Thompson does well in the primary too.

No! He did not “let” Clinton off the hook - the wonderful John Glenn LIED to Fred and when the vote came - John buckled and wouldn’t support Fred.

Without Glenn’s vote - the investigation was dead in the water. The senate is not a one-man show - it takes support - and Fred thought he had Glenn’s vote - but Glenn betrayed Fred.

If you’re going to accuse someone - please get your facts straight!

I don’t know who “we” is .. but we’re not supporting Rudy!

I firmly believe that with Hillary’s high negatives and her polarizing nature, this is THE best opportunity to get a true conservative into the White House. This is our shot to start a new conservative wave. There is absolutely no way we should compromise the ideologies that we know to be correct and best for this country by matching a liberal against a liberal out of fear.

Well stated, mmichaels. I would hope that the supporters of Duncan Hunter will move into Fred's column. I'm thinking that there would be a good place for him in a Thompson administration (personally, I'd hope to see him as the VP or perhaps Homeland Security).

At any rate, his talents will be wasted should the Great Pantsuit prevail.

This is getting tiresome....

What is tiresome,,,

is the willingness of some so-called conservatives to help elect Hillary throwing the conservative base 'under the bus' by supporting a LIBERAL like Giuliani--who is guaranteed to destroy the 'conservative identity' of the Republican Party.

Now THAT IS REALLY TIRESOME!

I get real tired of this type of comment. The constitution “requires” Congress/President to provide for the National Defense. It does not “require” that the government provide welfare, social security, education, medicare etc., etc.

I will agree that the Defense budget is “every” congressman’s and Senator’s personal piggy bank, and I would love to see a law that required only Pentagon requested spending to be allowed in the defense bill. I would require all defense spending to need a 60% vote of both houses to spend my/our money on “junk”. Maybe even a citizens commission to approve the final draft bill before it can be voted on.

So, what I’m saying is; pay the military, fund the infastructure, invest in R&D and buy the best equipment we can fund, but do not fund social engineering, ecology, or any of the other crap that the socialist want.

I would restrict ex-military O-5 and above from taking a job with a defense contraactor for 10 years after leaving the military. That will take the incentive out of giving a “wink and a nod” to defense contractors that are ripping the public off because they can’t work for them anyways.

Now stop telling me that we should be ashamed because we fund the defense dept but not your pet project of social engineering through confiscation of tax payers money to fund things that are not mandated by the constitution and may even be unconstitutional.

Thompson’s flaw is that he only voted to remove Clinton on one count instead of two. Do you even care what Rudy’s position on the impeachment was.

Rudy may be your best hope, if you’re pulling for Hillary, but a guy who endorsed the Democrat candidate for Governor in NY, who supports gay marriage, contributes large chunks of money to the radical abortion group NARL and made speaches encouraging illegals to come to N.Y. is not going to energize the base. Rudy Nomination = Hillary Win period.

What’s wrong with defense contractors? A friend of mine just got back from Iraq. Body armor and a rifle built by defense contractors kept him alive and in useful condition, and he has nothing but praise for them.

Besides, it isn’t exactly “free”. The defense contractors have to produce a serviceable product, while most recipients of state money only have to lay on their asses like the worthless pieces of misery they are.

No, Fred, our country was at a cross-roads in 2001—thanks to W, we have crossed the Rubicon. After 9/11, George Bush told people to go shopping rather than enlist. In fact, the US military has undergone a net decrease under his tenure. He then followed it up by signing the Medicare Prescription Drug benefit into law.

“We know that the most liberal element of the Democratic Party has taken control of the Democratic Party, and if they win this next election we’re going to go down the road of a welfare state,” he said.

Already happening in Michigan. The communist governor here has savaged businesses and drove many productive people from the state.

She’s creating a welfare/socialist state, with the primary demographic of state workers, welfare bums, and retirees depending on the state for cash. Her next task is to destroy the realty market. One realtor is predicting a 25% crash in home prices this summer.

So if you want a cheap house and don’t mind being surrounded by wolves, really stupid rat voters and hippy welfare bums, rural Michigan is your dream.

Rudith Giussolini is starting to fade both in Rasmussen national polls and in the early state polls. Romney is heading down in Iowa.

The big problem for Fred is that Huckabee is taking conservative votes away from Fred, as well as Romney.

If Fred is going to win this the primary, we need Huckabee’s numbers to start collapsing ASAP!

There needs to be an aggressive targeting of Huckster’s liberal record (let’s face facts here, the ONLY thing that he can claim a Conservative record on is being pro-life, but other than that, he’s simply Romney with a Southern accent. Somebody who pursued a generally pro-big government agenda, presided over a withering of his party, and left it with only a single statewide or federal member, effectively the weakest it has been since Winthrop Rockefeller, Sr. was defeated for Governor in 1970. The only southern state moving in the wrong direction back towards the Dems. Contrast that with almost every other successful GOP Governors in the Deep South (Barbour, Riley, Perdue)).

The media, too, is helping Huckster by giving him a free pass (which Chris Matthews pointed out just the other day to his, albeit not to my, astonishment). They want to coronate a RINO who will then be easily ripped apart once nominated. Ignore Huckster’s faults and then spend the spring and summer and fall reminding Conservatives of his tax-hiking (more tax hikes as Governor than Bill Clinton did), taking marching orders from Tyson on importation of illegals and browbeating Christians for opposing the invasion, nanny-stater style governance. It’ll be a fiasco, and the media is counting on it.
