Senator Craig: 'Latest allegations are completely false'

Five men have come forward to say they have had sexual encounters with Idaho’s senior senator Larry Craig. In Sunday’s edition of the Idaho Statesmen four of the men are revealing their names. Senator Craig is denying these allegations.

Two of the accusers' names were released in previous publications when they claimed of having encounters with Craig. The names of two other men are new, and there's an anonymous fifth accusation from a local man who fears if he releases his name, he faces retaliation.

In audiotapes they say this.

David Phillips

David Phillips first told his story to Washington DC gossip website, wonkette. Phillips, an IT man in DC told the website that 20-years ago he had a sexual encounter with Craig.

Mike Jones

Mike Jones, who you may have heard of before for his involvement with the Ted Haggard sex scandal says he took 200 dollars from Craig for sex, more than two years ago. Jones told the paper he didn't know who Craig was until he saw his first news conference back on August 28th. Rumors that Jones had met with Craig surfaced in October, but Jones never admitted to having sex with the Senator until now.

Greg Ruth

Greg Ruth who is from Tacoma, Washington says back in 1981 while at a republican conference in Coeur d’Alene Craig, who was a bachelor at the time, followed him into the bathroom and tried to make conversation. Ruth who was openly gay told the Statesman Craig gave him his number and told him, he could stay with him when he visited Washington DC.

Tom Russell

Tom Russell, a Nampa native who now lives in Utah contacted the Statesman about what he says was unusual behavior from the Senator. Russell, who was openly gay when he met Craig, says the Senator suggested a meeting and allegedly used signals typical of gay men in public places.

The fifth person who is a gay Boise businessman says that he and Senator Craig were on the same plane from Boise to Denver, when Craig made the same motions to him that he was later arrested for in a Minneapolis airport bathroom.

The Statesman says in its investigation they don't have videos, messages, or a letter from Craig to these men but we need to keep in mind these allegations also cannot be disproved.

This is the statement Senator Craig released about the Statesman’s allegations.

“It is unfortunate that the Idaho Statesman has chosen to continue to lower itself to the standards of what can best be described as tabloid journalism. Like its previous coverage, these latest allegations are completely false and have no basis in reality. In fact, the paper itself states that these baseless accusations contain no definitive evidence yet they still decided to print them anyway. However, despite the fact the Idaho Statesman has decided to pursue its own agenda and print these falsehoods without any facts to back them up, I won’t let this paper’s attempt to malign my name stop me from continuing my work to serve the people of Idaho.”

It's time for you to go, Larr, ol' buddy, ol' pal.

If you insist on sticking around, you'll get your wide stance whupped in the primary.

Claiming that "the latest allegations are completely false" does not negate a Guilty plea or a stated intention to resign.

Which you are now welshing on...

From here, Larr, there is no way for your sorry ass to go but down!

Pfft, most of the claims sound pretty incredible.

The hagard prostitute just happened to have a homosexual tryst with Larry Craig and he just now recalls it?

Craig was all over the airwaves for the NRA in the Senate, and this prostitute now recalls?

I’m calling BS on that one.

The dude on the plane?

Does that sound remotely credible?

“The same motions he made in the restroom in MN”?

On a plane? How?

I won’t bother to go line by line through the Newspaper “piece” as IMO, Craig should have been as good as his word and resigned.

Why discredit these statements for a guy who is not keeping his word to all of us?

Craig is a distraction and needs to go quietly. No one believes him, sad but true. His career is over.

Anyone believe the Senator? Not me.

Anyone believe the ultra-liberal Idaho Statesman? Not me. Proof is what's needed, not unsupported allegations.

Well - assuming that fabrications are that easy to manufacture and peddle - take a look at someone even more reviled on the left, say Newt Gingrich, and ask why there haven’t been spades of such accusations (gay, straight, etc., etc., etc.) against them.

What evidence would meet your definition of proof?

Exactly correct.

The Demonrats want Senator Craig out of office so badly - how difficult is it for them to find 5 gay men to make unsubstantiated charges against Senator Craig given the foot tapping arrest in the Minneapolis Airport.

THAT arrest was totally bogus.

These accusations are without substantiation and therefore bogus as well.

But they add to the mindset out there that has affected many here to go with the tabloidal accusations rather than understanding WHAT is at WORK here and it is NOT that the Senator is gay or bi or anything but a faithful husband of his wife.

It is a full blown effort to get rid of a Conservative Republican US Senator (how many of those are left???) who has come down strongly on the right side of prolife and pro marriage issues.

Wake up. Or...for Sunday...waketh upeth.

He should have resigned like he said he would.

These allegations may be false, but given his behavior and flip-flops on guility pleas, etc. and then deciding he’ll just stay in power, he should have expected this. He could have ended it.

You are falling into their trap!

Rules for Radicals provides the organizer with a tactical style for community organization that assumes an adversarial relationship between groups of people in which one either dominates or is dominated.

“Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules. You can kill them with this. They can no more obey their own rules than the Christian church can live up to Christianity.”
