Found it (ain’t the internet amazing?)

Wasp, by Eric Russell. If you ever run across it, it’s a good read. No theology or complicated ideas. Just cool stuff . . . at least for a boy . . . which we still are at heart on the good days.

Dune and The Golden Compass deal with many complex and differing views about morality and social order

The movie simply looks abysmal. I think it?ll flop.

I agree with comparsion. I might read the book. I was a long time fan of LOTR. Heard about Dune the Movie I went and saw it. Thought it was OK but was underwhelmed. However I went ahead and read Dune the Book.

Needless to say I was very disappointed when I reviewed Dune the movie again and saw how much the director had butchered it.

Looks like Compass will be the same. Too complex to stuff into a few hours, regardless the anti-morality tale plot

Indeed. A flop.

I enjoy them because they make us think.

Been there, done that. Got better things to think about than wasting any more time or brain power on man's garbage.

You're very welcome! There is no avoiding the film but perhaps with enough postings, people will avoid purchasing the actual trilogy as a "Christmas gift".

Christmas blessings to you and your family!

“The Golden Compass” is apparently designed to be a pedagogical sneak attack on Christianity

It seem to me more out of the 60s counter culture ethos of liberation: sexual liberation, personal liberation & hedonism (do it if it feels good), moral relativism & value creation (the real Nietzschean deal), etc. It's the “Don’t let authority figures like the “Establishment” or Church tell you otherwise, man” indoctrination hippie kit, but for kids who like LOTR, Narnia and Harry Potter. However, if it was truly Nietzschean the movie wouldn't want converts or students... Zarathrustra certainly didn't. As well, Nietzsche wanted aristocrats not hippies. This seems to be more about the continuing rise of secular liberalism of the left at the expense of the church. A liberation theology first started by Marxists and adopted by hippies and Hollywood.

All I want for Christmas is for one person who posts to actually know the context of this:

Sartre: to be is to do

Nietzsche: to do is to be

Sinatra: do be, do be, doo

********************* Hint: Not the three tenors

If that is the case, then maybe God has delivered us by not having Peter Jackson direct this evil movie, since if anyone could have done this well, he has the technical skills.

Seems to me the series of books is based more on Milton and Blake than Nietzsche, then mixed with ideas from Gnosticism - the 'Authority' in the books definitely reminds me of the Gnostic concept of the Demiurge.

I liked the books very much - thought the third book could have been better written. Will probably see the film this weekend, though I doubt it'll be as good as the book (which was called 'Northern Lights' over here: a far better title than 'Golden Compass' IMHO).

I have read the majority of them and I really like them. They are very Sci-Fi Space opera with just enough action. While they are not up to the quality of Dune itself, I feel they are worth reading for fans of Dune who want more...IMHO

It’s an irony in Nietzsche himself . . . if he really believed his own philosophy why was he bothering to write it out at all? To help us? Altruism? He should have been dominating others or whatever the superman he envisioned would do.

Agreed.

I finished “That Hideous Strength” this weekend. The most political book I’ve ever read by Lewis. Most FReepers would like it, I think.
