It is with much sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that a soldier serving with the Brigade Reconnaissance Force (BRF), 5 Regiment Royal Artillery has been killed in an explosion today, Tuesday 4 December 2007, in southern Afghanistan. MOD. Opens in a new window.

Two other soldiers were also injured as a result of the blast.

Just after 1300 local time, the soldiers were conducting a tactical patrol to the north of Sangin, Helmand Province, when the vehicle they were travelling in was caught in an explosion.

Medical treatment was provided prior to all three soldiers being evacuated to the field hospital at Camp Bastion. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, one of the soldiers sadly died as a result of his wounds. The other two soldiers are currently receiving further medical treatment and their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Every death is a tragedy.

But there was a time when newspapers would say "Big attack in Normandy. 5000 killed, but troops maintain foothold on beaches"

Nowadays, every once in a while, we see "soldier killed", and some folks think it's all a lost cause.

I understand your point and appreciate your post. But you’re talking about a great continental war that was 60 years ago. I guess that we must take each conflict in context with its place in history, in this case certainly one of the most hard-fought wars the UK has fought since the Falklands, or perhaps Operation Telic 1 back in 2003.

Hats off to the medevac crews who do a stunning job 24/7.
