British Xmas card mocks Polish pope
06.12.2007
Poles in the UK protest against a Christmas card which features John Paul II and George W. Bush.
The deceased John Paul II is lying on a catafalque. George Bush is standing over him. The speech bubble next to his face says: "What happened to Santa?". This Christmas card is selling like hot cakes in Britain, causing outrage amongst the Polish community.
Poles have already informed they would organise street protests.
"It's appalling. Using the image of the deceased Holy Father is a scandal. Muslims protested at the cartoons deriding Muhammad. Why should offending Christians go disregarded?", says Tomasz Giza, who has lived in London for 5 years, quoted by "Dziennik".
The case has been discussed in Polish Radio London 24, with hundreds of listeners expressing their outrage on the phone. It was then that an idea to organise street protests was conceived.
"Retailers should be banned from selling the postcards. Even if the deceased person were not the pope, it would still be grossly disrespectful. I mean, it is a funeral photo, after all", says Karolina Stolecka, working in one of London hotels, quoted by "Dziennik".

Sometimes I think the muslims are right - relating to their reactions to such events.
Where’s the picture of Catholic Rage Boy?
THERE IS NONE!
So how many Muslims have been killed as the Polish street erupts in violence?
Puhlease! The pope was a man. Is it tasteless? Yes. Blasphemy? No.
And no, the Muzzies are NEVER right in their violent actions.
The hypocrisy is just amazing.
Actually, that’s pretty funny!
Who said it was ‘Blasphemy’?
You’re the first to use the word blasphemy here...but go on with your straw-man.
But not for a Christmas card.
I’ll admit I laughed but it is pretty tasteless.
When the Muzzies commit their attrocities, it is usually became someone has “blasphemed” the prophet or something. Was just making the comparison since others are equating offending Muslims and offending Catholics.
In either case, it may be tasteless, but it isn’t worth the lather people are working themselves up to.
Tasteless and anti-Catholic, which is an ingrained, 400 year old British habit.
Too bad they can’t make fun of the Muslims instead of the Poles, but I think I can guess why.
I am more offended by the continual use of X-mas instead of CHRIST-mas. Yes, I know what the X stands for, but I still don’t like abbreviating the Lord’s name.

Please freepmail me if you want on/off this list
How is this making fun of Poles? It is making fun of Bush. I don’t even see it as anti-Catholic. It is anti-Bush.
Sorry, but I did snicker!
It does show what a low opinion the world has of his intelligence.
Might be interesting to know who manufactured and distributed these cards.
The death toll resulting from rioting Catholics stands at: 0
What is this ‘Xmas’?
The squeaky wheel gets the oil. Some things never change.
Yes. And we have a low view of the world’s intelligence. The look on Laura’s face is even like “you moron!”
The catholic angle is kinda neutral on this one. Very tasteless as a Christmas card particularly. Tasteless because they are using someone’s death to make a Bush joke. But, it’s primarily anti-Bush.
Because we are not Muslims.
Thank you. For a while I thought I was the only one that saw the real intent.
Everyone else is caught up in their PC skewed interpretations that they miss the slam of GWB.
Puhleaze, go back to your dimmie whiners.
The Poles consider JP II, the Polish Pope, to be a great national hero. He not only was a Polish boy who made good, he freed Poland from the Soviets.
It’s anti-Catholic in that it’s disrespectful of the Pope, lying in state after his death.
But I agree, mainly it’s intended to suggest that Bush is stupid. Red suit, Santa, Bush is a little confused about these religious matters.
Although I must say he looks a lot better suited for the occasion than bill clinton next to him with his usual smirk.
All the real men have left the isles?
What an idiotic card.
“British Xmas card mocks Polish pope (and President Bush)”
I didn’t know Richard Dawkins has gotten into the greeting card biz!
(/sarc)
Lots of Poles now living in Britain. They should know from the war that Poles will take action.
Am I the only one who finds it ironic that someone is whining that I should go back to “dimmie whiners”?
It is disrespectful, but it isn’t anti-polish any more than showing Bush making a comment about “guess the cherry trees are safe now” while looking at a George Washington lying in state would be anti-American.
Its a stupid Bush joke, that happens to be tasteless in that it involves a dead Pope.
You're free to not do so if you don't like it.
It’s time for all Catholics, worldwide, to riot and burn cars in the streets.
You are right. I am Catholic and part Polish, and the only target of the humor here is Bush.
And I am free to be offended when others do.
You guys are SOOOOOOOO royally screwed!
Sure be offended all you’d like. Isn’t freedom great?
On St. Nicholas’ optional memorial as well.

Keep it up Satan, there’s a beatdown coming.
I’m sure if someone took a pic of one of our grandpa or grandma’s funerals with us on it at a young age or at present) praying... with what happened to Santa or some such saying (granted, probably no red and white), no one would like it. Some will say the relationship’s not the same, but none would say it was a joke about me, the fact that my dead relative was in it doesn’t matter, they’re gone... who cares.
I wonder how many shelters, food pantries, hospitals, nursing homes, third world countries the cardmaker visited over 25 years? I wonder if he’s around for his family at all. The hate and thought process it took to think this up (in all fairness, it may have been his first thought when he saw the picture, who knows), the steps to put it on a Christmas card... that’s too deep for me. Smells like Kurtzman.
Didn’t post correctly: I meant to say that I haven’t see nthis card anywhere, in spite of the fact it’s supposed to be ‘selling like hot cakes’.
