A posh food store in New York's Greenwich Village has found itself red faced after offering hams for sale with the slogan "Delicious for Hanukkah," the current Jewish religious holiday.
The non-kosher labelling was spotted at the weekend by Manhattan novelist Nancy Kay Shapiro, 46, who decided instead of alerting management to take a picture of the unorthodox sign and post it on the Internet.
"I just thought it was funny," Shapiro, who described herself as an unobservant Jew, told the New York Post. "I wasn't offended in any way. I just thought, here's somebody who knows nothing about what Jews eat."
By the time Shapiro returned to the store on Tuesday, the first night of Hanukkah, the signs had vanished, the newspaper reported.
A manager at the Balducci's gourmet grocery store told the newspaper that the sign was a mistake and blamed it on a stock clerk.
Pork and shellfish are among the foods considered unclean under Jewish law.
The essential difference between normal human beings and two-legged animals...
This is too damn funny.
OY!
Wooof!! Lol! Public Schools.
This is classic: it’s PC gone amuck. In an effort to be more inclusive, they indirectly stick their foot in their mouth. Frickin’ beautiful.
This would have never happened 30 years ago because non-Jews wouldn’t have given a crap about showing diversity and giving Hanukkah “equal time.” They would have left the Hanukkah stuff to Jews and just observed Christmas themselves.
Nancy Kay Shapiro has a wonderful sense of humor. How refreshing.
Every time that I see the photograph I am reminded of the true face of Islam. The reason we do not see it here in the States (yet) is that, so far, they have not outnumbered us.
A friend of mine in NJ (who is Jewish) worked in a supermarket in the meat section, and rearranged those shifting tags, so it said, “kosher bacon.”

What’s a Jewish dilemma?

OK, now that there’s funny, I don’t care who you are.

I'd never make it as a Jewish woman. Those are my two favorite "white meats" :-).
I heard that the stock clerk’s name is Antiochus.
There are a lot of non-observant Jews out there who celebrate Hanukkah but don’t impose any dietary restrictions on themselves. For these people, a Hanukkah Ham is not a contradiction.

There's a brief article about my ham photos in the NY Daily News today! I'm relieved to see I wasn't misquoted.
The photos are now available at my quickie cafepress store on mugs, an apron, magnets, and cards suitable for next Chanukah!
