A posh food store in New York's Greenwich Village has found itself red faced after offering hams for sale with the slogan "Delicious for Hanukkah," the current Jewish religious holiday.
The non-kosher labelling was spotted at the weekend by Manhattan novelist Nancy Kay Shapiro, 46, who decided instead of alerting management to take a picture of the unorthodox sign and post it on the Internet.
"I just thought it was funny," Shapiro, who described herself as an unobservant Jew, told the New York Post. "I wasn't offended in any way. I just thought, here's somebody who knows nothing about what Jews eat."
By the time Shapiro returned to the store on Tuesday, the first night of Hanukkah, the signs had vanished, the newspaper reported.
A manager at the Balducci's gourmet grocery store told the newspaper that the sign was a mistake and blamed it on a stock clerk.
Pork and shellfish are among the foods considered unclean under Jewish law.
If you run a gourmet food store in Manhattan, you BETTER take Jewish sensibilities into account or you will lose a huge portion of your customer base.
Satan certainly knew what he was doing when he invented Islam. I think that faith manages to enhance the darkest parts of the psyche.
Abi gezunt
Man, I wish you hadn’t posted that so close to lunch. Yum!
LOL! Let’s post a sign that lets everybody know our IQ.
“Delicious for Holidays”
New York of all places the Jewish capital of the US! LOL
Maybe the same people who are taking Christ our of Christmas are just trying to take the kosher out of Hanukah. After all, its just about a family candelabra. Who wouldn't enjoy that. < / Oy! It's sarcasm>
I hope the Jewish folks have a since of humor for some ignorant store clerk!
That and the fact that we haven't surrendered our right to keep and bear arms like the Euroweenies have. It's a real bugger to impose islam on people who can put metal on target.
I am reminded of this tidbit from 2002:
Supermarket apologizes for fried chicken slur
A Pennsylvania supermarket has apologized for advertising a sale on fried chicken in honour of Black History Month.
Giant Food Stores customer Lance Sellers brought the advert to the attention of the manager of the store in Union Deposit east of Harrisburg.
Paula Diane Harris, president of the Greater Harrisburg Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People, said the sign reinforces racist stereotypes.
“Not all African-Americans eat fried chicken, greens and chitlins. We like salad, roast beef, low-fat chicken, just like everybody else,” she said.
The sign read: “In honor of Black History Month, we at Giant are offering a special savings on fried chicken.”
“I showed it to a few of the other customers ... and they all were stunned,” Mr Sellers said. “When I approached the store manager about the problem he had the nerve to ask me why it offended me so much.”
Giant Food Stores has apologized and said the sign was not meant to be offensive.
“It did happen. It was at that one store only,” said Denny Hopkins, Giant’s vice president of advertising. “We had a customer bring the sign to us and complain and we immediately took it down.”
The original article cited is actually in The New York Daily News rather than the Post. Here it is:
Kosher Ham ping
ROFL!! At least it doesn’t seem to have been intentional - just clueless! :-)
$6.29/lb for on the bone spiral sliced? Right proud of the product that they appear to buy ready-to-sell. I’ll stick with Sam’s.
Do we need to be Jews to celebrate the holiday?
I wonder if Jews buy Christmas presents?
PS - I knew Jews who loved to eat Bacon.
But true - it was a very odd sign.
