Posted on 12/06/2007 12:01:19 PM PST by Leisler
The landscaper who Mitt Romney fired earlier this week for continuing to employ illegal immigrants says the termination boils down to little more than politics. The GOP presidential candidate cut ties with Ricardo Saenz, of Community Lawn Service in Chelsea, Mass., in anticipation of a Boston Globe article reporting that the company employed undocumented workers a year after the hiring practices were first revealed. Romney said he gave the company a second chance and that "the company's failure to comply with the law is disappointing and inexcusable." But Saenz told FOX25 in Boston that Romney did not demand that the company not employ illegal immigrants. "They never asked me. I present my bid for the price and they say to me, '(Come) back,' that's it," Saenz said, speculating that the presidential race drove the high-profile termination after 11 years of service. Click here to see the Saenz interview with FOX25. The lawn service company has provided endless fodder for Romney's rivals on the campaign trail — frontrunner Rudy Giuliani said during a debate last week that Romney ran a "sanctuary mansion" by allowing illegals to work on Romney's home. Giuliani's criticism came in response to claims that as mayor of New York, Giuliani permitted a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants. Saenz also insisted to the Globe that the workers he hired were legal, but he did not show reporters their papers.

Mitt didn’t specifically request that his contractor follow the law, so he’s to blame?
This guy employed illegals. He got caught. Romney then fires him for embarrassing him.
That’s not politics, that’s the way the world works. This guy should be fined thousands of dollars for breaking the law.
Maybe then no one will feel the need to ask “Are you following the law?”
I tend to believe Romney rather than the Landscaper on this but I could be wrong. Dirty Tricks campaigning?
Must have had a don’t ask don’t tell arrangement.
Don’t ask, don’t tell...
While Romney obviously should have fired the landscaper in the first place, this is a non story politically. Those that find it ‘damning’ were already for somebody else, or just against Romney from the beginning for whatever reason.
As for the landscapper denying he was told not to bring any more illegals, who you going to believe?
The guy running for President....or the guy breaking the law by hiring illegals repeatedly?
Just my opinion.
wow — please excuse Romeny for giving his landscaper the benefit of the doubt in believing that he was no a criminal by hiring illegal workers. sheesh!
You don’t check out the people you allow on your property...?
Me too. How seriously can I take the owner of a landscaping company that employes illegal aliens, when he’s howling to the press that his big-name politician client never “specifically” told him he couldn’t use illegals to work on the property?
“I thought they were Hawaiian.”
“The GOP presidential candidate cut ties with Ricardo Saenz, of Community Lawn Service in Chelsea, Mass., in anticipation... “
The Romney Way. Pay attention to appearance. Substance is
unimportant unless it becomes appearance. Then it must
Hey Mr. Landscaper, didn't it ever dawn on you that it's YOUR responsibility to make sure your employees are legally here?
Chelsea MA, a “Sanctuary City.” By the way, it’s a real bleephole.
Who do you trust more? A Mormon that doesn’t drink or smoke and is a RedSox fan or a guy that employs illegal aliens and is a Yankees fan?
Ok, I just made that up...
And it’s the property owner’s responsibility to protect both his/her family and property by engaging in a little trust but verify. Romney is apparently too cheap and/or lazy to do that.
If he had insisted that all employees be legal, the story would have been Romney to contractor: I want only white people on my property!
When the 5-man crew showed up I doubt there was a green card among them, but they did the job and cleaned up real well.
Landscaper guy throws Romney under the bus.
Mitt’s been saying for a year that he told the guy to get clean.
Last week Mitt said his son had told the guy. ( Mitts off the hook, nice eh? )
He’s running for President and he let’s this issue bang him up? Is he clueless?
Now the guy says that he was never told the first time at all. Point blank.
It is up to the U.S. government or the State government to crack down on employers not a homeowner who is just trying to keep his lawn looking nice.
Has anyone done any checking on contractors hired by NYC during Rudy's reign? How many low bid companies were staffed by illegals?
More to the point, it's up the US and State governments to stop incentivizing US citizens to lounge around collecting welfare checks and food stamps, living in taxpayer-subsidized housing, getting free medical care, and sporadically attending "treatment" programs and "job training" programs. And it's up to us taxpaying voters to make sure the governments stop doing that.
Not clueless, but maybe finally catching on the the voters are serious about this illegal immigration thing.
Saenz says Romney never told him he had to only hire legal workers. Why would Romney, or anyone for that matter, need to tell him that he had to only hire legal workers? That’s ridiculous.
Then Saenz says that all of his workers are legal. But that’s what he got busted for.
Sorry, I believe Romney over this guy on this issue.
So true, but even when you verify you can't be 100% sure. I use a mowing service and the owner assures me all his workers are legal. I have to trust he's telling me the truth but I wonder sometimes. I'm usually not home when they mow, but on the few occasions I've been there not one of them understood English.
I expect others to follow the law, but the landscaper accurately describes the relationship between him and the person who hires his company to landscape, in the article when he says “I just present the price and they say come back”
The responsibility is on the employer not the customer. Does anyone go into Wal-Mart and demand to see the I-9’s of the cashier checking them out. Why are private citizens expected to do the INS’s job, or the government’s job for them. I should never have to INSIST that someone follow the law. Just because I don’t insist that local fast food joint doesn’t hire people who deal drugs doesn’t mean I’m a drug dealer because I eat there and drug dealers are employed there.
He was Governor of the state.
He want’s to be President.
He’s supposed to be a politician.
Doesn’t he know how to play the game? Was he stupid? Cheap, or what?
I’m not blaming him for the first time. It’s the year after.
If the guy was never told, he most likely would of kept the illegals. Which he did.
The other alternative is( the Mitt side he was told and Mitt and sons knowing that this would nail Mitt, let it go for another year, AFTER it came out. Is that stupid, or what?
“Romney hired a contractor to landscape his yard. This does not give him or anyone else who hires a contractor the right to tell said contractor who to hire or fire.”
Who says? I interviewed a mason the other day for some brick tuck-pointing work, and asked him if he used illegal labor. He said `No’ and that he paid his workers a fair wage. So I hired him. If he had `waffled’ I would have kept looking.
Bienvenidos a el mundo real, FRamigo!
Mitt sounds like another “compassionate conservative” we’re saddled with for a while longer. You can have him! I’ll support a conservative who enforces US laws. You know, the president being chief executive and law enforcement officer. And stuff.
You put your family and/or property at risk by allowing any Tom, Dick, or Harry onto it?
“The responsibility is on the employer not the customer.”
RINO apologist stuff & nonsense.
The guy running for President....or the guy breaking the law by hiring illegals repeatedly?<
Romney says landscaper never insisted that he was a criminal.
Hey, his landscaping workers are Americans.
Like hell it doesn't. A company can specify requirements as they see fit.
Ridiculous! When you employ a contractor, it is not your responsibility to enquire whether or not the contractor operates in a legal manner. It is incumbent upon the contractor to obey the laws.
The MSM will pant with excitement.
No more than you are snookered by the guy at the drive through or the guy stocking shelves at your local grocery store. You make sure they are all legal, don’t you?
You mean like you do when the mailman/UPS delivery guy/local flower delivery guy/etc. stops by your front door?
I mean, you check all of their legal status/sex offender status/felony conviction status, right?
Anyways, I guess President Romney will not be able to handle his staff in the White House. Too many people. Son Tagg was busy. bla,bla,bla..
I case you didn’t notice, I’m not running for President. I didn’t go to Harvard. I’m not the brightest guy in the room as Romney supports often point out. And, I’m not a Harvard LAWYER. I bet multi millionaire, Blain founder Mitt made damn sure the landscaper had insurance so that if a limb fell or a guy took his foot off that his lawyer wouldn’t be dragging the Romneys into court. Right?
Five sons and eleven grandchildren, why does he call a landscaper?
11 years landscaping the yard, fellow Mormon and described by the Romneys as a friend.
I think the Romneys are generations past from doing that kind of work.
It’s funny how my objective comments are turned into an attempt political commentary.
Regardless of the candidate or person, I still feel the same way about the situation.
If holding an employer responsible for the status of his employees instead of holding the customr responsible makes me a “Rino apologist” then I suppose I’m guilty.
“This does not give him or anyone else who hires a contractor the right to tell said contractor who to hire or fire.”
If I hire someone to bring strangers onto my property, I am most assuredly going to be sure I KNOW something about these people. It is MY property and MY family at risk from strangers with bad intentions... so, yes, I CAN and WILL tell someone that I hire that he had best have LEGALS on and around my property and be able to VERIFY that to me, on demand.
Exactly right. Funny, when this happened to Tom Tancredo nobody blnked an eye.
It doesn't matter if you are running for President or not, you should never have to demand of a company you do business with "I want you to only hire legal workers."
It should be expected that a company only hire legal workers.
That is why fines for hiring illegal workers should be so high that it is a financial risk to knowingly hire them.
Plumber, electrician, UPS, Fedex, FTD, and Pizza Hut all get this kind of scrutiny from you, right?
