Mike Huckabee once advocated isolating AIDS patients from the general public, opposed increased federal funding in the search for a cure and said homosexuality could ``pose a dangerous public health risk.''
As a candidate for a U.S. Senate seat in 1992, Huckabee answered 229 questions submitted to him by The Associated Press. Besides a quarantine, Huckabee suggested that Hollywood celebrities fund AIDS research from their own pockets, rather than federal health agencies.
``If the federal government is truly serious about doing something with the AIDS virus, we need to take steps that would isolate the carriers of this plague,'' Huckabee wrote.

When asked about AIDS research in 1992, Huckabee complained that AIDS research received an unfair share of federal dollars when compared to cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
``In light of the extraordinary funds already being given for AIDS research, it does not seem that additional federal spending can be justified,'' Huckabee wrote. ``An alternative would be to request that multimillionaire celebrities, such as Elizabeth Taylor (,) Madonna and others who are pushing for more AIDS funding be encouraged to give out of their own personal treasuries increased amounts for AIDS research.''

Since becoming a presidential candidate this year, Huckabee has supported increased federal funding for AIDS research through the National Institutes of Health.

``What people do in the privacy of their own lives as adults is their business,'' Huckabee said. ``If they bring it into the public square and ask me as a taxpayer to support it or to endorse it, then it becomes a matter of public discussion and discourse.''

Those interested should llok at the entire article. I had to cut some interesting statements because of the 300 word limit. Also, IMHO, our knowledge of HIV/AIDS has changed a lot since 1992.
Oh well, even a blind pig finds an acorn every now and then.
Huckabee must know something about epidemiological principles to make wild public health statements. This of course, violates the laws of political correctness, not to mention the marketing of deviance by the gayly diseased community.
Well the quarantine was not necessary, though he may not have known that then. The idea of having Hollywood celebrities fund the cure is fantastic. I wish he still promoted that idea. Hollywood is always talking about taxing me more. They are zillionaires. They push the idea that homosexuality is healthy and good. Let them fund the cure for AIDS. Great idea! There’s a lot of justice in that.
I don’t know why this Huckabee supporter posted this.
If you notice, Huckabee now supports federal funding for AID’s research.
This is just another example of a Huckabee Flip-Flop.
This is still true. Good for him for having the courage to say it.
``My administration will be the first to have an overarching strategy for dealing with HIV and AIDS here in the United States, with a partnership between the public and private sectors that will provide necessary financing and a realistic path toward our goals,’’ Huckabee said in a statement posted on his campaign Web site last month.
I don’t even think the pig found an acorn this time. I agree that too much public money goes into research funding but the idea of isolating people because they have aids is just plain insane.
Only if it were more communicable, like typhoid or other diseases. However, we must not let the god of political correctness make these decisions for us, rather public welfare.
He has become the worst of flip floppers, but he says he isn’t and people believe him. Really really slick.
I’m surprised this is coming out now, since the dems are going to hit him with it again if he gets the nomination.
Agreed on the gods of political correctness, but we knew back in ‘92 AIDS was not communicatable...unless you liked certain types of activities. The gay population did a great job of educating their own and working hard to limit risk.
Sonme one needs to address the causes of AIDS, most can be avoided by a change in life style...but not a peep out any politician on that aspect..

What I could do with that statement. I won't, though I am sorely tempted. :)
Those were, so to speak, my thoughts - broken clock and all.
I felt the same way - all other deadly, communicable diseases throughout the ages, were isolated, and millions of others were protected.
Additionally, like TB, the sufferers were not complicit in their illness, where with, in the beginning, most of the AIDS patients not only contributed to their illness but continued in the life style known to spread it - and had little compunction about spreading it to others.
But they were able to turn it into a "PC" issue and they DID get far more funding than other deadly diseases.
Then it got loose in the drug user domain and spread like wildfire. And they were allowed to make money selling their contaminated blood. How many tens of thousands have died due to "PC"
I liked the "let Hollywood celebrities fund aids research from their own pockets" idea much better.
Frankly, I'm sick to death of cure aids funding drives and the feds giving billions away, only to be spent by the UN on fancy hotels, fine cuisine and useless conferences, then send their minions out to promte abortion and promote gay sex.
Want a cure for aids? keep your butt covered and pants zipped.
As for the aids epidemic in Africa, how many times can the total population die from aids? How many times has it been now, 2- 3 times ? If aids is such an epidemic in Africa, you'd think they would have learned by now how NOT to catch it.
Perhaps more evolution needs to take place until they do. The same applies for aids in America, and everywhere else. There is a cure available to stop the spread of aids, and it's completely free. The problem is those who spread it don't want to take it. Too bad.
(That's the only thing you can slide under the door.)
The quarantine would have contained the disease that has now infected millions in this country. Don’t buy the PC gay agenda statement that quarantine is ineffective.
Problem is hollywood has engaged the liberals to force the taxpayers to sink billions into this useless moneypit easily resolved with eliminating deviant behavor.
They isolated TB And smallpox victims. What kind of idiot feels they have to suck a queer? Fund AIDS research if it’ll get rid of all or 99% of them. Got a kid to donate? Comeon now give
generously.
Anybody can say anything, it takes REAL courage to act upon it.
I'm not a supporter of Huckabee, but if the World had listened to him then, we would only be reading about AIDs in history books!
aids is the first disease with civil rights attached to it.
Your statements resonant of the science of disease containment. I can’t believe how some people have bought the notion that quarantine of a lethal infectious disease that has killed and infected millions in this country is not a sound principle. More than 85% of AIDS has been in the homosexual group.
Secondary cases are completely tied to primary -- behavior related -- transmissions. The innocent are saved if the guilty change their behaviors. The power is all in their hands.
Yes, AIDS is as controllable today as it was when there were fewer cases. The power is in the hands of people who live risky lifestyles. Unfortunately it is the rest of us who end up paying the price.
Flu can kill too—and is far more communicable than AIDS. If we adopted his philosophy, why wouldn’t we have to quarantine you everytime you had the flu until a doctor certifies that you are no longer contagious?
I’ve found that it’s far easier and cheaper to refrain from sticking my thingymabob in them.
You know, you're right. Good point.
Drudge has this as his Big Red Headline. I guess it’s supposed to shock everybody by how horrible that would have been.
It doesn’t work on me. The world lost so many wonderful people who would have been alive today had we treated AIDS like any other communicable epidemic. I’d like to be listening to Freddy Mercury’s new songs, etc. I agree with the Huckster on this one.
Now. But imagine if it had occurred at the start before we knew too much about the way HIV works. It would have saved so many lives.
Tell that to the millions who were infected after we knew we had a communicable disease on our hands, many of which have died.
Most Freepers would agree with with Huck’s views here, especially circa ‘92. What this story indicates is that his grace period with the MSM is over. I think they are starting to feel guilty for giving a non-pc social conservativs such good reviews charm wise. This is supposed to scare Dems into action and soften him up for the general.
Earlier this week El Rushbo stated that the lamestream media was trying to build Huckabee up only to tear him down because they loathe his religious principles. Once the polling data showed they had succeeded in boosting his ratings the attacks would begin.
Rush is right again.
Yeah. I don’t know if I am right or not, but I thought quarantines were used for other types of diseases. We never had quarantines for other sexually transmitted diseases, at least not that I know about.
I just thought of the perfect triangulation for Huck: “I really only wanted to quarrantine illegals with AIDS” Adam & Steve have nothing to worry about and the immigration purists would approve. Ha.
The trashing has started. Leftists who don’t have a live have dug into records and found something to hang Huckabee on. They will never tell you that aids patients in Cuba are locked away!
Uh, Rush got that idea from me and many other freepers. We’ve been saying that for weeks. I’ve been saying that about Rudy since he announced. The official word for MSM destruction is called ‘Deaned’.
If he said to quarantine in 1984, I could understand since we really didn’t know much about AIDS then. But 1992? Come on.
I guess I was confusing airborne diseases with communicable diseases. Communicable disease includes anything contageous by a variety of means.
As of mid-1991, 38% of Americans still thought that you could get AIDS from kissing, and 29% were worried that they would get AIDS during their lifetimes. 35% said they would change their behavior by “taking more care to avoid homosexual people or those you think are homosexual or places where homosexuals meet.” 43%, FOURTY-THREE PERCENT, thought in 1989 that civil liberties should be suspended in the war on AIDS.
Of course, 89% of people thought that kids with AIDS should be allowed to attend school with other kids, and only 10% supported a quarantine, so huh, maybe Huckabee was legitimately extreme about all this.

Well, you FINALLY found an area where I agree with Huckabee. Too little/too late, but...
I’m not entirely comfortable with the idea of a quaranteen. On the other hand, I am not entirely comfortable with the public being exposed to the momentary whims of those who are infected. Then there’s the problem with transmission. From what I’ve read, I get the impression that in around five percent of the cases, those who contracted the disease have no idea how they got it. They didn’t have unsafe sex. They weren’t in a group known to have an increased risk. They were just normal people who came down with the disease.
In the early days this disease was so politicised that an AIDS diagnosis was not allowed to be placed in medical charts. Hospital and medical field personel were exposed to these people unawares. Surgeons, nurses, hematologists would be working in their fields blindly.
Our government was so lax that it didn’t even have the gutts to close bath houses with a heavily weighted homosexual clientelle where sexual activity was taking place. Multiple partners was a normal aspect of this activity.
And, there are members here that think the MSM is giving Huckabee a free pass? The media is digging up everything it can about him.
Thanks for your response. You may to look at this post of mine.

I understand where you’re coming from. I appreciate the link and additional comments.
Yes, I believe he was very extreme about it. To put a public face to it, Magic Johnson announced he had HIV in 1991. It once again raised awareness of the disease. So for Huck to say this a year later was just stupid and ill-informed.
This is still true. Good for him for having the courage to say it.
Is there any disease that Huckabee doesn't believe the government should be in the business of curing?
Mike Huckabee once advocated isolating AIDS patients from the general public, opposed increased federal funding in the search for a cure and said homosexuality could ``pose a dangerous public health risk.''Someone really wants him to get elected.
I agree with Huckabee on all three statements...it’s the elephant in the room. A lot of folks are thinking the same thing but no one has been willing to say so.
I may have to pick him as my frontrunner rather than Hunter!
