Larry O'Donnell's Anti-Mormon Rant: 'Demented, Racist, Pro- Slavery, Crazy, Ridiculous'
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 12/08/2007 8:16:37 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

Lawrence O'Donnnell, already famous for his in-your-face rant at John O'Neill of the Swiftboat Veterans, is at it again. This time, O'Donnell's target is Mitt Romney, and in particular his Mormon religion. Appearing on last night's McLaughlin group, O'Donnell indulged in an angry, protracted condemnation of Mormonism.

Excerpts:

* This was the worst political speech of my lifetime. Because this man stood there and said to you and said "this is the faith of my fathers." And you, and none of the commentators who liked this speech realize that the faith of his fathers is a racist faith. As of 1978 it was an officially racist faith, and for political political convenience in 1978 it switched. And it said "OK, black people can be in this church." He believes if he believe the faith of his fathers, that black people are black because in heaven they turned away from God, in this demented, Scientology-like notion of what was going on in heaven before the creation of the earth.

Ah, I remember his profound statement to John O'Neill of the Swiftboats......

"LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR
LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR
LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR
LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR"

Did I foreget anything?

As the article points out, early Mormons did not own slaves, and were even, not entirely accurately, accused by their Missouri neighbors of being Black Abolitionists.

Affirmative Action is racist, yet its backed by Democrats.

The Republican party was founded on the abolition of slavery, the Democrats dissented.

the evils of O’Donnell’s religion are the ones we have to beware of....and they’re getting worse.

Why is this insane lunatic treated anywhere seriously? This is the SAME clown after the 2004 Elections went around seriously arguing the Blue States “should succeed from the Red states”.

This clown is a demented loser. Any show that assigns him credibility should be laughed off the air.

His religion is based on the work of a lying, fraudulent, criminal named Mohammad who was a racist, who was pro-slavery, whose religion was completely pro-slavery. He was given an opportunity to distance himself from the evils of his religion, and he didn’t.

Mohammad was a slavery champion, the inventor of this ridiculous religion

There was a thread here yesterday that described Mormons as cult followers, and Mitt as some kind of crazy, evil cultist.

It got pulled. But those very sentiments can be found even here on FR.

My fathers family were early Mormons from Upstate NY, politically they were closer to the Whigs. According to my grandfather they did not approve of slavery and those that did not go West fought for the North in the War between the States.

There’s a strain of O’Donnellism that pops up in a lot of Romney threads here on FR. That’s sad.

I’m not a supporter of the Mormon religion, but I do agree with most of the values that they hold.

I’d never select a Mormon, a Catholic or a practicing Jew for my pastor (I’m a Protestant), but I vote for one who is right on the issues for any elected office, including POTUS.

I can’t say the same for a committed Muslim since some of the tenants or their religion fly in the face my life value system.

I would like to see him replacing “Mormonism” with “Islam”, but it won’t happen.

He might be minus a head after that. Of course, that wouldn’t be much of a loss.

The official Mormon position around 1850, according to a statement from Brigham Young I ran across, was not far from that of Abe Lincoln. A slave-owner who wanted to become a Mormon could not keep his slaves, but the Church had no objection to his selling rather than freeing them.

Something often missed in the North vs. South slavery debates is that when northern states “abolished slavery” most of the slaves in those states weren’t freed. They were just sold South before the abolition went into effect.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Refute his claim instead of attacking the messenger.

Has Lawrence every criticize Islam in this fashion? Probably not, because Lawrence is a coward and fears Muslims.

“early Mormons did not own slaves...”

Ummm, yes. And it was illegal in both New York state, Missouri, Illinois and the Utah territory at the time of Smith et al. to own slaves. Saying the religion was, until 1978, essentially racist says nothing about slavery. A typical person in 1830 was very racist by today’s standards—and since that era was the root of Mormonism—so was that faith.

There were (and are) plenty of racist non-slave owners...

Young was from White River Junction, Vermont, if I remember correctly, hardly a bastion of slave holders.

Most of the early Mormons had very little money, so I would be very surprised that many owned slaves, which was legal and represented a substantial investment.

The interesting part is that you couldn't own slaves and be a Church member, not common among churches at the time.
