Local log business looked at as model for state

Pine beetle kill trees have new purpose.

Playing with Lincoln Logs as a child meant getting to be an architect constructing dream homes.

Now, in Summit County, that toy is the inspiration for making those homes a reality while putting the lodgepole pine beetle kill trees to use.

Using a log lathe machine, the bark is removed (which kills the pine beetle), smoothed and a notch is put in it similar to they way Lincoln Logs look so the logs will seamlessly fit together.

And as this business has come together, it has gained state attention. Recently, a representative from the Colorado Office and Economic Development and International Trade as well as one from the Canadian Consulate ...

The Lodgepole Recycle Model is for one person, one machine and one log cabin, Therese said. It would take about a week to finish a smaller shed-type cabin, she added.

the infected pine beetle trees needed to come down, and they didn’t want them to go to waste.

So, when they heard about a log lathe machine from Finland, they put in an order for two. That was a couple years ago.

Since then, they’ve sold those two and upgraded to a more efficient machine that can handle larger logs...

Lodgepole makes for a pretty cabin, but needs lots and lots of maintenance... I guess it’s better than just letting the trees become a bigger fire hazard or just rotting away...

The nearest lumber yard is Montrose and Kremmling is starting to produce wood pellets for fireplaces.

This might be a way to motivate folks for a ‘healthy forest.’

Highly compressed softwood pellets are great - better to use it, than lose it.

I heat my whole house with them from Dec 1 to about Mar 1

It is surprising that the eco-wackos will allow any tree, dead or alive, to be harvested and converted to capitalistic, economically useful purposes. Were these trees taken from public or private forests?

Not sure of the source.

Most foresters in the USFS want to help.

There’s a mill on Highway 9 about 15 miles north of Silverthorne. Also one on the south edge of Meeker and one just north of Craig. I can’t say if any are currently active. The USFS made it too hard to log the White River NF that supported the Meeker operation. That, and the owner was a cranky sob that nobody liked to deal with anyway. The Craig mill I believe was once active in the Routt NF; they had a lifetime contract to supply cribs for underground mines but couldn’t maintain a reasonable tolerance and lost their sugar daddy.

The hardwood pellets throw out much more heat and are the same price. We’re using Walmart hardwood (U.S. made) at $224 per ton, Tractor Supply was $239 for “sawdust pellets” which turned out to be from Canada and were made from Pine sawdust. Not much heat from them. Hopefully this winter will be nice to us upstate NYers!

“Do you have any chimney issues?”

We’ve heated our house for 7 years with a pellet stove and have not had one chimney problem.

I have a friend locally who lives in a log house. He has lots of trouble getting homeowners insurance because of the difficulty in repairing a fire damaged log house.

check your rated BTU per ton, then the ash weight - you’ll be surprised

Likely true, but they are as much restrained by Clinton-appointed judges as everyone else.

And Sierra Club lawyers...

For this to happen in Summit county is interesting. Summit County was 91.5% for Jon Cary in 2004.
