Every thief has a hallmark, and a Brooklyn letter carrier is the Greeting Card Bandit.
The feds arrested Michael Olivio this week after an elaborate sting operation to identify the Grinch-like mailman in Bath Beach who intercepted hundreds of greeting cards for the cash inside, the Daily News has learned.
After receiving complaints from residents in the 11214 area code, the bait was set. Special Agent Stephen Dolloff mailed "test greeting card letters" to the postal customers who had complained. One customer reported she did not receive the decoy.
"Michael Olivio was the letter carrier for that customer's address on the intended day of delivery," said Dolloff, of the U.S. Postal Service's Office of Inspector General, in an affidavit filed in Brooklyn Federal Court.
Investigators then put another decoy greeting card in the mail, containing cash and an electronic transmitter. It was addressed to a bogus house address on Bay 43rd St. on Olivio's route.
Olivio, a letter carrier for five years, was under surveillance on Wednesday when he placed the letter in his satchel at the Bath Beach post office.
When he returned to the post office at 2:45p.m., the electronic transmitter indicated the letter was in Olivio's car, which he used to deliver mail on his route.
Olivio, 37, drove off and was stopped a short distance away. The agents told him they wanted the mail returned.
"It's in the glove compartment," Olivio replied, according to the court complaint.
The agents recovered the letter containing the transmitter in addition to 38 unopened greeting card letters. Inside the auto trunk were two bags containing about 100 greeting card letters in which the envelopes were torn open.
Another resident, Lucy DeRosa, 73, said she filed a complaint after Christmas cards containing checks - which were never cashed - she sent her two granddaughters never reached their destination.
When told Olivio, her mail carrier, has been accused, DeRosa said she had planned to give him a Christmas gift. "But this bum? Forget about it," she said.
Olivio admitted he had been stealing greeting cards since around Valentine's Day and accelerated the thefts around holidays. It's not clear how much money he pocketed.
A financial affidavit completed by Olivio indicates he is single and pays $542 a month in child support for an 11-year-old son. He was released on his own recognizance.
Neighbors said he had moved away about two weeks ago.
Reached by phone, Olivio said, "I'm not allowed to talk." Defense lawyer Michelle Gelernt declined to comment.
Bum is too nice of a word for this rat bastard....
Newman!
Sickening, put IT under the jail!
That’s why sending gift cards in the mail worries me. I sent some this week, but insured them.

Olivio, now known as “O-lift-e-o”.
Uh oh, he’s going to be in real trouble for smoking. He’s in the deep doo doo now.
Yeah. A lot of hate towards smokers.
Some people are just plain worthless.
LOL!
Olivio's a jerk and gives mailmen a bad name; just like Newman does.
A few years ago I had the coolest mailman. He listened to Rush while walking and delivering mail. When I stopped to talk to him I would hear it on his headphones.
That Christmas I was going to give him a Chunky bar and some jambalaya but I gave him a pair of wool socks and movie certificates instead.
He was a cool cat.
Oh, Mama!
I couldn’t do that. Could you do that? Why can they do it? Who are those guys?
So, how does one collect on the insurance if the cards/money do not reach their destination?
How do you get those large still shots/pics from the exact episode and scene?
“He was a cool cat.”

Kitty Wigs!
“How does one collect the insurance?”
I don’t know! I have the receipt for the insured mailing. If my intended recipient doesn’t actually receive it, I guess I take my receipt down to the post office and tell them.
Hopefully I won’t have to do that. . .
