Libby to Drop Appeal in CIA Leak Case
AP via SFGate ^ | 12/10/7 | MATT APUZZO, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON, (AP) -- Former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby is dropping his appeal in the CIA leak case, his attorney said Monday.

Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, was convicted of perjury and obstruction for lying about his conversations with reporters about outed CIA operative Valerie Plame.

"We remain firmly convinced of Mr. Libby's innocence," attorney Theodore Wells said. "However, the realities were, that after five years of government service by Mr. Libby and several years of defending against this case, the burden on Mr. Libby and his young family of continuing to pursue his complete vindication are too great to ask them to bear."

President Bush commuted Libby's 30-month jail sentence in July. Libby paid a $250,000 fine and must serve two years' probation. Libby remains a convicted felon, but Bush could issue a full pardon as his administration winds down.

Wells said he has not discussed a possible pardon with the president and does not know what Bush will do.

Libby was the only person charged in the investigation into the leak of Plame's identity. Nobody was charged with the leak itself, which Plame alleges was politically motivated. Her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, was a vocal critic of the Bush administration's war policy.

Libby made one fatal mistake. He believed you could ‘talk’ to the Washington Press corps.

You can’t, if your a Republican.

I googled and didn’t find any confirmation of this claim from SFGate. (Of course, I haven’t read the thread yet, so maybe someone else has.)

You are literally correct, but can’t I plead the 5th on the basis that my words could be lies and therefore subject me to perjury?

No money for justice. Sad. This entire matter was/is a farce. The Wilson’s and Fitz should be in prison.

Okay, it says "via SFGate" at the top of the article. But if it is truly an AP story, it's strange I didn't find any verification when I googled. (And it doesn't seem anyone else on the thread has found a verifying story as yet either.)

I assume he has been assured he will get a full pardon when Bush leaves office.

You probably would have gotten better results if you had performed a news search on “Libby”, and then sorted by date. That technique pretty works well for me when I hear a story on the radio and need a print confirmation.

The Clintonistas are worse than the mafia/criminals that are in prison today

Not trying to compare the two cases at all. But Libby was found guilty of perjury and obstruction. It really doesn't matter what your political party or previous character is -- you can't lie to a grand jury without consequences.
