Stop Getting Mad, America. Get Smart.
Washington Post ^ | December 9, 2007 | Richard L. Armitage and Joseph S. Nye Jr.

Posted on 12/10/2007 5:13:15 PM PST by america4vr

The world is dissatisfied with American leadership. Shocked and frightened after 9/11, we put forward an angry face to the globe, not one that reflected the more traditional American values of hope and optimism, tolerance and opportunity.

This fearful approach has hurt the United States' ability to bring allies to its cause, but it is not too late to change. The nation should embrace a smarter strategy that blends our "hard" and "soft" power -- our ability to attract and persuade, as well as our ability to use economic and military might. Whether it is ending the crisis in Pakistan, winning the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, deterring Iran's and North Korea's nuclear ambitions, managing China's rise or improving the lives of those left behind by globalization, the United States needs a broader, more balanced approach.

Lest anyone think that this approach is weak or naive, remember that Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates used a major speech on Nov. 26 "to make the case for strengthening our capacity to use 'soft' power and for better integrating it with 'hard' power." We -- one Republican, one Democrat -- have devoted our lives to promoting American preeminence as a force for good in the world. But the United States cannot stay on top without strong and willing allies and partners. Over the past six years, too many people have confused sharing the burden with relinquishing power. In fact, when we let others help, we are extending U.S. influence, not diminishing it.

Since 9/11, the war on terrorism has shaped this isolating outlook, becoming the central focus of U.S. engagement with the world. The threat from terrorists with global reach is likely to be with us for decades.

Plame’s identity was as classified as the sanitation engineer’s. She drove through the front gate everyday. This was a setup from the first. The President’s mistake is that he didn’t hammer traitors in a time of war

Yes, about 20 years ago I figured out that the WaPo and the rest of the MSM was a cabal of agenda driven people who didn’t hesitate to omit material facts, distort other facts, be selective with who they quoted and how they edited the quotes. Boy, they were slick as an enema while doing it.

Thank God for the internet, the liberty and the forums to share information the gatekeepers kept from us for so many years.

I knew Armitage was a dove, but I didn't realize he was a pink dove.

How about these "traditional American values", Dick?

Well Dick, you did a really crappy job with the ‘soft’ stuff when you and Powell were running State so Bush had to use more of the ‘hard’ stuff.

So you managed to pay him back for your incompetence by sabotaging his administration in the plame affair by letting all of the WH aides twist in the wind and allowing the MSM to tear apart the Administration.

So, Dick? You’ve done enough damage. Why don’t you just shut the F up?

Uh...right, so after terrorists just blew up our buildings and killed 3000 of our citizens we should just put on a happy smiley face and say "Oh well, that's just what they do, let's tolerate it, every culture's equal, why can't we all get along"?? Please! Give me a break.

"...we put forward an angry face to the globe..."

Right now, I am upset, and pretty damned angry. I just finished watching the movie "Flight 93" with my wife. Then I logged on and read THIS crap. We put an angry face to the world? WTF is that supposed to mean? SHOULD WE HAVE PUT AN EFFING HAPPY FACE TOWARDS THE WORLD?

On 9/11 we had 3,000 of our fellow citizens slaughtered in cold blood. Mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, grandparents, pregnant women, brothers, sisters, friends, co-workers, Americans. Some of them were pulverized to a fine mush under the weight of collapsing buildings. Some faced the choice of burning alive or plummeting a thousand feet to die on the pavement below. Others died screaming in terror as the planes flew past skyscrapers before hitting their targets.

I had an acquaintance of mine who died on one of those planes, American Flight 11. His name was David Kovalcin. My last memory of him is sitting up on a porch until 2 AM on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee drinking beers talking about life long after all the other people had gone to bed.

My new boss was a Colonel in the Army who had just retired weeks before. I was having my first interview with her in her office, when her phone rang. It was one of her former subordinates calling to tell her that a plane had just hit the Pentagon. After she hung up, she looked at me and said "I have a lot of close friends in that building."

If those people who perpetrated the horror of 9/11 had weapons that could kill a million people, they would have used them. They intentionally rammed those planes into the WTC to try to trap as many people in the top of the buildings as they could. If they could get their hands on a nuclear weapon, they would use it without hesitation. People like this POS who wrote this, and the liberal rump-swabs who believe with all their hearts what this guy wrote are the biggest danger to Western civilization that there is.

There is no enemy out there right now that is more dangerous than liberalism.

This is by far the most nauseatingly, pompous moon-batty puke-fest I have ever been subjected to, EVER.

What do you expect from the WaPo and Richard Armitage who "leaked" Plame's name and stood by while everyone else was blamed. Armitage should hide under the lowest rock he can find - he has the integrity of the other slimey creatures who hide under rocks!

I detest Armitage, and I dislike Novak just as much.

I gave money to Scooter Libby’s defense fund, which he should never have needed because of the actions of the arrogant testicle-less weasels Armitage and Novak.

They let an innocent man’s life get ruined, for WHAT? It just pisses me off.

Very well said.
Yeah. Look, we'll just forget all that happened on 9/11. Not to mention that our republic was very literally nearly decapitated. (Bless those on Flight 93. Without their bravery the nation's very existence stood in the balance).

All we want is for you to like us. Please! Like Us! Please like us!

Don’t get yourself too upset. I don’t know if anyone in DC is totally “innocent”.

You do know that Scooter Libby defended Marc Rich, don’t you?

I totally understand your rage. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.These are precisely the sentiments I experienced.

So nauseated was I, I couldn't quote/rip apart any of the damnable lies with which he managed to
defile me like some horrific, noxious cloud of flatulent moon-battiness.

Nothing personal khnyny, nothing against you for pointing it out, but I honestly don’t really care if he defended Marc Rich. That has nothing to do with what happened to him in this.

I am not really interested in karma or anything like that. What I am concerned with is that our tax dollars were spent on a partisan witch hunt, our focus on the war on terror was lost and the fight was made more difficult because the liberal suck-bags out there thought they were going to be able to frog-march someone of substance out of the White House, when the partisan hacks running the investigation knew ALL ALONG that it was Armitage.

Scooter Libby could defend Jeffrey Dahmer for all I care. This thread is about a nuclear Iran and Islamofascists with their hands on a bomb, and the idiots who think that is a fine and dandy idea.

That is what I have an issue with.
